"spider2.JPG" in Hal's second post shows ghosting in the blue lightsabre, probably a result of temporal noise reduction. Also the horizontal lines in the red are typical of the chroma upsampling error, which could incidate the video is flagged as interlaced when it would be better as progressive. Also what's going on in spider1.JPG, have the fields been blended?

I would guess "no", because I wouldn't expect a DVD recorder to do such a thing. As far as I can tell, he didn't do anything in regards to touching up the video, though I could be wrong (and if he did, it was done on the MPEG, which means recompression.)

I have used a ADVC 300 with the french pal discs and have been fairly pleased with the test output, when I'm back in work on thursday(I don't have the connection for this at home) I will try to upload the sample mpeg so everyone can provide feedback if they wish.

distinctly unimpressed.
how he had the cheek to charge money for this is beyond me. colours and bits of detail may be okay but I think that must rate as one of the worst transfers I've seen.

I have the ADVC-50. The reason you aren't seeing the stair-step issue is that PAL DV is 4:2:0 color space, which is the same as the DVD standard (for PAL & NTSC). NTSC DV is 4:1:1 and that causes the vertical banding seen in the screencaps. I was only speaking of NTSC when I said DV wasn't good enough to capture LD in. Lossless capture is, of course, still gonna be best, but you should be fine with capturing in PAL DV. No issues with it that I know of, but I haven't captured anything higher quality than S-VHS dubs in PAL.

Firstly, my apologies for raking up the past but, purely for review/comparison purposes, does anyone still have copies of this set.
As part of a much wider project on the whole Star Wars DVD topic to help people distinguish between different versions, I believe that this is a valid set to include in the research I am doing.
Firstly because it is almost certain that people have paid good money for this set and I hope to be able to help them identify this set and compare to other versions.
Secondly because it answers the question "Why the hell is XXXXXXXXX spending YYYY hours and £/$ZZZ on a Laser disc to DVD conversion? Why not simply copy a laser disc onto a DVD using a DVD recorder, cos that will do the same job"
If anyone thinks I am mad, I am English so I probably am.........................

This set was bad - REAL bad, I had a friend buy them and send me copies on an extrernal HD then 4 blank DVD's later.... I've deleted them off the HD.
I also was really stoked to get these DVD's but they were even a bigger let down then the Official DVD's so I've even removed them from my list.

Reading the above, I don't think he has them anymore although I will ask him just in case he didn't bin the discs.................

You built your expectations up far too much Rik, you were excited to see the new set, but expected it to offer something the previous ones didn't. It's one of the reasons I'm happy to sit with what I have for the time being. TR-47's may not be fantastic quality but it is certainly watchable quality, and enjoyable. I remember someone on eBay who bought (for far too much) a SW set he was really disappointed in. I told him I'd trade it for TR-47's set (free) - and he was really happy with the quality after that. I was interested in seeing different transfers, especially because this one was not from the DE or Faces LD's and from an older release. This set was bad - REAL bad, I had a friend buy them and send me copies on an extrernal HD then 4 blank DVD's later.... I've deleted them off the HD.
