I don’t think it’s gonna happen. They’d surely have released news this big along with the recent cast announcement.
Lucasfilm clearly stated that this is the “final installment of the Skywalker saga”. Singular, not plural. I don’t think they’re all of a sudden going to change this into a two-film ordeal partway through development, especially after the bad rep they’ve acquired after the productions of Rogue One and Solo. They’re gonna take this as smooth as possible and strive towards making a coherent, satisfying conclusion.
Just my two cents.
They clearly state lots of things. 😉

To be honest, I love the idea of two movies. JJ is probably regretting his backing out of 8, and two movies would give him a chance to have his “trilogy”. This would ALSO give our film editors more material to make a definitive 3 movie Trilogy 😃
Merge Episodes 7,8 eliminating the Episode 7 remake of 4, and eliminate the boring stuff in episode 8. They already merge together perfectly when we meet Luke on the island. My 2 cents.

I mean, it might be best case scenario for us as a fan editing community, but I think it would lose a lot of goodwill with general audiences. It would certainly turn me off of new SW material more than anything else Disney has done up to this point.

I’ve read it, they don’t. Actually, the fact that they come so close to saying it but don’t do so outright would seem to suggest that they wanted to keep the possibility open.

I remember Mon being alive at the end (she sends Leia a message saying she suspected Vader was her father).
It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? Luke will return in the flesh, saying he’s feeling much better, but frustratingly never finishes telling anyone exactly what happened to him.

That would be a bit mind blowing. Maybe he’s confused as to why he’s materialized, even a bit upset having been to the other side. With his X-Wing having been submerged for years, I doubt he has a way off the planet, unless somebody, (the F.O.?) goes there to see if he’s really dead.
The production will have to keep things really under wraps to hide a return to Ahch-To.
