[moved from 4K77 to correct topic 4K80]

will there be release of the SPFX: making of the empire strikes back too?

… I’m working on that right now actually. It will be a bonus feature with 4K80.

… That’s after some color correction - it is faded to pink:

… I used a single grade for the whole print. Here’s how that shot looks currently:

Couldn’t find anything more on this after a few of it’s January posts. From back then, it looks like a fair restoration, but it needs to go much further to be a decent one. Anyone have updates on this? or their own better correction suggestions or demos? I gave that faded frame a fairly quick restore to demonstrate what it still needs:

I’m sure he’d appreciate any suggestions.

I usually listen to soundtracks while I work. Right now I’m listening to the Lord of the Rings Soundtrack.

Reel 6 is remarkably clean and complete, so it’s going much more quickly than I had anticipated, based on the other reels.

When I’ve had enough I walk away. On the days where I don’t feel like working on it at all I just don’t. Luckily it’s not my day job so I don’t have that “get it done or you’ll lose your job” pressure. There are also plenty of other things to work on, for example the 16mm SPFX doc, or 4K77 2.0, or even just other aspects of 4K80, such as sourcing the missing frames: Inserts from other prints must be color matched and cleaned and aligned, all of which takes time, but also provides a change, however small that helps keeps things moving but also breaks the monotony.

For anyone who has never worked on a film or animation, frame by frame, working for hours at a time it’s probably difficult to imagine how long it all takes, and how disappointing it can be to count up your frames for the day, whether it’s a dozen or 300 or 1000, and converting that into real time, only to realize that your “wahoo!” moment of “1000 frames!” equates to just 41 seconds of a 2 hour movie. It also means that you end up spending weeks and weeks looking at the stark whiteness of Hoth, or the dunes of Tatooine, or the forests of Endor. That moment when the action shifts to another set can be so refreshing that you can keep going for another hour!

The progress wheels help me a lot. Not only do they keep you informed of my (slow) progress, but it’s psychologically helpful to me - like crossing things to do from a list. It helps me see that there is an end, and every time I can move the wheels I can see I’m getting closer to it. 1% of a reel is about 12 seconds of film or 288 frames, so if I clean less than that in a session, I can’t move the wheels. I like moving the wheels, even by only 1%, so that gives me a goal to hit every time.

THANK YOU!

I always check in about once a month or so and I get a little chill of excitement to see those wheels move.

Well, it seems this place also is as toxic as reddit…

Hmmm. If everywhere you post (OT, Trilogy Forums, Reddit, for example) instantly turns toxic the moment you start typing then perhaps it’s not the people already there who are creating that environment…

Here we are, six pages deep into a thread that’s nearly 3 years old, and there wasn’t any toxicity before you arrived.

Luke: What’s in there?
Yoda: Only what you take with you.

Just sayin’. Food for thought, no?

Not to start any arguments, but if you think someone doesn’t reside with your level of intelligence you shouldn’t call their question stupid to provoke them. Just let them be them and answer politely, as my word of advice.

Sadly 4K80 will not be ready in time for Christmas. The two guys working on Reel 2 had some serious real world issues to deal with over the last few weeks and were unable to finish cleaning that reel yet, but I’m sill hoping we can wrap up this project early in the new year.

Meanwhile, we already have a scan of another Fuji print of ESB which might make for a good v2.0. Previews of this new scan, a grindhouse version of the 4K80 print, and a grindhouse version of Poita’s German print, and several variations on the original ESB Grindhouse scans are available on my site (https://forums.thestarwarstrilogy.com).

Williarob has already gone out of his way provide explanations and information this matter - to a person who had already openly accused TSWT community of being toxic… simply because it has been pointed out the info he was requesting was already available - he just didn’t bother to look for it. Someone who ignores the ‘read first, ask questions later’ or ‘take the time to look around before posting’ mantra of both communities - and is quick with the insults when called on it.

A person who then also states this place is toxic too.

There is also nothing wrong with Williarob pointing out that some people who are quick with accusations of toxicity… could do likely well to take a look at themselves, their own attitudes, and their own posts…

Needless to say ‘Jordy’ is far from the first person to act in such a manner, and won’t be the last. Over the years a truly countless number of people ignore the OP of a thread, the links provided, or even the project page provided with update information on it, those who don’t take a few minutes to look around to see if their question has already been asked and answered, or even a cursory look at the discussion thread itself… grows. Yet the same old excuses, defensiveness and accusations remain… when questioned themselves, are told how to look for information, or even told where to look for the answers they seek, or are actually given the information.

If Williarob receives similar messages in PMs as the mods do… it is just the tip of the iceberg. Meanwhile Williarob (along with many others engaged in undertaking various fan projects) continues to take the time and effort to patiently provide answers to oft-repeated questions… where the information has already been clearly provided, or even signposted.

That’s enough from me and my two-penneth. Let’s get back to discussing 4K80.

It may help to refer to the documentary you are actually requesting (is it the ‘SP FX’?) - and to also add a simple ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ too - instead of seemingly issuing a demand.

👍

Just thought I would let everyone know that over on 4K80’s page at thestarwarstrilogy.com the progress bar for reel 2 (the only remaining reel yet to be fully restored) has already been updated several times just within the last couple weeks.

It was sitting at 62% for a good long while, but now is almost at 70%!

Encouraging news. Anyone awaiting this release should head on over and send them a donation if they haven’t already. Every dollar helps.

The other day it was at 80%.

Now 90%!!

What is going on!?!

So excited for this release. Keep up the great work gents.

I’m really happy to see this.

But we can’t turn back. Fear is their greatest defense. I doubt if the actual security there is any greater than it was on Aquilae or Sullust. And what there is is most likely directed towards a large-scale assault.

Well, not quite: it’s still just a beta version for now.

But still, fantastic news! In just a few weeks, we’ll have professional-quality 4K restorations of the entire theatrical OT, entirely because of the hard work of a few fans. That’s amazing to think about.

Is this just the clean up, or is this the actual scanning which is complete?

Omigoodness. Thank the Maker!

If this is just a beta version, then how long till the actual restoration is complete?

Less than 12 parsecs.
