It’s illegal and unethical to purchase the Despecialized Edition period. Harmy made the Despecialized Edition available as free downloads, and these pricks are making money off his hard work and putting the fanedit/restoration community in jeopardy doing so. Don’t put any money in their pockets.
So it is free to download the despecialized edition ??
Yes. Visit this page for information on how to get them:

However, you must own the official Blu-rays before obtaining them.

Good work Blubberboy for doing some investigation and therefore finding out you can get these completely free as they were always meant to be. Please be sure to let any friends or family know as well that you think may look to do the same as you.
Do also be aware though that all fan editors request you own a copy of the official blurays of the movies so that the copy rights holders don’t feel they are losing sales to unofficial digital copies and come down harshly on those that created them out of their love for Star Wars and were kind enough to make them available for all other Star Wars fans.

Also, never buy it. Fan projects are never to be bought or sold. See these thread for details:

You have to transcend the thread. Then you will find the locking comes from within.
You have both passed the test ZigZig & Frink 😉
Personally, as a member here, I’d encourage everyone to watch it and upvote that video.

Hi and welcome
Is it “okay” to torrent the Despecialized Editions rather than download the long way? (Granted that I own the original trilogy on DVD)
“okay” is really all about a best faith effort to actually own what you can, and in this case you should really own the Blu-ray, not the DVD, as the Despecialized Editions are largely Blu-ray source.
where you find the files is up to you, but the trouble with torrents is that they are often not the original source, they might just have audio tracks trimmed to reduce size, but sometimes they are re-encodes or downscales.
Hi and welcome to the site.
The information you seek can be found here mate:-
and dahmage is correct - you should own the blu ray or Digital Download releases to have the DeSpecialized Editions:-
‘Remember, as with any fan edit, YOU MAY ONLY DOWNLOAD THIS PROJECT IF YOU ARE A LEGAL OWNER OF THE OFFICIAL SOURCE. For Harmy’s DE project, this means YOU MUST OWN AN OFFICIAL HD RELEASE for each respective film (i.e. Star Wars Episodes IV, V, & VI), such as the official Blu-ray Disks or digital purchase.’

Hi Nordo,
This site has no connection with how people obtain the Despecialized Editions - or any other Preservation or Fan Edit etc - for that matter.
However, you may get an answer - or some help - if you were to ask your question in this thread, here:-
This section of the site is for more for reporting bugs and issues with the software of the site itself.
Good luck with it - and welcome to the site 😃

I knew next to nothing about how to obtain the Despecialized Editions and how to unwrap strange looking file extensions. But the google doc posted above is detailed and simple. t’s much easier than it looks.
In just a few steps you’ll be enjoying the closest version to the original as you can get!
So I downloaded all the files and I’m just stuck on the last step. I go to extract the .rar files and it prompts me for a password. “harmey” is not working. Any ideas?
Harmy doesn’t have an E in it. Try that.
Nope.
Hi, and welcome to the site.
Harmy’s Despecialized Editions are available in many various sizes and formats - on both public and private torrent sites.
If space on your computer is an issue… there are torrents out there on the internet for the whole trilogy that come to around 8gb in size (a fair few people have them on USB flash drives etc - instead of having them on a disc format).
Please take the time to read some of the threads on the Despecialized Editions on here for more info.
Of course, it a requirement to own the official blu ray release or digital download of Original Trilogy before acquiring Harmy’s Edits.
