Ranking the Star Wars films — Page 120

Even if I didn’t like R1, at least it isn’t ugly like ROTS, so it wins by default.

ROTS is a better movie than R1 at every single level. R1 being more recent has better special effects and Edwards being a competent shooter the movie has a few well made shots. But that’s pretty much it. No story, no characters, no emotion, nothing (emptiness at its best). You’re not the first one I know to rank ROTS higher than R1 (in a few years from now people won’t really watch R1 anymore: it’s half nothing with small bits of EU and half a ROTJ remake with boring characters tha get stupid and repetitive death scenes… so really there is nothing interesting in R1 outside some “star wars porn” shots…).

and yet you spent a fair bit of time in Rogue One fan edit threads on a film that in your opinion with ‘No story, no characters, no emotion, nothing (emptiness at its best)’ and ‘in a few years from now people won’t really watch R1 anymore…’ and even contributed to…

A little patience goes a long way on this old-school Rebel base. If you are having issues finding what you are looking for, these will be of some help…

Are you saying RO is an ROTJ remake because they both have a land battle? In that case, every war movie is a remake of every a war movie.

Also, if it really is half a remake of ROTJ as you say, ROTJ would have been much better.

I can credit ROTS for at least attempting to tell a character-driven story. I can’t say the same about R1.

If R1 didn’t even attempt it, why blame it for not being character-driven? Or does every movie need to be character driven?

“At least The Phantom Menace tried to make a step-in-the-poop joke that isn’t completely tasteless, they horribly failed, but at least they tried. I can’t say the same of Citizen Kane.”

Ceci n’est pas une signature.

I just rewatched TFA for the first time since I saw it in theaters, the gentle restructure fan edit, and it’s not quite as good as I remember, but still immensely enjoyable and quite possibly still better than ROTJ for me.

Things I noticed this go-around:

  1. The humour was not my style and took me out a lot.
  2. The title theme sounded more like a parody than the theme proper.
  3. Rey being able to pilot the Falcon better than Han, and the unexplained change in the treatment of droids was odd and a little annoying.
  4. The Rathtar scene is atrocious and serves little to no purpose.

Not all of it was bad. I noticed John Williams’ score a lot more, and was able to appreciate it more. Everything with Kylo Ren was great. I enjoyed everything else about the same.

My ranking:

  1. Star Wars
  2. Empire
  3. TFA
  4. ROTJ
  5. R1
  6. Everything else.

R1 barely attempted to have characters at all. If the Death Star and other iconic Star Wars imagery weren’t in it, then nothing about the film would be even remotely memorable.

And your analogy is not worth addressing.

I kind of felt that way about Jyn and Cassian at first, but I have found them to be more interesting on subsequent viewings.

But most of the other characters are fantastic. Baze, Chirrut, K2SO, Krennic, Galen Erso…I enjoyed all of them right from the start.

I’ll never understand the complaint that Rey pilots the Falcon better than Han. I’ve seen the film at least ten times at this point yet I guess I keep missing the scene where that happens.

Come on man, it’s the scene where she keeps crashing into stuff.

I think you need to close your mind

The part where Han looks like a doof and Rey bypasses the compressor. I don’t understand how you don’t see it.

Ah, the part where Rey is more familiar with modifications her boss made years after Han lost the Falcon. Yeah, that doesn’t make any sense at all.

Not to mention the fact that Han was known for having a lot of problems getting the Falcon going in the first two films.

It’s not his fault!

I liked the Chinese monks a lot and I think that Jyn bordered on being a good character but was held back by the writing and some pretty stoic acting, which I think was probably the fault of whatever the executives were trying to enforce during the reshoots. The imperial characters, like the officer and the Death Star builder, also bordered on good but they were overshadowed by the film’s attempt to shoehorn in classic Star Wars stuff. The CGI Peter Cushing and the Vader stuff got in the way.

Look, I don’t need the condescending tone. Your point is noted, though it doesn’t seem like Rey really knew all that much about it otherwise. A minor quible and I get everyone clawing at my throat.

It’s just one of those things that’s been brought up many times, and quite recently.

It’s something I hadn’t considered or noticed until this recent rewatch, hence me mentioning it again. I didn’t want to bring up any past discussion and I’m not the same people who previously mentioned it. It just felt a bit odd, among the other things I mentioned that have no doubt also been said before.

I’ve found it wise to tread lightly on the disliking of TFA…

Lmao, I said it was better than ROTJ.
