The 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special - a general discussion thread — Page 3

All the pre-ESB Star Wars toys were copyrighted to Fox as well.

A snag might be if Lucas put a HS clause in the Disney deal. There is also the possibility of having to license the Jefferson Starship song. Disney might not want to pony up for it. That kind of thing has plagued The Muppet Show, which has yet to have all five seasons released on video.
There could also be actor residuals involved. Nobody was thinking of home video when the contracts were signed.

I dunno about the special but the Strips and other things of that era were also copyrighted to Black Falcon which was the Lucasfilm licensing division at the time.

Yeah, I recall the Black Falcon name appearing on bed linens and towels and wondering what it was. IIRC, the Marvel comic was copyrighted to Fox in the early days.

With no Star Wars movie this holiday season, Disney missed a great opportunity to make a new Holiday Special.

I don’t know. Such an endeavor could end up looking like something out of Scrooged. 😛

They could do it. Just go without canonical story addition and more variety show and celebrity appearances. Get the 501st to deliver some toys to hospitals.

I was a big fan in 1977, saw SW at least 5 times in the theater.
But I can’t remember if I saw the Holiday Special (when it aired) or not.

Memory loss after the first viewing of the HS is quite common. 😛

Part of THE STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL Is Coming to Disney+’:-

https://nerdist.com/article/star-wars-holiday-special-boba-fett-on-disney-plus-ewoks-genndy-tartakovsky

'Lucasfilm gave the world a gift in 1978: The Star Wars Holiday Special. The oft-maligned TV special has some, shall we say, rough spots, but also marks Boba Fett‘s first ever appearance. He showed up in a truly wild animated short in the special before he returned in The Empire Strikes Back. And while Lucasfilm has largely shoved The Star Wars Holiday Special into a trunk, never to see the light of day again, they are releasing the Boba Fett animated segment on Disney+ in April alongside more classic Star Wars. I never thought I’d see the day.

The Story of the Faithful Wookiee,” as the short is titled, airs as a cartoon in-universe that Chewbacca’s son Lumpawarrump watches. A mysterious character (Boba Fett) befriends Luke Skywalker and his friends and then goes on a mission with Chewbacca. There’s a cursed Talisman, a sleeping virus, and antics. And the animation quality is pretty solid, especially for the time. We’re excited that more people will get to see this quality entry in Boba Fett history.’

I have to wonder if they are going to now assert their copyright on the cartoon to squash versions of the HS that can be seen online.

This makes me think if there is ever a release of the unaltered theatrical versions of the original trilogy, it will be streaming on Disney+ only and not on a disc.

You could well be right on that, mate. Same for the 1997 Special Edition version too (of which pristine prints are already in existence - yet remains unreleased).

When someone highlighted the image seemed to be of a higher quality than is usually out there - ‘Say…that’s an AWFULLY CLEAR screengrab…’

Pablo responded with - 'I have my sources. 😉

If Pablo is inferring there is a ‘high quality’ version of the Holiday Special in their archives… then hopefully one day we’ll see it up on Disney+. After all, there is not much point in such a version being kept in there and remaining unseen by the fans…

(not forgetting the many quality preservation projects of it on here, of course!)

Are we sure that’s higher quality than anything we have, or is he just implying that he got a fan project?

Even so, digitizing analog video masters is just standard archival policy at this point. Analog video doesn’t exactly have the shelf life of safety film.

As the SWHS was more Fox than Lucasfilm, where would the master tapes have been all these years before Disney bought Fox? Lucas wanted to run a bulk tape eraser over the thing after all. 😉

StarWars•com plugging ‘the first-ever official Life Day merchandise’ for the 1978 Holiday Special…

It’s officially Life Day with the new ShopDisney Collection’:-

Celebrate the Wookiee Holiday with Chewbacca in a red robe, glowing orbs, and more!

www.starwars.com/news/life-day-shopdisney-collection

Seems a little weird to be selling merchandise for something that hasn’t had an official release since it’s initial TV airing some 43 years ago.

Hopefully we’ll soon see an actual official release for the Holiday Special (I think?!) - even if it was to likely happen it’d probably be as a part of the ‘Vintage Collection’ up on Disney+.

Haven’t there been a few Boba Fett figures in Holiday Special colors in the past several years though? Still holding out hope for a Bea Arthur figure. 😉

Hello … what have we here?

“Heroes come in all sizes, and you don’t have to be a giant hero. You can be a very small hero. It’s just as important to understand that accepting self-responsibility for the things you do, having good manners, caring about other people - these are heroic acts. Everybody has the choice of being a hero or not being a hero every day of their lives.” - George Lucas

We already have a master tape copy, I don’t think it gets much higher quality than that.
Your average Joe is probably used to seeing 7th generation copies.
