Been wondering for awhile if anyone has figured out a way to remove Finn turning on the chess set in TFA.
Let your imaginations soar here and let the editors decide what’s actually possible and appealing to them.
There are spoilers for ‘Episode IX: The Rise Of Skywalker’ from page 17 onwards of this thread.
Mod Edit: A quick reminder that the Star Wars Preservation and Star Wars Fan Edit sections of the site are NOT the places to bash on certain eras or aspects of the films, actors, film-makers or owners - or any perceived ‘agendas’ or politics thereof.
There are far more relevant threads in the Beyond the Original Trilogy or General Star Wars Discussion sections of the site to talk about this.
Critiquing a scene in the Star Wars Fan Edits section with the aim of improving it, removing it, altering it etc is perfectly fine. Statements such as ‘Disney sucks’ and ‘this film is so shit no Fan Edit can save it’ is not.

Move Luke and ach-to to end of ep 7 move Starkiller base to beginning of 8.
Have Han Luke and Leia all die in 8.
Get rid of Starkiller Base entirely and make it a normal planet (this means painting out the big circle and cutting all references to the station). It could just be the place where they take Rey and the second part of the map is.
put them back in theaters and let me radically re-do my watching of them.
I would probably wait to see what happens in 9 first.
With that said I’ve been personally working on a fairly major cut of TLJ, either to stand alone as a shorter movie or as an extra part of a really long TFA. (I love TFA as it is, or with the Hal 9000 restructure.) I don’t have the expertise to get the audio and music transitions and everything to go smoothly, and it’s choppy in places, but it reflects what I want.
Basically I have two main issues with TLJ. They’re not very original and many people have had the same issues.
I cut almost every scene with Rose and every scene with Holdo, which means Finn is also conspicuously absent, but it can’t be helped. No Poe subplot either, no Canto Bight, no DJ. Rose is now just a member of the Resistance who participates in the final battle, her “meet cute” with Finn is when they both crash during the battle (no kiss or dialogue) and Rey looks on approvingly at Finn giving her the blanket on the Falcon.
Leia isn’t ever wounded; Kylo Ren’s choice not to kill her actually matters. Her maternal love for him and her connection with the Force are manifest in that way, instead of a goofy space flight.
The First Order figures out how to shoot at the obvious transport ships on their own. The hyperspace ram is pulled off by Luke, repurposing the scene of him straining to contact the unconscious Leia (and Yoda’s lightning bolt. Yoda is not in the movie.) We only see the chair from the back and can figure out later that it was his projection in the chair. This gives Luke’s role more punch and justifies the map subplot a lot more in TFA. I prefer Luke not dying at the end (since it means Kylo Ren “killed” him anyway,) but he can.
Luke and Rey’s interactions are carefully arranged so that Luke is still grumpy, but he wants to teach her. He mourns Han in the Falcon as soon as he finds out. Luke doesn’t hate the Jedi or criticize them. The audience can infer (since Han already told us in TFA, and there are scenes where Luke says this in TLJ) that he felt guilty and like he failed as a teacher. He doesn’t want to take on new students because he doesn’t feel like he can be trusted with them, and he’s worried about them turning to the dark side - he almost gives up training Rey when she starts looking into the dark side cave. Luke’s interpretation of his confrontation with Ben is the correct one and an alternate is never presented. Rey’s anger at Luke is just about him not thinking Ben can be saved, and trying to leave, not that she thinks he’s a murderer.
PM me if you want to see the rough cut.
I would love to see what you have done.
Restructure idea for the Last Jedi get rid of the first battle and have the crawl explain the first battle, and finn waking up. and start the flim with a pan down to space Drednot comes in kylo smashes his mask. Space battle Kylo “kills"Leia” wipe to rey and luke get rid of him throwing the saber, Or have time past and have the audience wondered what happened.
Am I the only one who likes luke throwing the saber?, Oh well…

I do! I haven’t had a chance to try it myself yet, but I would really like to see someone just try to have the swell of the music line up with the moment Luke tosses the saber. I think it could be a simple change, but with an effective difference.
Radical idea guys: Just watch the other movies and pretend these didn’t happen

Not so radical idea: make a relevant post in the thread

I liked it too - something unexpected and different right off the bat, a change in the direction expected from the emotional last scene of TFA - and all the time we had between the two films to ponder what may happen next…
Luke throwing the saber away was a fairly radical idea in itself 😉
A little patience goes a long way on this old-school Rebel base. If you are having issues finding what you are looking for, these will be of some help…

Good idea. Terrible execution.
Here are a few ideas that I am going to just throw out there. Some may work and some may not.
Make a shot of the Supremacy in TFA.
Have Starkiller base blow up the resistance base on Hosnian.
Have the rag tag fleet be the remnants of those that escaped.
Not so radical, remove all the brain dead humor.
Take out the idea of the resistance in TFA, I never liked that they were resisting the first order but the republic was not. That seems weird.
Make time pass between TFA and TLJ, like months, even a year.
Like I mentioned above, have starkiller base sequence occur at the beginning of TLJ.
Have Luke begin training Rey in TFA and finish (or cut short) in TLJ.
Have the mind link between Rey and Kylo begin in TFA after they meet and she reverses his mind reading onto him.
Have Luke do something to actually warrant his death, like destroy the Supremacy.
Make Poe less of a Mary Sue, he has plot armor and knows it, the audience knows it, he can say anything and do anything because he winks at the audience. Reduce this greatly. Don’t make him such a good pilot that he makes Darth Vader’s piloting look worthless. He makes the bad ass and very serious fighter pilots from the OT look worthless and chumpy. Cut up his ridiculous attack run on Maz’s planet and dreadnought attack run. Give it some drama. It is one thing to be a good pilot and another to be far beyond the skills of anyone ever. He is not a super hero.
Ironically I felt that the ST lacked the political context that the PT suffered from, like it would have just helped to see what the Rebels had fought so much for so we knew what the stakes are within the story.
It’d be cool if the resistance were the surviving elements of the Republic Fleet. An opening scene in TFA could be the Republic Fleet pursuing and outnumbering the First Order, only to be entirely wiped out by the ‘Mysterious Hyperspace Weapon’. Perhaps Leia senses the trap and jumps away in the Raddus just in time.
I like that opening idea.
I wonder if some footage from this week’s episode of The Expanse could be used and modified to make Starkiller blow up the Hosnian System’s star instead of the weird beam-splitting thing that hits every planet individually. Plus there’s the added benefit that Starkiller would, you know…kill stars. Right now it’s more of a Star Eater.
Replace AT-STs with the more unique AT-HSs, and remove the AT-ATs. Reuse of OT vehicles should be reduced to a minimum. Ideally nothing except standard TIEs and X-Wings should return.
Would be cool to give the Falcon a slightly different look, like red stripes or something.

I really would have liked a lot more battle damage and general wear and tear. Maybe show that the top gunner turret was blown out and had to have metal plating covering it. Would have explained why Finn and Rey were acting like there was only one operational turret in TFA.
You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

Yeah, I just feel like a paint job would be more feasible for a fan editor.
True.

Like I said in a similar thread, my ideal scenario would be a new ship, as right now the Falcon is in the awkward middle ground between “an essential part of every episode of the saga” like R2 and 3PO and “a distinct aspect of this particular episodic trilogy” like Luke and Rey. At least Chewbacca was sort of in the Prequels.
I’m no color grading aficionado, so don’t blame me if this is a dumb question, but could the color grading of TLJ be messed with to be more similar to TFA?
