Buring AVI's to DVD - Sync issues!!!

Author
Time
Ok.

Because I live in the Uk I have to d'l torrents to keep up to date with TV shows - 'Lost' especially.
For the first 6 episodes everything was fine.
I'd d/l the AVI file and burn it onto a dvd disc using nero. Happy days!

Now for some reason when I burn it onto disc the sound goes out of sync after about 5 mins. (usually when the first commercial break is on - although this is cut from the file, you know where it is)

Does anyone here know how to fix this problem, because watching Lost when it's 1 - 2 secs out of sync is the biggest pain in the arse!!

Thanks

Is the problem with sound sync on your disc being played on a standalone dvd player, or your pc's dvd player?

I'm not very technically minded but is it possible to upgrade the firmware in your standalone dvd player?

As your pc's divx player (or other media player) downloads updates/codecs to play files, the divx part of your standalone dvd player may not be up to date as your pc's - and therefore struggles to play them?

It's on my standalone player. Well players really coz I tried playing them on both, but no good.
The thing is, for the first 6 or so episodes everything was fine, now I get nothing but shit!!

I think it's fine on my pc, but to be honest I've not watched an episode all the way thru, just skipped along to see if it was all in sync, which it was.

hmmnn.. can only recommend watching the thing all the way through (or rather leaving it on play and returning every 15mins to see if the synch probs are on the downloaded file itself).

Other than that m8 - try www.dvdrhelp.com or the doom9.org forums - sorry m8.

When I used to have similar probs I updated everything - the standlone dvd player firmware, my dvdwriter frimware, the divx player codecs and updates, and let it connect to the internet everytime it wanted to (firewalls can be a bit picky with media players etc)

Cool pic sig btw

Do you burn AVI files to a data DVD (and your player is MPEG-4 - or "DivX" - compatible)? Or do you use Nero to convert the AVIs into MPEG-2 and burn the disc in DVD video format?

I just burn the AVI files without converting anything. I tried converting the file to a mgeg, but lost a lot of quality doing so. So all I do now is drag the AVI file and make my own DVD video.
Like I said all was fine, but now it's all gone to shit!!

If you make a DVD video, the file is converted into MPEG-2, and the disc is structured in accordance with the DVD-video standard (i.e. VIDEO_TS folder, etc.)

So which is it?

Right, you're losing me a little here

What I do is download the file (eg Lost)
It is, as far as I believe an AVI file.
Then using nero I simply just add that file to burn as DVD video, and that's it.

But now the sync goes poo poo and it's just doing my bloody head in!!!

Ok, get one of the discs you've already done, pop it in your PC, and open it in explorer.

What files does it say are on there?

What he's asking is if the DVD has an AVI file, or if it has been converted to the DVD format files. If you open up and you see only an AVI file, then you only moved that file to the DVD. If you open up and see lots of files and some directories, that's a DVD format disc.

All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. OK, sounds as if Nero has converted your AVI into a DVD. (Your description is not exactly what I'd expect; there should be two folders in the root directory, AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS. The AUDIO_TS folder should be empty. The VIDEO_TS folder should contain IFO, VOB and BUP files such as VIDEO_TS.IFO and VTS_01_1.VOB.)

Anyway, this is bad. Nero is not the best program to use for converting video.

First thing to consider; can your player play MPEG-4 video? It may have a "DivX Certified" logo on it or just say MPEG-4 compatible. If so, you're in luck. Simply burn the AVI file to a data CD, and it should play.

If it can't play MPEG-4, then think about getting one that can. Or a modded X Box. Or a laptop with TV-out. Any of these options is preferable to an AVI to DVD conversion.

As a last resort, you can convert. Use another program for the conversion; Nero is good for the burning only. There are hundreds of different methods of AVI -> DVD, everyone has their preference. Start reading the guides at videohelp.com.

While you're here Moth3r, I have a question: I used my digital camera to get MPEG movie footage of my children's school Christmas concert. What do I have to do with the footage to make it playable on my DVD player, which is VCD and SVCD compatible?

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

I'm having exactly the same problem. As the man said, its not even every episode, some are fine, but some get hideously out of synch.

Is it best then to use a program to convert the AVI into mpeg 2, then burn it? If so, what prog would you recommend?

Check whether the video complies with the specs for VCD - i.e. MPEG-1 352x240 1150kbps etc. If so, then you can use it to author a VCD. If it is some other resolution, then you will need to re-encode first.

I have my own preferred method for converting AVIs to DVD, using VirtualDubMod, AVISynth, CCE and DVDAuthorGUI.

I've heard other programs mentioned (WinAVI?) that are more automated and user-friendly.

Nit of googling last night turnied up this tutorial:

http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/avi_to_dvd_avi2dvd.cfm

it gives you the choice of turning the AVI into VOB files or an ISO. Trying it now

So when you say burn it to a data cd, (not dvd?) you mean just burn it in nero using the data thing and not the video or audio option.
Sorry if I sound like a complete noob, but when it comes to all this I'm still learning.

Cheers man, you're a star.

In NERO use the data dvd option NOT the dvd video option. That way it will burn your .avi file as an .avi file.

Moth3r, I checked out the properties of my MPEG movie files, and they come up as 320x240 @ 192kbps. How would I go about making these files VCD ready?

Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

The easiest way is probably to use TMPGEnc (free for MPEG-1/VCD encoding), and follow this guide at videohelp.com.

One is a Sony and the other is JVC.

But I checked and neither of them play Mpeg 4 or Divx files, but I did see a cheapo DVD player in a local store that plays Meg4 and divx, so I might just go and buy that.

Will that solve my problem??
