There was a time when it wasn’t exactly cool to admit liking the 60’s show, (especially around the time of the 1989 film) so it was gratifying to see people acknowledge it’s place in Batman history, and Adam West embark on a whole second career after too many years of being typecast.
Family Guy was never my cup of tea, but I always thought West’s mayor character was hilarious.

He also appeared a few times on a dumb cartoon from the time of my childhood as Catman, or rather an aging actor who used to play Catman, before eventually becoming the character. The rest of the show doesn’t hold up well, but his appearances do.

I sort of remember that. He and Burt Ward voiced one of the Filmation Batman series in the 70’s.
Adam returned to Batman again in the very last season of Superfriends in the mid 80’s, by then retitled The Super Powers Team:Galactic Guardians. He played Batman totally straight in that and was terrific. An episode revolving around crime alley, (where Wayne’s parents died) was especially good for a Saturday morning cartoon, probably because it was penned by a future writer of the 90’s series.

Another 60s icon is gone. The world is a whole lot less funny now. His Batman series was unavailable on home video for so long that he predicted he would no longer be around to see its release, so he recorded his own commentary tracks on some episodes in case he died before an official release. At least he was able to see that happen, and how much he was loved for it

The Saint and now The Caped Crusader.

The series was such great exuberant corn. I met Adam West briefly at a car show. Seemed like a good guy.

RIP

I used to love the '60s Batman, but unfortunately it stopped being my cup of tea long ago. Nevertheless, I loved West’s guest appearance in The Simpsons episode “Mr. Plow”.

When I first saw Robinson Crusoe On Mars on tv as a kid, I was utterly confused by Adam West’s characters fate early in the movie, as I presumed he must be the hero.

There was some Police Squad esque show he did in the 80’s, can’t recall if it was just a pilot or a short lived series, that he was pretty funny in.

I watched it all the time as a kid growing up in the 60s. Hadn’t seen it in decades… now that I’m older I can see and appreciate the funny campy stuff that flew over my head as a kid. It looks like a completely different show, and cool in a different way.

This is a bad one. My lifelong hero and moral compass since I was four years old. Truthfully, no words. I’ll just have to let this one sink in. I watch the show regularly, drink out of a 66 show coffee cup every day, have several t-shirts in regular rotation, and a few other things. The 60s show and film are the only live action Batman I own. To say I’m a fan would be a huge understatement. This evening I raised a glass to someone who has been part of very nearly my entire life.

A marathon tomorrow for sure. Beyond that, this one is going to take a while to process.

Unlike most kids my age, West really was my Batman. Sure, I watched the JL cartoons, but I mostly watched those for Superman. For Batman, I popped in the 66 movie or watched reruns of the show when I found them. My mom even made a Robin shirt for me when I was 4 years old, and man, what I wouldn’t give to be wearing it now.

EDIT: Pretty much like this, but with green sleeves sewn on.

I am also saddened by Adam West’s passing. I wouldn’t say he was “my” Batman (I’ve never even considered the series a “real” Batman adaptation), but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed '66 Batman for what it was since I was little; a comedy based on the Batman series characters and settings. West was perfectly cast in the title role of such a series, not to mention that he was perfectly capable of playing the character straight.

RIP Mr. West, you will be missed.

The show was very much a real adaptation of Batman. Several episodes were based on specific issues. The show was a live version of the Silver Age Batman comic books. It may not seem correct to fans of Nolan or 21st century graphic novels, but it was exactly who the character was in print at the time.

This article in Forbes explains it in detail.

RIP Adam West. He was the first Batman I saw, even though it was via reruns in the early 80’s.

I’m fully aware that the Batman comics were like that at the time of the 1960s (though IIRC it wasn’t a satirical comedy like the show). I was just saying that I never considered it “real” Batman, in the sense that it adapted the character as he was originally invented and came to be known as again in the 1980s; a dark hero.

I grew up preferring the Burton films and TAS as the definitive Bat-aptations (and I still do), so taking the '66 series seriously would’ve been difficult, and all things considered, nobody was meant to take it seriously in the first place. It was a fun, camp-filled comedy romp that, in its own way (as mentioned), was a comic book on the screen. (Don’t even mention Chris Nolan, those films aren’t Batman or even comic book at all.)

I actually watched the movie more than the series as a kid, though after MeTV started airing the show I would watch it on there frequently. I haven’t seen the new animated film though.

Anyway, I wasn’t saying that as a negative to the show, it’s just how I thought of it growing up.

Speaking of Adam West%2C I was rewatching the animated series and there was an episode in Season 1 where Adam West played a character called the Gray Ghost%2C who was a character that Bruce Wayne watched as a kid on tv. It was a neat little nod to the past%2C and a real treat to have 2 iconic Batman actors in one show.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

I loved that episode, especially when I realized it was Adam West.

That was perfect shot of Vir to use. Although if you know the context, it’s a bit macabre.

The voice of a fair few childhoods there mate - hadn’t realised he’d done quite so many programs (and featured in Dr Who too).
