I think your colours look fine more natural than some of the other oversaturated caps on here.

I'd say your caps are the best I've seen so far, well done.

I agree with eros, that DrGonzo, TR47, Farsight and the early MeBeJedi versions are all too bright - that is assuming the shots are accurate representations of the video and that no alterations occured when BadAsh took the screen grab.
I've just checked the video on DrGonzo's DVD, and it does appear that the contrast - or white level - was inadvertantly increased when the screen shots were made. (This was actually mentioned earlier in this thread).

Check out this comparison:

correct:

incorrect (as shown in the "official" thread):

I think all of the screenshots except for the Farsight ones were done with a software DVD player. Ash did the Farsight ones in VirtualDubMod. Since he's gone at the moment and we were working together on the thread, I'm in the process of redoing all of the screenshots with VDubMod so we have a level playing field in which to compare.

You're absolutely right about my caps Moth3r. They definitely have a blue cast to them, and this will be corrected on my next set.

Expect some changes to the screenshots thread coming in the next week or so. The format is going to be redone and we will be adding the available shots from some of the new transfers on the block.

Zion, that's great, I look forward to seeing the updated thread.

If I can help in any way, let me know.

If anyone has the Farsight version of ANH and would be willing to make screenshots with VirtualDubMod, please PM me. The new format for the screenshots thread I'm working on will now have 36 shots from ANH. I've already got shots from the Official dvd, Dr. Gonzo, TR47, and Isomix versions. I've also got what's currently available from all the works in progress.

You guys are going to love the new format. Can't wait to get it finished and put up.

Well Zion, it's nice to have more of a variety of screenshots, i.e. dark scenes, light scenes, colourful scenes and scenes with fast motion, and you hard work is appreciated.

However - this is just my personal opinion - 36 may be a bit too excessive. I would prefer to see fewer shots but higher quality jpegs; the pictures have been compressed a little too much for my liking, this is most noticeable in the shots from the official DVD.

Thanks for your input Moth3r. I'd have to say that while I believe you can never have too many screenshots, I can agree with you on the quality issue. I used a jpeg compression setting of 70 for pretty much all of the screenshots, and after looking more closely, I can tell there is way too much artifacting as a result. When I made them, I didn't really look very close and with my monitor set at 1280x1024, those small details are hard to see. I'm going to go back through and redo all the screenshots this week though.

Well I had enough time tonight to redo all of the screenshots, and they're uploading as I speak. All of the finished versions that I have (Official, Dr. Gonzo, Isomix, and TR47) as well as Moth3r's screenshots, were converted from png to jpeg and set at the highest quality setting. The quality is much better and the file size is small enough not to give my site any bandwidth problems. Let me know what you think.

I can't tell any difference in quality between the 470KB lossless PNG and the 150KB highest-quality JPG, so that's good, and if you can host that many shots without any bandwidth problems that's even better.

I have had an idea for something I would like to try; instead of putting all the images in a vertical line on a page, to display just one image and use an HTML form with radio buttons and a Javascript function to switch the image. Also it might aid direct comparison if all the cropped images are resized to their natural aspect ratio (i.e. NTSC 4:3 stretch vertically by 112.5%, 16:9 squash to 84.4%, PAL 4:3 squash to 93.75% etc.) and preloaded so that the change takes place instantly.

Perhaps also for selected shots that contain high detail, an enlarged area of the main image would help to show the differences between each version?

I'm already working on a Javascript-based function so you can select which images to display on each page. The way I envisioned it, there would be a checkbox for each image at the top of the page, and the user could select which images to view. Of course the images would all be preloaded so they'd pop up right away.

I'm not sure if I want to resize the anamorphic ones though. I just feel that they should be presented exactly the same way they come off the disc. Doing an enlargement on detailed shots could be a good idea though.

Yes it would be useful to see the raw source directly off the DVD; I noticed someone had complained in one of the feedback threads that the black bars were not pure black (not sure which version) and a shot directly off the DVD would show this.

Although I still think that cropped and AR-corrected images are the best way to directly compare the overall image quality of versions with differing vertical resolutions.

Javascript function for image selection has been implemented. Let me know what you think.

If I recall correctly, I didn't notice any of the versions not having solid black bars. I cropped them all out because I thought they were distracting.

Does anyone else have an opinion on whether to resize all the images to the same aspect ratio? We could do both, but I'm not willing to host both versions of each image.

I'd rather see them in the correct aspect ratio.
Keep up the good work !

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

This is a rough example of the kind of thing I had envisaged. Have a look and a play (only shots 1 and 6 in there at the moment, and some selections are missing) and let me know what you think. I can host a small number of "unofficial" screenshots if you think it would be useful (as long as geocities doesn't take them down!).

Shots 1 & 6 on Moth3r's site works ok for me (except MBJ's shot 6) - you can certainly tell the difference between the differing versions

Nice work

I've updated my unofficial screenshot comparison page; some of the scenes are now different. I've ditched the "enlarged detail" option for now. All 6 shots from the DrGonzo and TR47 versions are in, 5 out of 6 of mine are in the cropped and resized category.

Zion any idea why the page doesn't work for you? What browser are you using? Is Javascript enabled? I'm only a beginner when it comes to coding scripts, so if anyone wants to take a look at the source, please tell me if I need to do something different for compatibility with other browsers.

Nice Caps... Looks great

Deatail and color seem to be nicely defined.... can we get a NTSC version

anyways ... nice work

I'd vote for having all screen shots at the actual viewing ratio. Its too hard to look at a streched image to try and compare it.

I'm very impressed with the dynamic page Doom9 uses in his latest codec comparison. I would imagine that the image zoom script could be adapted for our purposes.

The screenshots site is back up. Sorry again for the downtime. My site has suddenly become ubber popular because of my Episode III image archive and I had to relocate to another web host. I've got more than twice the bandwidth of my old host, so this shouldn't happen again.

Moth3r, I'm really liking the way your page is set up. I think I'm going to redo mine to something similar. I love that Doom9 example as well. If only I could figure out how they do that zooming....
