The Last Jedi: Legendary (Released) — Page 19

Hmm… yes, of course! The Last Jedi is full of latent sexuality. It’s really the key to everything! The milking scene, Rey asking Kylo for a cowl, the touching hands scene, Rey believing she can save Kylo, Holdo emasculating Poe, etc etc.

I can’t tell if I’m kidding, or if I just need some sleep. It all makes so much sense now. Except BB8’s antics.

My stance on revising fan edits.

It’s Star Wars tradition to be chock-full of weird sex stuff. Or maybe it was just us all these years.

No, just Duracell. 😉

I totally agree with you (after friendzoning Finn in TFA, Rey declines Ren’s seduction by saber-blocking him in TLJ).

(twist in Episode 9: she’s more into wookiees)

Still : I stand my point that Rey asking Ren to put a cowl goes against this latent sexuality. Her eyes looking elsewhere without saying anything in your workprint v1 bears more meaning in that matter than the theatrical cut does imho.

Personally if Rose didn’t exist I’d be happy. i don’t mind the character per say but everything she’s implemented in is badly done. The heavy handed ‘slavery is bad’ dialogue, the stupid block of Finn’s sacrifice, the love/kiss for someone she met yesterday…

“This cannot be! Is… Is it an omen?”

Hey Hal!

Just watched down the work print, and I love your style! You’re careful and subtle with the changes, so that none of the edits were distracting.

I was most impressed, of course, with the Canto Bight cutdown. Oh man, I can enjoy the movie so much more with that reduction, I think you nailed it!

One thing, though, that I just won’t be able to ever get over watching is the Leia Poppins scene. It’s just too distracting. Ultimately, I think I will want a hybrid of your edit with this scene cut.

So, inspired by the Ivan Ortega videos and my wife’s suggestion for how to eliminate that scene, I tried my hand at a proof of concept edit to see if it can be removed without being too fan-edity. This is the result: https://vimeo.com/268210930
(pw: fanedit)

Does this work at all? One thing I would like to do, with permission, is use the music change Ortega outlined here: https://youtu.be/wq57WLWAqU8?t=10m15s

I love his music transition from Hux to Leia, and that would be my ideal way to finish off the scene. What do you think?

That is probably the best way that idea can be executed. Great work!

But, I don’t have an impetus to remove the sequence. Especially since we won’t be getting any more Leia.

Fair enough! And thank you!

I think I will use your edit when finished and splice in this bit for myself. Leia Poppins just takes me right out of the movie!

Edit: btw, that YouTube video you linked to is fantastic, thanks for sharing!

What I find interesting. The two actors that are still alive, have been killed off. The one that is dead. Is still alive.

I also have my reservations about that. But I guess that what stands against Leia’s space sequence outbids what stands for:

  • it looks ridiculous
  • it doesn’t pay hommage to Carrie Fisher at all (it’s even quite insulting to fail that much what should have been her most important scene in the Saga)
  • it has absolutely no impact on the movie (Ren doesn’t shoot, what does it mean in the movie ? Well: nothing. Leia exposes to everyone her Force sensitivity, what is the payoff in the rest of the movie ? Well: nothing. This entire sequence is 100% useless, even Lucas didn’t fail that much during the PT era)

But yeah: next Leia we’ll see will probably a “Laurence Olivier/Gladiator” version of her, so I understand Hal’s feeling about keeping that scene intact, a very hard call, but in the end the edit is his. The thing is that this scene is probably going to be a real deal breaker for many people, so I hope someone will take Hal’s edit and implement into it the best space Leia’s removal possible !

MalàStrana, that’s what I want too! The scene is a deal breaker for me.

Here’s my current version (using Ivan Ortega’s music idea for the end of the scene):

But I’m wondering what others have done. I’m just looking for the best version to splice into Hal’s edit. Maybe we should make a new topic to keep this out of Hal’s thread?

Have you considered changing the name of the film like you did with the prequels? I think “Legacy of the Jedi” has a nice ring to it. Since the movie is more about continuing their legacy than it is “The Last Jedi”.

Jedit: For the love of God, please remove Space Walker Leia.

The Skywalker Saga:

This is the way.

He’s said before that the Leia scene doesn’t bother him so I think he is going to stick with that. I’m with him on that decision.

I don’t think he’s going to change the title but he’s had a theme of using book titles for his edits so I think he would stick with that. I think Dark Force Rising would fit well with TLJ too, but I don’t think it necessarily needs a new title. Legacy of the blank would make for a cool title though!

In my mind, TFA and TLJ are lower level edits that don’t radically altar the source material such that I feel the need to rename them.
The prequels are a special case. And TFA and TLJ are good titles that I really like. As I’ve described, these two edits each are more of an effort on my part to be a positive effort to help them just enough to be more easily enjoyed and participate in the continually sprawling Star Wars landscape. The prequels were that way as well, though called for more extensive work and were informed by a body of fan edit ‘textual history’ to be incorporated.

So, no, I like the titles as they are. If I had to retitle them all…

Episode I - CLOAK OF DECEPTION
Episode II - THE APPROACHING STORM
Episode III - LABYRINTH OF EVIL
Episode IV - REBEL DAWN
Episode V - SHADOWS OF THE EMPIRE
Episode VI - ???
Episode VII - THE FORCE UNLEASHED
Episode VIII - LEGACY OF THE JEDI

My stance on revising fan edits.

Hey Hal,

One thing I noticed when re-watching your Canto Bight sequence (so much better) is that there’s not a lot of setup for the shady people they’re about to see (including DJ), and the stolen weapons dealer’s ship moment is kind of random.

Now, I’m not suggesting adding back in any of the ham-fisted political commentary, but Rose has a simple line after Finn asks, “You know this town, Canto Bight?”
Rose says “From stories”, which is where you cut. This is a bit abrupt, but she also says right after that, “It’s a terrible place filled with the vilest people in the galaxy.”

I think adding that back would help setup the place, and DJ’s revelation about the weapons dealer wouldn’t come out of nowhere. It would be akin to Obi-Wan’s “wretched hive of scum and villainy” line from ANH.

It’s nothing more than a cheap fake out and stupid way to remove Leia from the story so Admiral Gender Studies can take over. It would be much more powerful if Leia took out Snoke’s ship and Luke visited her there instead.
