take a look at this thread.

I learned a lot about the ac3 encoding process etc. my original LD capture from the definitive version always suffered from very quiet sound but the new soundmix has been harmonised properly and the normalisation set correctly as per this thread. worth a look.

Yes I took a look at that guide some time ago. Unfortunately the stuff about measuring the RMS level of your source doesn't take into account fuckwits like me who insert the WAV at -6dB into Acid Pro.

It also doesn't mention that the AC3 file that is output from Acid Pro actually has a WAV header, that will throw off some authoring packages that are expecting to see a standard AC3 header. And I don't agree that "equal loudness contour" should be checked when measuring the RMS value; the A-weighted average sound pressure level you are trying to find is not equal loudness (according to the instructions that came with my Radioshack sound level meter, equal loadness is known as the C-weighted level).

Progress with ROTJ:

Colour settings have been tweaked. Should not be a red shift or washed-out looking colour in this transfer.

Sharpness - and thus halo effect - has been reduced slightly. Halos are still present as that's the nature of analogue video. I tried eliminating the halos altogether, but the result just looked too blurred in my eyes, so I've settled on a compromise.

Audio will be encoded properly this time. (That means louder). Not sure whether I should try to expand the dynamic range in the light of Citizen's listening tests.

I also tried that guide but it doesn't work for me. The audio was very very soft in my tests.

who did the cover art for the u.k. releases because i've always been partial to those covers you posted here. I had an article, magazine somewhere about him years ago think it was star wars insider or galaxy magazine. Think there is an article on starwars.com just do not know his name. I have a set of giant sized star wars cards that have his trilogy of images in the set.

Hey Moth3r ... as you know, I would love to use your version as the basis for a Return of the Jedi Classic Edition. So basically I'm just waiting on you now. =) I won't do it without one of your lovely transfers in my hands.

So hey, whenever you have kind of a rough, crappy pre-release version of the transfer that hasn't been tweaked or synced or menued or fixed or anything ... and it's not ready to release, but it's technically there .....

Let me know. =) I'd love to steal this from you the very SECOND there's something usable there.

I have the huffyuv-compressed raw captures on my hard drive, and most of the audio (apart from the 20th Century Fox fanfare that needs patching in).

I normally burn the rough crappy first-pass encode to DVDRW and scan through to check for audio de-sync, video glitches, etc. - but wouldn't you rather wait for a higher quality multi-pass encode for your classic edition?

Hmm, yeah, a multi-pass encode would probably be needed.

The raw capture files from laserdisc and VHS are now on my hard drive.

I'm now checking the video and audio sources, identifying timing differences. Currently about 3/4 of the way through the film.

Moth3r, IIRC you wrote somewhere (and I can't find it anymore) you would sell your 925 and you wanted to buy a 2950. Why is that? Is the 2950 better? After all the 2950 was replaced by the 925. Not all change is good, but one would think in this case it is.

True, the D925 replaced the 2950 and had additional features such as freeze frame/slow motion on CLV discs and an AC-3 output. But that does not necessarily make it "better".

Although performance of the two units is very similar, it has been suggested that the 2950 might be slightly superior (less noisy) due to a better build quality and a simpler video path. This is yet to be confirmed conclusively, however.

Also consider this: is the X9 better than the player it replaced (the X0)?

I don't kow if the X9 is better than the X0. (probably the X0 is better otherwise there would be an X9 project ). But an 2950 is at least as good as an 925?

I know the X0 weighs twice as much as the X9, is by far the hardest to come by, and preferred by the bulk of videophiles. From what I've heard the 2950 is a bit "better" than the 925. But the guy I bought my 909 from also has a 2950, and he told me the difference in playback quality between those was insignificant.

That's no moon. It's a LaserDisc.

Grinder, in reply to your PM, the French laserdiscs do have the English titlecard and opening crawl (with French subtitles in the lower black bar). The German discs have a German language crawl.

I'm not a laserdisc expert but I believe the X9 was the replacement for the X0, and added a more advanced comb filter and facility to playback both sides of a disc. But from what Laserman said previously, these additions were at the expense of a lower overall build quality.
