I agree, there is more a lot more interest in the World Cup here in the US than last time.

I saw during the U.S. vs. Germany rerun tonight that viewership of the World Cup in the U.S. is up 36% since last World Cup, which is really huge, and accounts for us feeling like there's more interest this year.

 Don't use slurs like Enghish.

At least, I assume it's a slur.

So what are everyone's thoughts on penalty kicks deciding a game?  I'm not a fan.  I understand you can't go with sudden death forever, as the players get too exhausted to run at some point.  But what about using corner kicks instead of penalty kicks?

Top penalties from the Costa Ricans tonight - after going down to 10 men for nearly an hour they really showed mentality, technique and nerve in their approach for the pens.

Really hope they beat the Dutch in the quarters.

Frink, imho it's a game of nerve in a penalty shoot-out - your insecurities and frailties put to the limit - a 'do-or-die' type scenario which makes for a great nailbiting climax to a game. I'm a big fan of them - though understand they are not everyone's cup of tea.

Corners are too hard to score from - more chance of injury (stretching to generate that much power that late into a game) - even if the goals were empty.

A little patience goes a long way on this old-school Rebel base. If you are having issues finding what you are looking for, these will be of some help…

why can't you use sudden death until someone scores?   It wouldn't have to go on forever.   Eventually,  someone would get tired and let a goal slip by.

Did you watch Costa Rica today?  They could barely walk.

I hate PKs because they basically come down to luck.  One time the keeper guesses right and they win.

What about Greece?  could they just barely walk?   Eventually,  a goal would get scored.  You want it ended faster?  Pull the goalies.

Greece wasn't down a man.

I don't want it ended faster.  I want it ended more like regular play and less like a gimmick.  I feel the same way in the NHL, which thank goodness doesn't use shootouts in the playoffs.

then why do you seem to be against the use of Sudden Death until there is a winner?  wouldn't that be more like regular play than penalty kicks?  Just what method of breaking a tie would you prefer?

A guy got a red card.  So his team plays a man down, like a power play in hockey but it lasts the rest of the game.

As for your second question, I want it to end more like regular play, but I also understand the realities of making these guys run for four hours.  I prefer some kind of compromise.

then that is Costa Rica's own fault and problem.   They don't want to be down a man and be more tired than than their oppenent?  Dont break the rules and get red carded.  That like an NHL team complaining that the other team scored a goal on a power play.

wouldn't sudden death without goalies be a compromise?  You could play sudden death with goalies for a certain amount of time and if no one scores, pull the goalies.   Sounds like the kind of compromise you are after.

This is a Warb specialty.  You take something and begin arguing something completely unrelated, to the point where I don't even remember why I said the thing in the first place.  Therefore, I will stop trying to remember.

No goalies is no closer to regular play than penalty kicks...you could even argue it's further away.

Something I like the sound of would be to continue play after extended time, sudden death style, but allow unlimited substitutions and re-entry.  Just to keep someone from dying from exhaustion.

not really sure how you can argue it is further away.   My way would involve the whole field and kicking the ball up and down it and would involve all players sands the goalies and involves running up and down said field.  All would be the same as regular play accept no goalies.  Penalty kicks involves just two players the kicker and the goalie, one kick and a very small part of the field.  Quite different than regular play.

Something I like the sound of would be to continue play after extended time, sudden death style, but allow unlimited substitutions and re-entry.  Just to keep someone from dying from exhaustion.

ok, but if a team was limited to 10 players due to a red card, they should still only be allowed 10 players.

What about playing sudden death for say 15-20 minutes, then take a break for the same amount of time that halftime is, then play for another 15-20 and take another halftime break and so on until you have winner?  The breaks should keep the players from getting too tired.
