Thanks oojason !

I didn't realize that happened. I'm not sure how this works, but I'm trying zippy now...

Like I said before, these are just some MagnoliaFan covers I cobbled together from bits and pieces of stuff including Rikter. I wanted the PT poster covers to match with the OT poster DVD covers so they could sit together like a series.

Aargh... on my screen they're huge! Are they supposed to be like that, um can anyone see them now?
The original Star Wars trilogy: Our cultural history deserves to be preserved and should be available to the public like all great works of art!

You know what would make your cover even better (and I already like it a lot)? Making it available as a PNG file instead of JPG.

JPG is lossy, while PNG is lossless. You've got a lot of very sharp, graphic text on a solid black background, which is exactly the sort of thing PNG is great at compressing. Inevitably with JPG you will get some parts NOT being all the same colour.

PNG compresses things more like ZIP does: you can either compress it a little, which is fast; or compress it more, which is slower. But in both cases, ALL the information is kept.

I'll bet that for your cover, a completely lossless PNG version could actually be smaller than a minimally-compressed JPG version!

Hey gang...

Phibes over at MySpleen.com just gave me a tip to post a link over here.

First off, respect goes to Rikter Blacksun for supplying the star wars dvd cover collection torrent. I have a modified set of covers and labels ready for Dr. Gonzo's "Making Of A Trilogy" dvd #1 and #2. Both the dvd cover inserts and the dvd labels are posted there. Both high-quality .jpg and 600dpi .psd (photoshop) files are available at:

p.s. I've been a die-hard fan since I was 7 back in '77...I might be new to the OT preservation scene, but this is just GREAT!!!!

Chrysophylax - that's a top cover, I'm a big fan of the 4-disc boxes - CHEERS

I did FORGET to mention that it seems you can only provide text link a pic from Zippyimages.com - it won't directly post the pic. Still good for any pic (gif, jpg, jpeg, png, swf format) under 1mb though

Hi,

I finally moved my cover collection to a new and reliable host. I also added a simple upload section, where you can upload your covers (jpg < 2500 Kb) for temporary hosting.
From time to time I will move covers from the upload area to the gallery, if the creator has no objection. Of course I have to take the upload section down if there are too many abuses.

here is the link:

As I get each version of the trilogy I'll be modifying the covers to my liking and I'll go ahead and post them here. Right now I'm downloading a LD to DVD 1997 se version of epIV, the REIVAX digital tape to DVD 1997 se version of epIV, dr. gonzo's pre-se LD to DVD trilogy, and the TR47 version of the trilogy. As I get each I'll modify and post my take on the covers and labels. Thanks for the feedback!

Many months back I saw some awesome covers created by a guy who went by the handle soulflare. He had linked to 2 of the 3 original covers - was working on fixing Empire's cover (an amazing Boba Fett image on it) and was looking into making some minor adjustments based on suggestions from the forum. I haven't seen anything since. Anyone know the guy or how we could get a hold of these covers (all three)?

Yeah. And that Holiday Special disc (not the cover) is the original version I donated to Rikter which he used to make his latest remastered release.

A couple of years ago, I bought (yes on ebay, and yes for a pretty penny), DVD versions of Episodes IV V and VI. They're Region 0, but beyond that, I don't know much about them. Was hoping someone here could tell me a bit about them, if they're fan-made, out-of-US Laserdisc copies, etc...

Here's the cover for A New Hope (It's much nicer than the scan makes it out to be, but I've not tweaked the scanner yet.

Darksir........

It's the "Look" second version. I found it for $7 per disc at the lowest price but that was a few years ago - I've even seen this set hit $300 on eBay!

Star Wars: The Original Trilogy - The Second LOOK Bootleg Version - NUKED*
- DVD and DVDr versions are readily found

http://home.comcast.net/~newmexicoufo/Menu_LOOK_2nd_version.jpg

This was the most common version on eBay auctions in the summer and fall of 2001. These are the original versions of the movies (not the 1997 Special Edition). At one time, I heard reports that these were taken from Asian Video-CD's. In fact, they were taken from the 1995 LaserDisc releases; the Video-CD's were presented in pan-and-scan only and in even poorer video quality than found on these bootlegs. They include decent static menus, with a choice of audio track (several languages), the ability to turn off subtitles, access to chapters, and a featurette of some sort on each disc. As with some of the other bootlegs, the time display on all three discs does not work. Chapter stops are present, but skipping forward during the movie jumps to title 2 (the featurette) rather than the next chapter. This occurred on both my Panasonic A310 and my Toshiba SD-1600. The bit rate appears to stay around 2.0 to 2.5 Mbps in most areas, although it did increase to closer to 5 Mbps near the end of Jedi.

Video quality was somewhat poor when using my Panasonic DVD-A310 to the Mitsubishi TV. In some cases, parts of the image would appear to "twitch" (digital artifacts and "noise"). One case was near the end of Jedi, when the Super Star Destroyer rolled to port and crashed into the Death Star. The smooth outer areas of the upper hull seemed to crawl during that sequence. As with Version A, there was a noticeable deterioration when using component video (SD-1600 to Toshiba 20"); similar blockiness and severe artifacting, although perhaps not as severe as with Version A. Some sections (oddly, those with higher bit rates, which may be a coincidence) avoided the artifacting but displayed severe display problems of other sorts, such as horizontal bars of color scrolling across the screen. I also took a look at one of the discs on a computer DVD drive, and found that the video in that case suffered severe problems with artifacts and some sort of interlacing.

The liner notes for Empire and Jedi are fairly reasonable. A New Hope is a bit more interesting. The front cover includes E-Wing fighters at the bottom (these may not look familiar, because they never appear in the movies; they were introduced as new fighters in the Dark Horse comic book series "Dark Empire", set about four years after the end of Return of the Jedi). The back cover describes the disc as the "complete revised Star Wars trilogy comprising the Special Edition of Star Wars" even though it is not the SE version. The back also includes pictures of Han in carbonite, AT-AT walkers on Hoth, Jabba, and a group of Naboo troopers, even though none of these appear in the movie. The copyright is also listed as 1997 (the year the Special Edition was released) rather than 1977; Empire and Jedi use the years the movies were released, which is more accurate. A New Hope also tosses in the note that the disc is "Sony Playstation 2 compatible," which has also been done on some "real" DVD releases. Lastly, the disc itself for A New Hope says "Special Edition."

- Chapter Selection
- Dolby Digital 5.1 mix

Thankully, I didn't pay QUITE that much.

Rikter, thanks for the info. All in all, I was happy with them, as it let me watch the movies on DVD 3 years before any kind of real DVD release was out. Also, they're still a value, since they're so different than the newly released set.

Thanks again, and I'll stop hijacking the covers thread.

Nice cover! Except for the fact it should say "A New Hope" and not "THE New Hope."

EDIT: It also should not have pics from Episodes 5 and 6 on the back... :/ But it still looks great!

I bought the "Look" second version off of ebay about 3 years ago and they were horrible! The picture was way too soft and the colors looked very washed out. The sound would desynch in parts of ESB and it was entirely desynched on RoTJ. I recently discovered this scene a bit more than a month back...so the discs that I bought for way too much off of ebay have been thrown in the trash.

The TR47 and the ISOMIX trilogy are my favs now. The quality of the discs are outstanding and I love listening to the soundtrack on the ISOMIX set.

My advice is don't bother at all with ebay. You can get everything you need at myspleen and alt.binaries.starwars on usenet. Bravo to everyone that's making this scene as great as it is!

Wipe them out...all of them.
