I’m not much of a soundtrack guy at all, so I really have no opinion on any them…but it’s interesting to hear you guys discuss how good TFA is after hearing months of how bad or boring it is.

That what happens when you listen to the soundtrack outside of the film.

I’m trying to imagine certain members here watching a movie outside of their brains.

Like a Vegan Shark that is most inconceivable. What is however are people not liking the soundtrack based on how it was presented in the film and to that I agree. The best example is “Snoke” which is a pretty good song but is reduced to mere background noise in the film.

Yeah, it’s a shame a lot of the score got buried in the mix.

Keep Circulating the Tapes.

Honestly it’s kinda background noise on the soundtrack too (probably the only track I regularly skip). I think the film used it exactly how it should have been.

By barely being able to hear it at all? Even though it’s more ambient than most songs on the soundtrack you can still hear the chanting clearly which you can’t when watching the film. And the 2nd part of the song is even less audible.

The mix is just fine considering it’s ambient nature, I do think you should just barely be able to hear it. The second part, with the strings, is in the second Snoke scene so if you’re looking for it in his first scene you won’t find it.

If the volume was a little higher (even by a smidget) it would be perfect

You’re right about that and you can definitely hear it in the second scene but again it’s more or less background noise. The chanting I kind understand but we should have been able to hear the strings a little more. I don’t recall other SW soundtracks burying melodies such as that one in the mixing.

The soundtrack for Phantom Menace was really good…such a shame the film was wank.

I wouldn’t really call that a melody though.

(not to mention the innumerable instances of SW films that omit whole sections of cues whole cloth)

Opinion: Princess Leia’s Theme & Tales of a Jedi Knight/Learn About the Force are the best pieces of music in any Star Wars film.

At the risk of becoming this thread’s resident annoying shit, I will say that “Princess Leia’s Theme” as it appears on the soundtrack is a concert suite and not in any film proper (well, it gets sort of a play in the ROTS end credit). Still, it is an utterly marvelous and possibly the best single concert arrangement of Williams career. And I want to agree with your sentiments, but unfortunately more cues from the original keep popping up in my head that are equally magnificent.

Princess Leia’s theme is by far my favorite piece.

  1. The Empire Strickes Back
  2. Return of the Jedi
  3. The Force Awakens
  4. The Phantom Menace
  5. Star Wars
  6. Attack of the Clones
  7. Revenge of the Sith

† I do really like this score, but due to how lists work, it has been relegated to a lower place than I might have wanted it to. (And no, I do not accept ties.)

Updated ranking, which I am pretty satisfied with:

  1. The Empire Strikes Back
    A really good soundtrack.

  2. Star Wars
I think I pretty severely underrated this soundtrack in my original ranking. After listening through it again, I really liked it.

  3. Return of the Jedi
Pretty good. Side note: It’s pretty much impossible to find a good version of this soundtrack that either doesn’t sound like crap or has been watered down to oblivion.

  4. The Force Awakens
    Thumbs up.

  5. Rogue One
I think most people underrate this soundtrack, but I loved how it sounded and worked in the movie. I also liked how it tied in with the A New Hope soundtrack.

  6. The Phantom Menace
Thumbs up. I especially like ‘Anikan’s Theme’.

  7. Attack of the Clones
Pretty unremarkable as far as Star Wars soundtracks go.

  8. Revenge of the Sith
Pretty much the same as Attack of the Clones.

If you want a high quality remaster of the ROTJ soundtrack then I give my highest recommendation to the ABC remaster. I also used to think there was nothing to salvage until I listened to that beauty.

It’s hard for me to rank the soundtracks, because unlike the films the quality is pretty damn consistently high.

Still - ANH and TESB are almost certainly #1 and #2 in some order… I’d probably put ANH first just because it was #1 and that movie might actually owe a decent amount of its success to the soundtrack.

I think the PT soundtracks (especially ROTS) are somewhat underrated here (although I would agree that AOTC is probably the worst soundtrack, although unlike the film the soundtrack is still very good). Just imagine how much more awful those films would be without William’s brilliant work

I also think the Rogue One soundtrack is very underrated… there been a decent amount of “It’s not John Williams so it’s obviously worse” when I don’t think that’s the case. In fact the ending of Rogue One with “your father would be proud” is some of the best music ever in a SW film.

Overall I think all the soundtracks are at least very good and many are great/fantastic.

Is that on the spleen? I didn’t find it. I used to have it but it has disappeared from my folders…

I think it may be named ‘ABC’s Star Wars OT Soundtracks Salvage’ on the spleen - weighing in at 2.77gb (though if you only wanted the ROTJ part it’d be a lot less 😃)

First of all, if you’re gonna count ET don’t shaft it in your rankings, and second of all, how is AOTC better than TPM, TFA, ROTS, and RO?
