Hence no Episode IIIandthreequarters.
But it is still STAR WARS universe, dammit!
Compare with STAR WARS: Rebels logo. Not an episode either, yet…
Do you honestly not see why the medium is the important distinction between the two?
What about CPYoda?
I would put this in my sig if I weren’t so lazy.

My issue with the logo shot was the music. I think they should have paired “ROGUE ONE” with a couple bars of either the main title or the Rebel fanfare. I know the idea was not to lean too heavily on the John Williams stuff, but I’ve seen too many TV parody episodes with royalty-free Star Wars-esque music. Kicking the film off with a new theme like that almost made it feel fake, if that makes any sense.

Rogue One was the first time since 1983 that anything with the label on it felt like Star Wars, so I can’t agree that it felt “fake”.
I can’t agree with that at all. R1 feels “OT”, but the PT/TCW, Rebels and the ST are also part of SW and have their own “SW vibe”. Let’s not shrink SW to the 4 years era of the Rebel Civil War.
Cartoons don’t feel at all like Star Wars to me. And that includes the PT.

That’s exactly what the RO Soundtrack sounded like.
Make no mistake, I liked a lot of the soundtrack. The Guardians of the Whills suite is one of my favorite Star Wars pieces. I just think the title needed a burst of something classic.
Sometimes I listen to “Your Father Would be Proud” on repeat.
You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.
Episode 9 Rewrite, The Starlight Project (Released!) and Terminator Ultimatum,
This is a very interesting podcast taking a deep dive into the score. I thought I’d posted it already, but damn if I can find it. Anyway, very interesting stuff. I suspect I wasn’t the only one who felt\heard the cues back to the 1977 masterpiece of Williams, which I wore out the summer of 77 (and for all the years since). We’ve all heard the 77 score thousands of times probably, so I enjoy hearing analysis of the score. It’s an hour long, with the music examples starting around 15 minutes in.

Same here. The one track that still stands out to me from the Rogue One soundtrack.
I’m exceptionally partial to “The Imperial Suite” and “Hope”, myself.
“Master Switch” is probably the one that I come back to the most.
“Hope” is my morning alarm. It’s very effective.

Not even joking, gonna try this. Anything that makes me get up quicker each morning for glorious high school.
I really hope some day we can have complete score editions for the entire saga. I don’t think R1 is a great SW score, but as a Giacchino fan I love what he has achieved in a few weeks. I only dislike the partial re-use of SW themes (it sounds weird).

It works well for my brother and I. We wake up panicked that Darth Vader’s going to kill us. Then we remember that we’re going to high school, and wish Darth Vader was going to kill us instead 😉
.
Oh just you wait.
Does anyone else miss …
There are more important things missing.
Title crawl discussion aside, why didn’t we get the STAR WARS logo itself?
This film deserves it more than anything filmed during the previous ~20 years…
The other thing about the opening logo is that it’s not very appealing to the eye. The letters are too thin. It would help if they where filled with the yellow color instead of just outlines.
I think they didn’t have anything set for this new title format because they probably assumed they were going to go with the basic logo – crawl combo. Then pretty late into production it was decided to omit the traditional opening so they had to throw something together in half a day. And that logo can be done in half a day using After Effects (and some vector work in Illustrator), there is a tutorial easily found on youtube.
Using the tutorial I managed to change the logo into this which I think works a lot better but is still it’s own title style:

Yeah, that’s a lot better.
Very cool logo Dazman - nice work, and very much with a Star Wars vibe 😃

Thanks oojason! Can’t take the full credit for the design though, it’s a mod from one of the logos in the add campaign. I just don’t understand why they didn’t use one of those as they are better than the final one.
The fact that this is all we’ve been debating for the last couple pages suggests this was a pretty good film.

That reasoning is debatable.

Just got around to listening to that - some interesting views on the score and the film itself - with a fair few good points re the limited time Michael Giacchino had to come up with the whole thing, and also his inspirations and takes from previous themes (especially '77 Star Wars, cough… Obi Wan in the hut, et al 😃) as well as contributing his own.
Cool stuff on the voice work too!
Really enjoyed it - cheers mate 😃
