'Star Wars: Starfighter' (Upcoming Movie) - General Discussion Thread

Ryan Gosling is joining the Star Wars galaxy in a new film directed by Shawn Levy.

Levy, who recently directed and produced Marvel’s hit Deadpool & Wolverine, made a surprise appearance during The Mandalorian and Grogu panel today, joining Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and chief creative officer Dave Filoni on stage to confirm his project for the live audience at Star Wars Celebration Japan.

One of several theatrical projects still in development from Lucasfilm, including films by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, James Mangold, Taika Waititi and a new trilogy by Simon Kinberg, Levy’s film — Star Wars: Starfighter — will star Gosling and go into production starting this fall.

Set approximately five years after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Gosling will play a brand-new character teased by the actor’s appearance on stage.

Star Wars: Starfighter arrives in theaters on May 28, 2027.

Yeah i wanted to see this when it was Rogue Squadron and Patty was the director.

It would seem unlikely they have 2 projects with such similar concepts, but not impossible.

Probably so, mate. It feels kind of weird; I was quite looking forward to seeing Rogue Squadron - yet have little interest in this. Obviously, if and when information and trailers arrive that’ll likely change… IF.

What’s weird this time is that they claim it will go into production in like 5 months from now. Will they just cobble together art and script ideas that were floating around already? The whole reveal is kind weird in general.

Levy was first reported as being “in talks” to direct a Star Wars movie more than two years ago, and Tropper was hired as the writer back in July.

All we found out from this most recent announcement is the title, the release date, when they plan on starting production, and that it takes place after Episode IX.

You know there were so many people being hired and given movies that I don’t remember his name. I guess that makes more sense. Still, it’s weird to hear they’re actually starting to shoot one of them after so long with nothing. Someone told me recently that TROS is now 6 years ago, and it felt like I aged suddenly.

It’s no longer in development/pre-production. They’ve moved into active production. Filming starts in the fall.

Mia Goth joins the cast

Mia Goth is set to join Ryan Gosling in Shawn Levy’s “Star Wars: Starfighter” feature which will begin filming this Fall in the UK.

Gosling will reportedly play a character that must protect a youngster against evil pursuers. Goth will play one of those pursuers.

Goth is reportedly taking the same role that Mikey Madison had been circling before her deal fell apart over money.

ok so I somehow just found out today that this film is gonna be set after TROS and that alone has me somewhat intrigued even though it is a Shawn Levy film

Cautiously optimistic. Talented director and the casting is quite good.

But we’ve been done this road before. With the sequel trilogy. Casting and directing is not the issue it’s the writing.

I’d say the same about MCU and Kurtzman Star Trek, nobody can write worth a damn anymore, well except for Tony Gilroy on Andor.

I have zero interest in Mando and Grogu but this has piqued my interest a slight amount, I’d say a bit less than Rogue One or the Han Solo a Star Wars story did. But it’s not zero interest, I’m intrigued to see more.

It’s not the hell yeah I want this film, like I felt about Rogue Squadron. Having read those X-wings books for years and loved them all.

It’s not a, should they or shouldn’t they like the Rey Skywalker movie, this will be well within the spinoff territories tiptoeing around the sequel trilogy and its negative impact on Star Wars and the fandom.

I’d say go ahead and do it since The old Star Wars is gone and never coming back, Carrie is gone, and Mark and Harrison are done. What do they have to lose. some fandom menacers who were never going to watch it anyway.

Time to rip off the bandage and move beyond key jangling and member berries. If they dare.
