OK, someone please explain to me how that was a penalty against the Aussie defender. I see him sliding for the ball, but he misses, and the Italian guy takes an exaggerated fall over his body. The guy on ESPN says it was a foul no question, but of course he's Italian so I can't take his word for it.

Don't worry, the English commentator agreed with you guys (not Gary Bloom, but the other guy! Sounds the same to me, though ). It was very disappointing to go out like that, I must say. And to think that just 10 seconds later, we could have been taking penalty shoot-outs...

(10 seconds later you would have had another 30 minutes of extra time to play first before penalties !)

Saw the Italy/Australia highlights on the BBC, and their take was (to paraphrase) that the Italians are cheating bastards, but the Australian defender should have known better than to go to ground and make it easier for the attacker to fall over him.

I had a weird series of dreams this night, in which one of them was that Brazil lost to Ghana.

Brazil are 1/4 to beat Ghana over 90mins - not so generous odds...

I have this odd feeling Ronaldo will play poorly again - but bang in a couple of goals regardless

Halftime in the Ghana/Brazil game and despite being 2-0 down, Ghana are palying pretty well. Ronaldo got to wag his finger again, but that second goal looked offside to me.

Brazilians have played terrible already, Adriano didn't deserve that last goal before half time he was offside.

End of first half, 2-0... Underserved, but Brazil got some luck on their side. An offsided goal, but a penalty kick not called. Ghana has played very well offsensive, but it lacks defense, that offside line is a joke! Let's see what the second half brings us, but I seriously doubt Ghana will surprise us.

The index finger Ronaldo shows, it's a publicity stunt, a beer company's motto, "Brahma the #1". Robinho, for instance, does a V with his fingers to the side for a cell phone company logo every time he scores.

OK, the game is over, 3-0. A deserved victory? I should say yes, Ghana is tactically poor, moves foward fast but cannot score, and the defence is ridiculous. Brazil played poorly and could have done better. The referee really helped Brazil, but Ghana was playing a little rough. Best players for Brazil were:

Dida - did a fantastic defense and played very well. Sadly, the players, unable to move into the game, chose to pass the ball to him and give him the BACK, so he had to resort to kicking foward all the time.

Lúcio - after being the worst player of them all in the 2002 World Cup, he really showed some maturity, easily being the best defense player on this cup. Did what the midfielders refused to do, pratically "scored" the second goal, undeservely credited to Adriano (a player who seems to hate and be hated by the others). That was Brazil's 200th goal in World Cups, by the way.

Ronaldo - seemed to be back on track and actually moved fast. Too bad the other players could not arrange the plays to him. Scored the 15th goal in World Cups, being the #1 scorer of all times, a world record that will not be beaten easily.

Kaká seemed lost. Ronaldinho was pathetic. Adriano deserves no comments at all. Roberto Carlos did the only thing he knows: close his eyes and kick the ball as hard as he can. Notice how he dosen't actually PLAY football, he merely closes his eyes and kick the ball at any directions as hard as he can.

Let's see who'll come victorious at France and Spain, I belive Spain will win...

I would like to see a Brazil/France rematch in which Brazil destroys France and makes them cry.

Could well go that way - great second half in prospect for Spain v France - currently 1-1, slightly contentious penalty, great take from Ribery for the equaliser. Just what the came needed.

Excited neutral

Well - I'm glad Zidane managed to finish it off properly. Quite offended by a player of Henry's quality to show such theatrics for the second goal - been quite a feature of these finals though I suppose !

Haven't seen the game but gutted Spain have gone out - another one of my bets goes out the tourny...

C'mon Brazil!!!

No way, France are a good team and they're not as arogant as the Germans, if anyone deserves a trashing it's Italy and Germany and possibly England.

Definately not impressed with Henry's antics tonight - especially feigning that he had been hit in the face by Puyol when at most he was obstructed with little contact, of which the resulting freekick led to France taking the lead.

great player - but a twunt of a man.

I hope that FIFA takes the same action as they vs Rivaldo in the 2002 WC when he feigned a facial injury after being struck in the leg by a ball.

Hope Brazil beat them convincingly.

They REALLY need to bring instant replay into football. I was watching a hockey game recently and they weren't sure if the puck had crossed the line. A quick look at the video replay revealed it was indeed a goal and the point was given. Good stuff in my opinion.

I've considered adding the video challenge to football the way it's done in american football, so they can review the play, but... the problem is, FIFA must have rules that are playbale in any conditions, and not always the games will be televised and have cameras. Also, it'll take some of the credit of past referee decisions. So, FIFA cannot allow it.

A second referee has been accepted in some cases. Some local tournaments in Brazil were played with two of them on the field.

This is a good point. Football is a grass roots working man any one can play sport.

But isn't every single match of the World Cup televised? Why couldn't they institute instant replay just for the World Cup matches. The qualifying rounds could be played without it. Two referees on the field should be a must for any match as far as I'm concerned.

The rest of the world probably won't agree with me, but there should be some sort of time out system applied as well. The fact that players have to fall on the ground and pretend they're injured just to give their team a chance to catch their breath and get some water is appalling. I can't believe it's considered good strategy to fake an injury. This is the number one reason why I cannot watch this sport and enjoy it.

As far as I am concerned it is not 'good strategy' and it's only since I started watching games in the States on ESPN that I have heard anyone comment on diving and time wasting in a positive way. There should be no time outs, but there should be no time wasting either. They should go the full 90 minutes and give it their all for the entire time.

i really think the italy/ukraine game looks the best out of the group. seems the more interesting match.

Yes, I agree with you, they could have it only on World Cups, but that is how FIFA works. They feel that having a different rule just for the World Cup would make it a different sport. They have all sorts of reasons for not doing the video assist, such as discredit over the referee's judgment, and other stuff like that. The two referee thing is still kinda experimental, but I see it as a possibility.

What? Are you mad, that is the the most predictable one! How about Germany and Argentina? Or Brazil and France? England and Portugal?

I love it that football at all levels is the same sport - and would not like to see rules introduced to differ from the top level to the grassroots - however, that said, at the very top of the sport I'd like to see the likes of FIFA and UEFA grow some balls over the players who cheat by feigning injury, and those who intentionally hurt others.

Would it be so difficult for them to turn around and say that someone who headbutts another player gets an automatic 5 game ban, or elbows someone gets a 3 game ban, kicks someone off the ball, dives when there is not contact, feigns injury to the face or head when there is no contact, shirtpulls, surrounds and/or harass the referee and his offcials and so on...?

We have video referees in Rugby League in Australia as well, and for the most part, it works really well. And to be honest, the only bad decisions I've seen in the last say, 5 years have really been from on-field referees being too stubborn to defer their call. And they do cop criticism when they defer to the video ref too many times, because it usually means they're not following the game well enough...
