I don’t think “awe inspiring” is a requirement for good VFX. There wasn’t a shot in Apes where I was aware of the fact that I was watching mocapped CGI - I fully bought that I was watching these living characters on screen the entire time. I couldn’t say that for the first two (though the second came close).

With the Oscars approaching, I’d like to call for a moment of silence in honor of the 1978 Academy Award for Best Director that should’ve gone to George Lucas and didn’t.

We could always break into Woody Allen’s house and steal it? 😛

If Mark were to present Best Supporting Actor, I wanted him to basically go “and the oscar goes to… me! *joker laugh* *leaves*”

IMO he deserved a nomination at the very least.

If half of what I’m hearing about academy voters this year is true, my opinion of the Oscars has sunk to an all time low.

What have you been hearing about the Academy voters?

There’ve been a lot of “secrect Oscar ballots” this year that have proven many members to be complete dipshits. This really isn’t anything new, however (if anything the Oscars are only getting better, as they are aggressively adding more relevant members and phasing out the craggy old farts).

Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing
I really don’t understand the difference between the two, so I pass.

My Vote: I abstain.

Why does this person even get to vote for anything if they don’t know anything?

Indeed mate - and also why isn’t there some bumph somewhere in some sort of ‘Info Pack’ explaining the difference so people can educate themselves - in what the Academy ‘define’ each category as? (before they get anywhere near being in a position to vote for this type of thing)

Forgive my grumpiness - I’m a little disappointed this wasn’t an Oscar from Sesame Street thread - maybe getting his own film based on a future/alternative 2018. Now that would win awards (mainly from me).

A little patience goes a long way on this old-school Rebel base. If you are having issues finding what you are looking for, these will be of some help…

Final voting is for everyone in the academy. I’ve long thought that they should combine these categories for this exact reason.

Isn’t the difference between sound mixing and sound editing pretty self explanatory?

Army of Darkness: The Medieval Deadit | The Terminator - Color Regrade | The Wrong Trousers - Audio Preservation
SONIC RACES THROUGH THE GREEN FIELDS.
THE SUN RACES THROUGH A BLUE SKY FILLED WITH WHITE CLOUDS.
THE WAYS OF HIS HEART ARE MUCH LIKE THE SUN. SONIC RUNS AND RESTS; THE SUN RISES AND SETS.
DON’T GIVE UP ON THE SUN. DON’T MAKE THE SUN LAUGH AT YOU.

Considering “sound editing” is a misnomer, not really no.

Wouldn’t “sound editing” be, well, the editing of the audio? In conjunction with the editing of the image? Like, you put one bang here, and then another bang three seconds later. There, you’ve done some sound editing.

Sound mixing is entirely different.

You mean, the sound editing in the 2004 OT DVDs isn’t bad but the sound mixing is?

I guess I don’t remember anything about the SE sound mix, so I wouldn’t know.

Though some of the 2004/2011 sound editing is bad, like the replacement dragon calls.

If the Academy were real it wouldn’t be so bad at choosing movies. That said I’ve only seen one of the Best Picture nominees and very few in other categories. Wish Kimmel would start telling jokes already. I’m 4/9.
