Some info & help for Harmy’s Despecialized Editions of the Original Trilogy…

Hi, and welcome to the site 😃

Firstly, the About and Help sections may be of interest to you regarding this site and what the OriginalTrilogy•com is about.

Please have a look around the site to see if there is anything else of interest too - there are a fair few varied and quality Star Wars fan edits, preservations, and fan projects on here. Or join in on one of the many Star Wars discussions going on around the site, or discussions on life in general in the Off Topic sections as well…

👍

These two threads contain a lot of useful info on Harmy’s Despecialized Editions:-

NJVC Custom Bluray Set of Harmy’s Despecialized Editions now available on Mega - by the generous and ever-helpful Solkap

&

Star Wars Despecialized Editions - Custom Bluray Set - by the talented and gracious NJVC

There are also these three main Despecialized Edition threads, by Harmy himself - where information is in abundance, the history and process of the project is contained, and many questions have been already answered - with more encouraged to be asked:-

Star Wars - by Harmy

Empire Strikes Back - by Harmy

Return Of The Jedi - by Harmy

^ The ‘The Ultimate Introductory Guide’ in the 1st post of the Star Wars thread linked above… will likely be particularly helpful. All credit to HanDuet for making a great, easy-to-follow and useful guide.

Harmy also has some useful and informative social media channels, here - Facebook : Youtube : Twitter

In fact, Harmy made a video not long ago, that is worth watching for anyone interested in his Despecialized Editions - or for Fan Edits and Preservation Projects in general:-

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrwKZHv4OS0

(Be sure to check out his other great videos too 😃)

Obviously, the main rule of acquiring the Despecialized Editions is that you must own the official retail release of the Original Trilogy on blu ray - or the HD Digital Download of the OT.

For more info see the ‘The Ultimate Introductory Guide’ mentioned above - and also the OT•com Rules on this…

Fan Edit / Preservation Forum Rules and FAQ can be found here - link

Of course, it’s up to you which format you’d like to have the Depsecialized Edits stored on - many people like them on blu ray discs - some in quality Box Sets and cases or covers with quality artwork, a few have them stored on USB flash drives, or their computer hard drive, some have them on standalone HD Players, or plex / kodi / media centre type set-ups…

PS - A few more Harmy-related threads for his projects:-

The ‘Case Covers, Disc Labels, and Fan Art’ section of the OriginalTrilogy•com site has an array of cover and disc art for Harmy’s Despecialized Editions - well worth checking it out for ideas & inspiration, for printing info, and help too.

The ‘How-To’s and Technical Discussions’ may also be of use/assistance if you’re having any technical issues - for seeing if others are having / have had the same or similar problem, or for posing a new question.

Good luck with it - and hope you enjoy watching them, and any of the other great projects on the site too.

👍

Hi and welcome Gujag,

There are many Star Wars preservation projects - including the theatrical releases of the Original Trilogy - in the Star Wars Preservation section of the site.

The ‘Harmy DeSpecialized Editions’ and also the ‘4K77’ and ‘4K83’ releases (4K80 is being worked on - though may take a year or so to be finished) may be of particular interest to you.

Though please take the time to look around and find which project(s) appeals to you.

Also on site are a fair few intriguing Star Wars fan edits knocking around the site - as well as preservation projects and fan edits unrelated to Star Wars.

Good luck with it mate.

First rule of this site, no buying or selling of fan created material, second there are better and easier ways to get the DEED, which is for you to go to the NJVC thread and inquire within.

Hi , thanks a lot for your answer .
where can i find the NJVC thread ?

thanks

That’s not how this works. One cannot buy or sell fan edits or restorations. Just use the guides and ask the user Solkap for help.

Hi Noah,

This thread may be of some assistance and interest mate:-

and solkap (along with a few others) also very kindly and generously give a lot of time and effort to answer many people’s questions - and any difficulties in obtaining the Depsecialized Editions from him, in his thread, here:-

Thank you. I’ll try it and see what will happen. I tried to obtain the trilogy last year, and I ended up accidentally erasing all of my edits just to get the despecialized trilogy.

where did the OP ever ask to buy or sell the edits ? He just asked for someone who might have them to share them with him . I asked user Movealong for a copy of his Story Of Star Wars and Empire Lp edits years ago and he sent me them in the mail free of charge . Great edits btw , I wonder what ever happened to Movealong . There have been other users who have offered to share edits with me as well . I myself have sought out and seen the instructions for despecialized and I also think they are a bit convoluted . I honor the policy here about not buying or selling the edits , so have not tried to buy them from some of the shady people out there trying to profit from others work . Maybe if they WERE a little easier to obtain for the less technically inclined , it might help to curtail that sort of thing .I would be thankful if someone here were to share their copies of Despecialized with me .

He wasn’t asking to buy anything, he was asking for someone to PM him a direct link since he can’t get the guides to work.

But OP, I’d say give the Ultimate Introductory Guide a go one more time, and if you’re having issues with it, post about the problems you’re experiencing in Harmy’s thread - someone will be able to help you out.

Assuming you haven’t already gotten a direct link PM. But in the absence of any real info about exactly what problems you’ve run into, you might not get any for fear that someone’s sending you a link you’ve already used unsuccessfully.

My apologies.

That’s alright. I know that’s illegal to sell fan edits for money. I would never do that with my edits or anyone else’s.

^ I think the matter is probably just a combination of your below comment and LordZerome1080 taking it rather literally 😉

Other than the cost of materials, it should be free. It’s a fan made restoration and as such should never be sold or bought for profit.

What you’ll be looking at is a Blu-Ray burner, which can be had for around $100 for an external USB one, or around $50-60 for an internal one that goes in your PC case’s disc drive bay.

Then you’ll need blank Blu-Ray media to write the files to a disc. I recommend Verbatim brand, price depends on if you go for a large spindle of discs, if you go for printable (plain white surface) discs or not, and if you go single layer (25GB) or dual layer (50GB).

Finally, you’re going to need the files themselves! If you’re burning to disc, I recommend NJVC’s set, which has both single- and dual-layer options, complete with menus and such. There’s a thread with details about it in this very forum.

For burning to the disc, the free software imgburn will be all you’ll need to get the downloaded file burned to your blank disc.

And that’s it!

Now, alternatively, you can just download the MKV video file versions, put them on a flash drive, and plug the flash drive into your Blu-Ray player (or possibly even just your TV), which should have no trouble playing the standalone files.

The last option is to get the ~8GB AVCHD versions, which can be burned to a DVD+R DL (dual layer DVD) with a standard DVD burner. This still results in an HD disc that can only be played on BR players, but it isn’t universally compatible and the quality is ever so slightly reduced compared to the full size MKV releases.

Hope that helps! Feel free to ask any questions either here or in a private message if you’re confused or have any issues with any part of the process.

Just adding a little to what Chainsaw Ash put so well above - probably worth asking a friend, neighbour or family if you can use their computer or equipment to burn some blu ray discs if money is an issue. Also may be try the local internet cafe etc too.

Good luck with it 😃

PS - glad you didn’t go with buying the Despecialized Editions from one of the dark side scumbags out there…

Harmy made a youtube video to remind everyone that Fan Edits must never be bought or sold:-

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrwKZHv4OS0

As posted elsewhere on the site…

The people who sell these freely available projects do so on the backs of the Fan Editors’ long, arduous & hard work - all given for free. The same applies to those who designed the cover and disc art, and also the people who put together any extras such as interactive menus or bonus / additional content made for these projects as well.

Many of these sellers make considerable money from selling these Fan Edits - despite often claiming that they are only charging ‘for their time and to cover costs’. These claims are false - they substantially profit from their actions.

The quality of product you see in many sellers’ ‘unboxing’ or ‘promotional’ videos on youtube etc may be nowhere near the quality of what you actually receive; some people have received non-working discs, cheap quality discs, poor quality covers printed on standard letter paper, low quality ink settings used, broken disc cases, just being sent the discs themselves instead of in their protective boxes - and without disc covers and artwork too (despite some ‘review’ videos showing the contrary).

They also endanger the future of any and all future projects too. It is a golden rule of owning these freely available Edits that you must own the official retail release (or digital download) - and that no-one profits from the making & distribution of them.

Some sellers have even deleted comments on their sites from Harmy and other Fan Editors letting people know the above info - and that all these projects are freely available elsewhere…

I think it’s harder now than it used to be. I search for the torrents but seem to always end up with malware or something of the sort. Any direction would be greatly appreciated.

Number 1 piece of advice I have for that particular issue:

Never ever ever visit a torrent tracker site without an ad blocker enabled. The malware you’re talking about is almost certainly from a malicious “ad” masquerading as a download button.

Get uBlock Origin and leave it on any time you’re visiting a site that offers legally-dubious content. Because those kind of sites aren’t going to be doing much vetting of who they’re selling their ad space to as long as the checks clear.

Good suggestion, I’ve now replaced ABP with uBlock Origin on my driver and there’s a marked improvement in web browsing speed. However, on my computer that I use for visiting sites that offer “legally-dubious content”, ABP is much better at preventing pop-up windows from opening. 😃
