I actually think the opposite, up until the climax. Having a caretaker-type person who isn’t important in his own right allows you to have the echo of Palpatine still be an active antagonistic force long after his death, while allowing Kylo to be the central “bad guy” for the majority of the film. It only breaks down at the climax, where if you can’t have a confrontation between Kylo and Rey since he’s been redeemed, you really need a genuine physical battle against a galaxy-threatening foe to tie into the Resistance story.

+1 to that. Just making it “sensed the end of her Jedi path” is simple and elegant and gels with the movie and wider canon.

I’ve set my computer to render a workprint overnight, so, hopefully I’ll have it uploaded sometime tomorrow!

Commentary always sounds easy but it can actually be really tricky. Kudos for recognising that and taking your time with it.

The tricky thing might be to write and record Sifo Dyas new dialogue so that it is evident that he is merely the messenger and not the real mastermind.
Other than that there could be some opportunities to hint at his real identity, for example it could be him that warns Gunray that the ambassadors are Jedi knights or he could propose to buy a better army.

I always thought “Sifo Dyas” was Dooku, considering Obi-Wan confirms that the real Sifo Dyas died before the clone army was ordered.

Not that that necessarily impacts on your idea - just cut those lines from AOTC and it’s fine.

I really like all of these ideas. It would be tricky to turn the Palpatine footage into holograms since he looks so different in TROS than in ROTJ, but maybe even filming a new actor in costume with an obscured face could be used to dub the dialogue over.

I agree that the ending with the Force lightning needs something else. I think it needs to connect with the fleet literally and Rey stops it, otherwise you run into that same issue of Rey’s journey being disconnected from saving the Resistance and the Galaxy. Plus, incidental falling debris knocking Ben into a pit would be similarly unsatisfying, I think.

It’s all worth pursuing though. I really like the idea of obscuring Palpatine’s face and dubbing him over with a very different voice; in my head I read your dialogue as sounding something like Vaneé from Rogue One.

Gen 2 is always going to be my favourite and I could probably write a hundred page essay explaining why I think it’s the best one. I haven’t played Gen 8 yet, but I’ve been watching the show with my son recently and it’s sold me on Gen 8 as a whole.

Replace Snoke’s dialogue with the Greek dub and subtitle him with his dialogue in English.

• GMatias sent me a 4k version of the shot of Snoke I needed; I’ve integrated it into the edit and the shot transition looks great now.
• I’m working on Rose’s line using clips from Cobalt Squadron. It’s slow going because there’s so many different options for words and phonemes - it’s nearly a five hour audio file of KMT talking! - and there’s a few different ways the sentence can be worded depending on the available inflections of different words. I’ve got something I’m about 75% happy with right now, and I’ll post a WIP audio file when I’ve got it to, say, 80% happy with it.
• SparkySywer has kindly offered to render the opening crawl for me, but I’m going to make sure I’m completely happy with every word first. Here’s what I have currently, which I’m happy with right now as a final draft:

The FIRST ORDER reigns. The New Republic has been decimated, and in this state of galactic confusion, Supreme Leader Snoke’s armies have seized key territories and taken military control of the galaxy.

Only General Leia Organa’s band of RESISTANCE fighters stand against the rising tyranny, certain that Jedi Master Luke Skywalker will return and restore a spark of hope to the fight.

But the Resistance has been tracked down and exposed. As the First Order speeds toward the rebel base, the brave heroes mount a desperate escape…

I was thinking Snorlax would replace the pile of rocks that blocks the Resistance’s escape on Crait, and Rey plays the Pokeflute to move it.

I feel like Luke should have a raggedy old Pikachu. And maybe, idk, when Luke dies maybe it evolves into Raichu.

Maybe Pikachu is dynamaxing during the Force projection, and Luke is absorbing the Galar Particles. Or maybe the Force projection is something to do with Ultra Wormholes?

Those are both really good suggestions for Rey to have. I personally really like Tyranitar, so it would have my vote. What would Kylo have? Maybe Sneasel, and it evolves to Weaville when he declares himself Supreme Leader?

Idea: Snoke has Mewtwo in the armour from the First Movie. Instead of showing Rey the Resistance fleet, he shows her Mewtwo defeating powerful Pokémon. Mewtwo has his revelation from the First Movie, and uses Telekinesis to cut Snoke in half instead of Kylo.

There’s also a Persian on Snoke’s lap.

I’ve still got the rest of my TLJ: Stoic Edition and TROS novelisation edits to finish first, but I wanted to make a post for this because it keeps bouncing around in my brain and I want other people’s ideas.

Based on these posts in the Worst Edit Ideas thread, Pokémon: The Last Jedi is an (obviously) not-too-serious edit of TLJ, replacing the John Williams soundtrack with appropriate music from the Pokémon games, replacing all of the fight scenes with Pokémon battles, and adding a few Pokémon into the regular TLJ footage. I can’t stop thinking about it.

This is the kind of edit that I figure is probably more fun to let everyone have a say in, rather than just me running the show. Right now, I wanna figure out:

• Which Pokémon do different characters have? I’d like to give each of the main cast a “walking Pokémon” that follows them around, which I’ll add to the actual TLJ footage.
• Which music tracks from Pokémon fit each scene?

Maybe Rose has an Aipom riding on her shoulder all the time. Maybe BB-8 is replaced with an Electrode that rolls around, and his beeps and whistles are replaced with “ELECTRODE!” from the cartoon. Maybe BB-9E is a Gastly. I have no idea what Pokémon Rey would have - Trapinch?

I know Luke at the start has got to have the “…” text at the bottom of the screen, and have Red’s team from the top of Mount Silver. And when Rey smashes the Ahch-To fish nun’s wheelbarrow it initiates a battle where the fish nun has six Magikarp.

Right now the only boring technical thing worth thinking about is how I’ll remove the music from TLJ; the only 5.1 channel version I have is Hal’s edit, and I’d prefer to use the theatrical cut for this.

As Hal has requested this topic doesn’t continue in this thread for the time being, any further discussion of Rey Nobody should be done in the Rey Nobody thread.

Everyone on here keeps their language PG-13 so much compared to the rest of the internet that whenever someone swears it makes me laugh.
