Star Wars: Underworld (Cancelled Live Action Series) - general discussion thread — Page 4

Well this was unexpected. New details have emerged about the cancelled series and from quite a surprising place.

The director for the new God of War game used to work for Lucasfilm and got to read the scripts for the now abandoned series. Here’s an excerpt from a recent interview with VentureBeat:

Probably the really small beginnings of this idea, the germination of this — when I was working at Lucas, I was allowed to go up to the ranch and read the scripts for the [canceled live-action Star Wars] TV show. It was the most mind-blowing thing I’d ever experienced. I cared about the Emperor. They made the Emperor a sympathetic figure who was wronged by this fucking heartless woman. She’s this hardcore gangster, and she just totally destroyed him as a person. I almost cried while reading this. This is the Emperor, the lightning out of the fingers Emperor. That’s something magical. The writers who worked on that, guys from The Shield and 24, these were excellent writers.

Wow, glad they didn’t make it. Sounds like they would have utterly ruined the Emperor.

So he wants to rule the galaxy why? Because of a broken heart? Jeeesus.

Why do they always do this!? WHY!?!

I’m just here because I’m driving tonight.

I bet a diddled eye Joe to a damned if I know that Palpatine was in his teens when this happened. Sounds like something out of a fanfic.

This was back when George was in charge, though, right? It definitely sounds like his brainchild.

God forbid we have a villain that’s just an evil person; we need all bad guys to have heartbreaking “misunderstood” backstories!

THE SUN RACES THROUGH A BLUE SKY FILLED WITH WHITE CLOUDS.
THE WAYS OF HIS HEART ARE MUCH LIKE THE SUN. SONIC RUNS AND RESTS; THE SUN RISES AND SETS.
DON’T GIVE UP ON THE SUN. DON’T MAKE THE SUN LAUGH AT YOU.

I had someone tell me that Ben Solo should have had a pet that Luke didn’t let him keep and that’s why he turned to evil. I shit you not.

As much as I dislike the idea of a prequel exploring Palpatine’s backstory, I do like the idea of him being shown as a person rather than some devilish sorcerer who came out of nowhere, and had no reason whatsoever for his desires for conquest.

As Tolkien puts it in LOTR: “For nothing was evil in the beginning. Even Sauron was not so.”

“That Darth Vader, man. Sure does love eating Jedi.”

Read the Darth Plagueis novel if you want a more human version of Palpatine. Also one does not need a reason to want to rule the Galaxy as wanting have dominion over people is a reason in of itself. Some people are just controlling.

Still sounds better than his characterization in ROTS.

Not by much; that’s why I prefer the novelization. Even something like Anakin being denied the rank of Jedi Master (which is glossed over in ROTS) is quite profound in ROTS.

Star Wars: Underworld - test footage + Making Of’:-

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_tpTOwXVu8g - from the holonet youtube channel. (10 mins)

The blurb:-

"All rights belong to Stargate Studios and Lucasfilm.

Released test footage from 2010 of the cancelled Star Wars TV show “Underworld,” which was to take place in the lower levels of Coruscant. The series was set after the events of Order 66. The video game “1313” was to be a tie-in of this series. Due to the immense cost of shooting the series, as well as the selling of Lucasfilm to Disney, “Underworld” was delayed and eventually cancelled.

This footage was produced by Stargate Studios (whose VFX resume includes Doctor Who, The Walking Dead, The Orville) in partnership with Lucasfilm. The VFX technology displayed in the making-of portion is Stargate Studios’ impressive real-time rendering Virtual Backlot Live technology.

Oh my crap something actually leaked! Live action Star Wars from the era of George Lucas

After being beaten and battered by prequel hate, I promise not to be that to the next generation.

Exclusive: Ronald D. Moore Gives Details on George Lucas’ Scrapped Live-Action ‘Star Wars’ TV Series’:

https://collider.com/star-wars-underworld-live-action-series-details-ronald-d-moore-george-lucas

A snippet from the article:

“I was one of several, there was a bunch of international writers they assembled… we would gather up at Skywalker Ranch once every six to eight weeks, something like that. And we would break stories together, and right after we’d go off and write some drafts and bring ‘em back, and George and we would sit down and critique them, and then do another draft and break more stories… It was great! It was a ball, it was a lot of fun. It didn’t happen ultimately, we wrote I’d say somewhere in the 40-something, 48 scripts, something like that… the theory was George wanted to write all the scripts and get ‘em all done and then he was gonna go off and figure out how to produce them, because he wanted to do a lot of cutting edge technological stuff with CG and virtual sets and so on. And so he had a whole new thing he wanted to accomplish. And what happened was, you know, we wrote the scripts and then George said ‘OK, this is enough for now, and then I’ll get back to you. I want to look into all the production things.’ And then time went by and like a year or something after that is when he sold Lucasfilm to Disney.”

That sounds very cool, though pours cold water on the claim George was fed up with the fans attitude towards him and the Prequels, or bored of the franchise, just before sellling it to Disney in 2012.

Going on the article and the fact there was so many writer contributing to a project that had stories outlined / scripts for around 40 episodes, and George was spending time trying to figure out the technical side of things.

That’s very Lucas to have the Spinner come in and make unnecessary twirls before landing. They should have gone full knock-off and worked in an Atari logo and a street-crossing signal repeating; "don’t walk, don’t walk, don’t walk…cross now, cross now, cross now". This billboard in the background would have completed the look; https://youtu.be/ZZ17UsZ0DEQ
