I like the sound of that, not bad at all.

Watched the DVD and was reminded of how much I love this film and story. For me, a true breath of fresh air after decades of contamination. I like the title cards on locations, I like the lack of a crawl, and I like the cast of new characters. Excellent acting, directing, and cinematography. I also LOVE the score. Outstanding job on how it works with, as well as continues, Williams’ 1977 masterpiece. Again, I’ve been waiting on this for 40 years.

I’ll be watching it again in about an hour.

Edit

And THAT, is how you cast and direct a child actor. Beau Gadsdon, playing young Jyn, is outstanding.

I can’t wait to watch it this weekend as part of my first true SW marathon in a while. I just hope I can get my ROTJ DE disc to work in time 😛

Wait wait wait…didn’t Disney make this film?

Agreed. That so many find it underwhelming perplexes me.

Anything compared to a John Williams score is bound to sound at least a little underwhelming.

I thought the score was quite good for the amount of time required to make it.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

It’s rough but here’s a very nice video on how a Rogue One crawl could have looked: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qa-gaZLbeg0

There are a few interesting crawls in the Star Wars Fan Edit section on here - though this one stood out for me:-

http://www.space.ca/star-wars-rogue-one-crawl/ (with video of the crawl)…

ROGUE ONE

The Jedi are all but extinct, the
Republic has fallen and in their
wake, the Galactic Empire has
engulfed the far reaches of the
galaxy in fear.

Persecuted members of the Old
Republic have been thrust into
hiding. Only members of the
REBEL ALLIANCE dare take a
stand against the ruthless
Imperial forces.

Deep in the Outer Rim territories,
the dastardly Director Krennic
has discovered the location of a
long lost friend; one capable of
completing the Empire’s most
powerful weapon yet…

The more I read it the more I like it. For me the crawl fits the style and tone of the the OT crawls, as well as the Rogue One movie itself. It isn’t too long and doesn’t overburden the viewer with details or minutia, and ‘scans’ quite well too.

The 1st paragraph setting the outline of the Star Wars universe since the last film (chronologically Episode III),

It’s 2nd paragraph setting the current events - along with the acknowledgment of a fledgling Rebellion starting to fight back vs the oppressive Empire,

and the 3rd paragraph ‘setting the scene’, as it were, for the start of Rogue One itself…

all very well done 😃

I have always LOVED this crawl and have considered making a personal version of Rogue One with it as a crawl but I’m not exactly sure how I would remove the title card effectively.

Can you name more than 4 stellar songs from the album? I can do that with every single Star Wars soundtrack with the exception of this and AOTC.

Not sure why everyone knocks the AOTC score. Nearly every track on the album is stellar.

EDIT: In my opinion.

Not enough people read the EU.

Most of the tracks are good; the only one that’s really stellar of course is Across The Stars.

I have no idea either mate 😃 Though I’d love to see this in a Fan Edit - or like you, just added to ‘my version’ of the film itself…

The genius lads in the SW Fan Edit section on here will likely know how - and be of any other assistance too…

(luckily the original title card is very quick - and the scene where young Jyn is waiting in the bunker, and then Saw arrives, could/should be quite easily seam into the her waking up in the Imperial Prison cell. There is a little overlapping of the film score with Saw’s voice though - when Saw tells young Jyn ‘my child… come, we have a long ride ahead of us…’ around 7m.30s in - to get around…)

A little patience goes a long way on this old-school Rebel base. If you are having issues finding what you are looking for, these will be of some help…

I’ve still only watched R1 the one time in the theater, but there were several times where I thought "I like this music."
I don’t need it to be music I wanna go home and listen to. I never put on any of the SW soundtracks (except Princess Leia’s Theme on occasion), it just needs to work in the movie while I’m watching, and this score nailed it.

Since people were discussing it in this thread, I checked out the digital copy included with the bluray. Now, I specifically downloaded it via VUDU into the VUDU app on my iPad Air2. It only lets you download the “SD” version for watching offline. Online they offer something called HDX, but I haven’t tried that yet.

That being said, the “SD” digital version on VUDU looks like total GARBAGE. Seriously. YouTube videos look better. It’s a soft, almost blurry disaster of digital compression artifacts. It’s almost unwatchable. For kicks I tried a couple other movies I had codes for and they were the same.

As a comparison, I download stuff from Netflix regularly to watch offline while traveling. Granted, I set it to the highest quality download, but it looks significantly better than what I got from VUDU. Yes you can still see some compression but it’s not so bad as to almost single handedly destroy my ability to enjoy what I’m watching.

All I can say is viva la physical media. I know they’re trying to compromise so people don’t fill up their portable devices with only one movie or a couple of tv episodes, but GEEZ. They’ve got a LONG way to go before digital media can begin to replace physical media (for commercially available products) in my library…

A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Last Jedi.

Having been able to deep-dive Rogue One since its home release, I’ve realized I don’t really care about the ST as much as I did two years ago. I enjoyed the first hour of The Force Awakens very much, as well as the last five minutes. The rest, however, didn’t move me strongly one way or another nor has it aged as well as I’d hoped.

In the end, I really only care about Rey and Chewie. The acting was strong with Finn and Poe, but they’re secondary for me. Kylo, Snoke, & Co are just filler (to me). Having long since been worn out on the fimilial tone of the franchise from ROTJ on, Han and the Princess having a son was of little interest to me.

Truth be told, Rogue One is the second Star Wars film I’ve always wanted. It works perfectly with the only Star Wars film I’ve ever loved, so it’s only fitting. It’s visual separation from the franchise - title cards for planets & locations, no opening crawl, and its serious tone all help strengthen that bond for me. I’m on a staycation this week using up some vacation days I’ll otherwise lose, so my three (and counting) viewings have had a nice feeling of escape.

No doubt, I’ll be seeing The Last Jedi the day it opens. However, I won’t be terribly disappointed if it turns out to be less than stellar. The trailer released today was good as a teaser. No spoilers and just enough to pique interest. I will say though, the teaser one-sheet is fantastic. Best Star Wars one-sheet in a very long time. I like that the illustration of the saber energy matches the stone engraving that someone uncovers in the teaser. Maybe it’s a hint of some soon-to-be-revived ancient order of good.

Rogue One… or how I realised how to stop worrying and watch TFA. This is a cold, grey movie. I overlooked certain flaws (while admitting it’s lacking character development) on the first viewing, but seeing it again today one thing crept up on me. It’s kind of a dull slog up the end when they throw in a big spectacle. Tarkin is horrible. His head is even the wrong shape never mind the bad CGI or the bad voice acting. Leia is horrible, especially the way her lips move on her teeth when she says “hope” which is clearly not a new piece of audio. I want to like this movie, really. But it’s not happening, despite my lukewarm first impression which was more positive than not. The things that I liked before just didn’t provide the excitement another time around, and it doesn’t hold up. Sorry for the weird complaining but I just wanted to get it out of my system.

Doug Chiang did a good job in this movie. I think K2SO’s design was over the top, and the temple extraction stuff was stupid looking, but that whole idea was stupid anyway. Just goes to show you that competent people can do good work in an otherwise bad movie.

Wait a minute… you didn’t like Rogue One, the whole idea was stupid and thought it was a bad movie?

This is brand new information. You should let others know immediately - and in case they don’t acknowledge your views - keep on repeating it ad nauseam.

Maybe, to keep things ‘fresh’ add a line about vaguely liking something from it - I mean, you wouldn’t want to become the forum bore now, would you?

Correct.

Wrong. The execution was laughably bad. It had some good ideas.

It was.

Actually, in case you don’t know how to read, my post was a compliment for Doug Chiang. The Yavin 4 sets looked authentic. Even the new designs were mostly nice looking.

The fact that you can’t stand any criticism of this movie, and expect this to be a fan thread, or a safe space, and even the sight of someone who dislikes the movie stopping in to compliment one of the artists involved in making it, makes you lose your mind, shows how deeply insecure you are about the quality of the movie you profess to be so good.
