The alien face morph in that scene actually does remind me of ReBoot era CGI. How does anyone notice anything else? Maybe that was the idea.

How about Ewan McGregors terrible reshoot beard?

Oh, and the wig.

It’s not even noticeable. General Dodonna’s the only one in SW with a distractingly fake beard.

Obi Wan in AoTC outside the club would like the world’s biggest word with you.

Mind provide a screenshot?

Wow. One of the few times I’ve ventured out of the preservations section and saw this thread.

Here’s my rankings:

  1. The Empire Strikes Back
  2. Star Wars
  3. Return of the Jedi
  4. All other Star Wars films

Seriously, arguing over the merits of which of the films post ROTJ are more mediocre than the other is such a waste of energy.

The best stories post ROTJ have come from the EU in books, games and comics (though there has been a lot of terrible stuff too in the EU). Rebels was pretty great too.

But as far as films go, every one post ROTJ has been disappointing, just to different degrees. For me the sequel trilogy films have been the worst. Mainly because I can see the unrealised potential squandered in them.

So here is my updated ranking of all the things that could remotely be considered Star Wars films, after finally watching the Clone Wars movie today:

  1. Star Wars - A classic all around, a great movie in general which transcends the franchise.
  2. The Empire Strikes Back - Perhaps the best ‘Star Wars’ movie, though not quite as timeless as the first.
  3. The Force Awakens - A few very good ideas executed very well, though suffering from a weak third act.
  4. The Last Jedi - A lot of very good ideas executed less well than in TFA, but with a strong third act.
  5. Return of the Jedi - An obligatory sequel which pays the price for its lack of vision.
  6. The Phantom Menace - A Sci-fi movie about space Nascar, trade disputes and weird emotionless monks.
  7. Revenge of the Sith - Finally answering all our questions about the saga in the dumbest way possible.
  8. Ewoks: The Battle for Endor - Like ROTJ except only the Ewok bits. Still a better love story than AOTC.
  9. Attack of the Clones - This was the movie that killed Star Wars, before ROTS dumped it into a lava pit.
  10. Caravan of Courage - More of a fairy tale than a space opera, but it’s still a movie.
  11. The Clone Wars (2008) - Not really a movie. It does still have a plot though, just not a good one.
  12. The Star Wars Holiday Special - Almost so bad that it’s good. Almost.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.
Episode 9 Rewrite, The Starlight Project (Released!) and ANH Technicolor Project (Released!)

Haha, I know at this point I should assume most Star Wars fans don’t like the prequels, but since we usually just talk about the sequels, Nev, I’m kind of surprised how much you hate the prequels! I love your brief descriptions of them though, especially for ROTS.

He missed those, but remembered the Ewok films, surprisingly.

I wouldn’t take the blurbs too seriously, as I don’t really hate any of the movies. The closest I get to that is with AOTC, and it still has Across the Stars to redeem it.

DominicCobb said:

Neverar, I think you missed a couple.

You think it’s weird to consider the Ewok Movies over the Disney Standalone films? 😉
I legitimately forgot they existed while making the list, since I view them as existing on a different axis from all the rest. Solo and Rogue One are good movies and on that metric they would be among the Sequel trilogy movies in rank, but on the other hand they don’t feel at all similar to Episodes 1-8 and on that metric they would rank below the rest. So what to do? Anyway, here’s an attempt, but I’m not justifying them with numbers:

® Rogue One - A visually stunning exercise in computer animators using the dead as hand puppets.
  5. Return of the Jedi - An obligatory sequel which pays the price for its lack of vision.
$ Solo: A Star Wars Story - A horror story about a sentient robot being enslaved within a ship’s computer.

I think I am ready to rate the 3 newest films. So here goes.

1 - The Empire Strikes Back - Irvin Kershner and Leigh Brackett raise this one above Lucas’s original.
2 - A New Hope - The classic that started it all.
3 - Return of the Jedi - The story of redemption and the conclusion to the original trilogy lift this one and make it hard to compare to.
4 - Rogue One - An awesome war movie that is nicely self contained.
5 - The Last Jedi - It doesn’t quite come up to the originals, but it is the closest since 1983.
6 - The Phantom Menace - The Republic, Jedi, a bad ass Sith warrior, some familiar faces and just an all around epic story set in the Old Republic. It felt right when it came out and I still love it, even with its flaws.
7 - Solo - Hard to pin this one since I haven’t seen it as many times. I think here because while it captured the spirit of the character and the universe (especially the old Brian Daley novels), it failed to really expand the Star Wars universe and go beyond the character. It also had some predictable story points. It was safe and well done.
8 - Revenge of the Sith - The major flaw of this film is it was produced as the last of 6 films, not to be the third. Other than that it was awesome and probably the highest quality of the prequels.
9 - Attack of the Clones - Well, Lucas tried. The basic story is sound, but Anakin is too … many things. The film is greatly flawed and the only one of the Lucas made films that I wanted a fan edit the first time I saw it.
10 - The Force Awakens - A good film, but it is the only one that has such egregiously unrealistic scenes that it yanked me out of the film. The character scenes were great, but the overall story is the weakest of any of the films. But even as the weakest it is still an awesome movie.

Clone Wars 2008 - I don’t consider this a film. It is just a selection of episodes (5 I think) produced for the first season of the series that made a nice movie length story. Basicallly a pilot film.
Star Wars Holdiday Special - I love the Wookie scenes. With a fan edit it might just make a nice short.
The Ewok Films - I can’t rate these. Even though I own them on DVD, I haven’t watched them. They are aimed at kids to capitalize on the Ewok cuteness. Just trying to watch the first one I found it to be a bigger train wreck than the SWHS.

I’ve made it pretty clear before that I don’t believe that anybody actually likes the Holiday Special. I know that’s really conspiratorial and ridiculous, but I refuse to believe that anybody claiming to enjoy the Holiday Special is telling me the truth.

LOL! I would classify the Holiday Special as a tv show, not a Star Wars film. 😉

The Last Jedi - A lot of very good ideas executed less well than in TFA, but with a strong third act.

It doesn’t stop there. It has two third acts.

The basic story is sound, but Anakin is too … many things.

That reminds me of a scene in RotS’s blooper reel where Lucas looks at concept for Anakin says “It’s too…much.”.

I don’t think the Clone Wars Movie or any of the furry TV movies should count as Star Wars films. They are Star Wars (unfortunately) but they’re just TV specials, one of which happened to be released theatrically (God, Lucas, what were you thinking). And in case you’re wondering, it’s actually four episodes. We even have the titles and everything.
