Could you please send me a link as well? I own every SW blu-ray but have no disk drives other than an xbox and can’t attempt a rip myself, and am finding downloading to be significantly more confusing than I anticipated.

You give in and, and they come out of the wood works. No one is willing to search themselves. And yes, there are definitely easy ways to obtain the entire OT in this format by a simple DuckDuckGo search.

I have searched and all the links I have found are dead. I get that we want to avoid hit-n runners. I’m not one of them.

There are still alternatives…

solkap’s NJVC Custom Blu-ray Set of Harmy’s Despecialized Editions now available on Mega superb thread is still an option.

The Despecialized Editions are still available on various public and private torrent sites - in many file formats and file sizes to suit.

As well as what Jaxer said re DuckDuckGo, apparently.

Plus, some fellow members have been, on occasion, helping out those who have made an effort to join in with - and be a part of - the community on here, too.

Hello,

Would anyone happen to know the answer to these questions?
(re: English 5.1/Stereo Audio tracks on SW v2.7)

First, I don’t find any audio track notes past SW v2.5. In v2.5 notes I find:
• TRACK 1) 5.1 1977 70mm six track mix @ 640Kbps
• TRACK 2) 2.0 1977 35mm stereo mix @ 224Kbps

I am converting with Subler for Mac > mkv to m4a
During conversion, I am removing all tracks, except two:
• Home theater (5.1)
• Stereo devices (2.0) (iPhone, iPad, etc that can’t read the 5.1 track)

My questions are:

  1. Are the specs for v2.7 the same as v2.5?
  2. For the stereo track, would it be better to downmix the 5.1 track (@ 640Kbps) to 2.0? Or just use the 2.0 (@ 224Kbps)?

But really, the Kbps numbers are just one factor. What is the origin of each of these tracks?
I do not know the differences between either track. Did the 35mm release have a different mix than the 70mm release (sound effects, music mix, etc). If so, what are the differences?

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Jas

  1. Yes, the specs are the same.
  2. No, don’t downmix the 5.1, use the 2.0 track - the 5.1 is a specifically constructed upmix of multiple 2.0 and 5.1 tracks to recreate the 1977 70mm six-track mix as closely as possible and is not suitable for 2.0-channel downmixing. The 2.0 tracks are all authentic, direct-from-laserdisc stereo tracks.

Hi ChainsawAsh!

A few questions:

Where can I read about the audio-specific things you mention? I haven’t been able to find these detailed track notes.

Someone advised the same and mentioned this, “…stick with the one that is already 2.0. It is already the matrixed Dolby Stereo that can be decoded into 4.0 tracks by any pro-logic decoder.”
Can you confirm this?

Do you have any feelings about the mono mix? I had not originally thought to include that in the final squished file, but someone mentioned that it was unique. I do know it was designed to recreate the original 1977 theater experience. (I saw it in 1977 at the Chinese Theater on Hollywood Blvd!) Other than that fact, is there any other reason I might consider keeping it? Typically I would go for only 5.1 and 2.0. In what situation would it be used? 5.1 system? 2.0 devices?

Excellent info!

Thank you!

Here’s a good thread on the various audio mixes:

https://originaltrilogy.com/topic/Star-Wars-sound-mixes/id/15294

The mono mix was the last one prepared and has quite a few different sound effects, new lines of dialogue (the tractor beam line extension and “close the blast doors” which were put back in in 1997), alternate dialogue takes (all of Beru’s dialogue), etc. I like it for the differences (“Blast it, Biggs” sounds weird to me now), but the quality isn’t as good, obviously. It was restored from a videotaped recording (or two?) of a TV broadcast that used the mix; it’s never been officially released on home video.

Here’s hairy_hen’s thread about his 5.1 recreation of the 70mm Dolby Six-Track mix (which is the 5.1 mix included on 4K77 and Despecialized):

Also, most theatres in 1977 showed the film with the mono mix, so while all three can fairly be said to be the original theatrical mixes, probability is on the side of the mono mix being the one any given person actually heard. The stereo and six-channel mixes are so similar, that, if pressed for space, I’d be tempted to jettison the stereo, except that the stereo mix may work better than downmixing the six-channel for people using stereo-only setups. Pick your poison.

Hairy_hen has very consistently said not to use his 5.1 track if you don’t have a 5.1 setup, for what it’s worth. I don’t think it sounds bad on my soundbar or TV speakers, but he’s always been pretty adamant that it’s not designed to downmix well, especially since it’s already a modified upmix.

Yeah, I honestly listen to it downmixed all the time with no issues. But he’s proud of what he created and wants it shown in the best possible light. I’m sure there are minor phase issues on a stereo mixdown that some careful listener with high-end headphones and a critical ear may pick up, and he doesn’t want the blame for that falling on him, and I understand.

Kinda the way I’m always telling everyone to use Project Threepio’s SUP files and everyone just uses the SRT files and I just privately cringe. It’s the difference between as good as the creator intended and good enough for most purposes.

Woah, Ok, I need educating.
What’s the difference in SUP & SRT files? Do I use the SUP the same way as SRT?

SRT is just text and timings. It includes no other information - font, color, drop shadow, size, etc. are all determined by the player you’re using.

SUP is the Blu-Ray subtitle format if I remember correctly. It’s not text - it’s images. So the font, size, position, drop shadows, color, etc. is all embedded in the subtitle file itself and can’t be changed (except maybe size and/or position) by your player.

Otherwise, yeah, they should both be used in the same way. If you’re authoring a Blu-Ray with subtitles, definitely use the SUPs since the SRT files will have to be converted by the software to SUP anyway.

^^ what he said. SRT is text and timestamps, SUP is images and timestamps, essentially.

To be honest, SRT is probably truly fine for almost everyone. But, especially with other languages, having your player so much as select the wrong subtitling font can be a very serious problem. For non-English subtitles, the player-positioned SRT subs might overlap the Greedo subs, and so on. SUP subtitles look how I designed them to look (they look exactly like the screencaps in Project Threepio’s first post). But SRT may be close enough for a lot less effort, so I can’t blame people for using them (who knows what they look like, but they’re the right words at the right times, so there you go).

And also, I’m the first to admit my “matching” subs are a total gimmick, but that whole concept is pretty much impossible with SRT.

Bluto’s comprehensive and quality ’Guide to Downloading Projects from Usenet’ thread, in the How-To’s and Technical Discussions section of the site, may also be of interest for those members looking to acquire Harmy’s Despecialized Editions - or TN1’s 4K OT Preservation Projects.

solkap’s ’NJVC Custom Blu-ray Set of Harmy’s Despecialized Editions now available on Mega’ thread - with helpful and concise step-by-step guide - is a great option on how to acquire this particular Set.

I thought the above is also worth mentioning in here to help people find another method of obtaining projects on here.

Those are truly superb guides Bluto and solkap! Well done and thank you both 😃
