Look at that weave! All we got was Cilla Black.
Aaron Allston Star Wars EU author has passed away.
Had the thankless task of following Mike Stackpole on the X-wing books and found to be not as good. Though those books were not terrible his fate of the jedi books though were garbage. I still am saddened by his death.

Jim Lange, the first host of the popular game show "The Dating Game," has died at his home in Mill Valley, Calif. He was 81...

Less rail strikes maybe but a good day for fat cat Tories and UKIPers.
The last of a kind, a noble politician, a giant. I was lucky enough to have attended a lecture he gave 10 years ago at a local church arguing against the Iraq war. He had ideas, conviction and empathy, if only the rest of today's political class had all or any of these three.

Two left wing firebrands gone in a week and all we have to show for it is Millipede.
The only British Politician I know of to have been forced out of the Commons only to have a change in the law drafted so he could resign the Lords to return to the Commons.
The Benn Tapes are a fascinating social document.
Maybe they should rename the famous bell at Westminster after him by adding an extra N.
I'd sign that petition.
The good guys have had a bad week.
RIP Bob Crow and Tony Benn.

I don't know these guys and would probably disagree with their politics sometimes, but you and their families have my sympathies, thoughts and prayers.
Here is an extract from this period of the year in Benn's diaries for 2002. Caroline, Tony's wife wasn't ghastly BTW but going by this hairstyle she may have been a martian in disguise.

It seems Fred Phelps is on the edge of death, so I was thinking... if we were all to jump in the air at the same time...

I remember he guest hosted The Tonight Show a lot, a concept that doesn't really exist in talk shows anymore.
Where were you in '77?
Did anyone happen to catch the Wayne Knight car crash hoax?
Maybe in a slow news week that would have made it on the air.
It's sad how fast that crap propagates without anyone casting doubts on it.

Why do we only ever make celebrity death stand out? What about the average person? Why is it that they can't get a mention when they pass. They were important to someone weren't they?
Only people who were important to many, many people, or who are very well known, make the news. If the news reported on every single death, there wouldn't be room for anything else in the news. Additionally, people would stop reading the news because it would be largely irrelevant. With people dying every few seconds around the world, there are just too many deaths to be reported. You can mention people close to you who have died here, but it's meaningless to report every death you hear about. This thread would be hundreds of pages long if everyone did that.
I would add that it IS worthwhile to mention the death of someone who wasn't well known, but perhaps should have been. Or someone who influenced a lot of people without becoming famous themselves.

Many of the people I post a link to here are unknown to some people reading it.
Once in a while I read about someone I've never heard of either.

"One" being the operative word in your post.
Celebrities by their nature mean something to a vast proportion of people. Hopefully something meaningfull like creating a great work of art.
If George Lucas died I'd care... if his brother died, I wouldn't really give a toss (Harsh but the truth) because his life had no meaning for me or anyone else beyond his immediate family. Just as Lucas (Or his possibly imaginary brother) wouldn't give a toss if I died.

I guess I was speaking more as a society, sorry to confuse. Fame, to me, isn't always about how many people who know you. My grandfather was my hero as a child. I was devastated. I did not know until later that he made an impact not just on me but my mother and my aunt & uncle (on my dads side). I know we'd have a list a hundred miles long .... it just bums me out. I guess I was venting more than anything.
Thanks for the responses on the matter.

That was funny.
Always wondered how People magazine thought Abe Vigoda was dead in 1982. Still alive as of this posting of course.
