Kylo said he did it on purpose to test Rey, and also wouldn’t he have known about the second transport? I don’t think Kylo ever assumed he actually killed Chewie.

Author

I don’t think Kylo would have known Chewie was on the ship though. When Chewie was being (stupidly) captured, Kylo was 40,000 miles away, (stupidly) trying to get a running start to (stupidly) try to mow Rey down (but not really! …Stupidly.) So in my mind, Kylo crashed, strolled up cool as a cucumber, saw that Rey was trying to hold onto a transport ship, and thought, “Oho, not so fast, Rey! You’ve got to be stronger than that if you’re going to help me murder your evil zombie grandfather clone!”

“Oh wait f*ck did they just say Chewie was on that ship?? Oh no! My quest to find more power has resulted in my killing one of my oldest friends. Perhaps the Dark Side is…wrong???”

I dunno, I’m just spitballing here. This whole sequence is one of the least thought out in the whole story, which is a pretty high bar in this film.

Kylo still has a grudge against Chewie for blasting him. Yeah, it was warranted because he had just killed his best friend in the galaxy, but Kylo probably doesn’t see it that way. In his twisted thinking, he probably believes that Chewie has abandoned him like everyone else and hates his Wookie guts for it.

This could have been expanded on with the deleted scene involving Chewie’s torture. IMO, what would have been a perfect reveal in that scene would be if it’s shown that Chewbacca was aiming at his head for the killing blow after he killed Han but changed his mind at the last second. That would have been a stepping stone toward Ben’s forgiveness and his ultimate redemption.

Does anyone know whether or not the script for the movie is online? Not the Duel of the Fates script by Colin Trevorrow. If it’s online, we might be able to see how the deleted scenes played out.

Also, I am currently busy wrapping up Book 5 of my Harry Potter project, but I want to ask everyone if you would like me to contact Speaking of AI about his trained model of Adam Driver. I will also start searching for resources of Sebastian Shaw.

The name’s Lawson. Noah Lawson.

It’s also possible Kylo didn’t anticipate that she would blow up the ship.

Also, if Kylo Ren was trying to show Rey the power of the dark side, having her almost kill her friend with that power would probably have the opposite effect. At this point of the film, it probably would’ve made more sense for the story to demonstrate to Rey how the dark side can help her accomplish her goals. But can’t really do anything about that.

An easy patch for this would have been a single line from Kylo: “I can teach you to control your powers.”

Just cross-posting this stuff from my edit’s thread should anyone find it useful:

No more dagger screams

After it was mentioned here I’ve been trying for a while to remove the connection of Rey’s psychometry with the murder of her parents, and more strongly to the Death Star and the Sith whisper MacGuffin. I’ve achieved this by both editing around the “no” screams in the cave, and adding a vision of the Death Star in Ren’s quarters on Kijimi.

A) No “no” screams in the Pasaana cave: https://streamable.com/5r05z9

B) Death Star vision on Kijimi: https://streamable.com/qiaazu

I’d actually already removed the two instances of the dagger triggering memories of her parents as well as the idea that it was their murder weapon. It is more straightforward now since we need the dagger’s gimmick to be that it will lead to the… other plot device, via the Sith whispers.

And it somehow doesn’t seem right to have Kylo mutter about Chewie at the transport. At the very least it would lack the ability to contrive the sort of beat such a line of dialogue would require in a movie like this.

I don’t mind the screams. Maybe Rey having a strong personal connection with the past evil of the dagger helps better sell her ability to detect it and navigate with it.

It is more straightforward without the screams, though.

I really like not having the screams in the cave. The added whispers convey the same sense that the dagger is powerful, ancient, and evil; and not having the screams helps it to feel more mystical. Really nice job cleaning that up!

The vision…I’m less certain about. I still love the idea, and it’s something I’ve been meaning to work on myself; but something about it feels too subtle here, I think. I’m worried it doesn’t quite jive with the hyper-agressive way J.J. films his vision sequences in the other parts of the movie, so instead it feels like a nice, tranquil shot of the Death Star. That said, if it matches the tone you’re looking for in your edit, that’s what matters. I do think the concept is effective, and it’s great to see an example of it!

That was a concern, definitely. I can see how it would play out if I were filming the scene myself; but I wasn’t sure if we had enough at this point to have it land effectively.

In other news, I’ve been playing with a new reading of the word “end” for the Leia training. I’m at the point now where I need a clean set of ears to listen to it. Let me know how it sounds, and if you think this version works any better than the other!

Thanks! It does fit more or less with the rest of the edit, I’ve added other visions and insert shots around the place (see here) that gesture at this kind of style rather than the more frenetic one JJ is fond of. I will definitely be tweaking this a lot more, though.

Version B sounds the most passable for me. Was iffy on previous versions, but version B seems to be about as good as it’s gonna get here. The audio doesn’t awkwardly jolt as much this time. It now sounds like he’s mid-sentence shifting his tone to be a bit more stoic. With this version, only now is the edit unnoticeable for new viewers, imo. When before, I feel like it was still noticeable, honestly.

Oh I see. That’s awesome! And yeah, the other vision will fit in perfectly now.

So, Sherlock and Hal, are you satisfied with the “im a jedi” and the “end of her jedi path” bits? I think the overall reaction was fairly positive, what about trying to put on for the new version and doing some test screenings? Nothing better than an unsuspectfull clean ear.

I feel like both of those work well enough now to no longer be a question of whether to use them or not. I really don’t feel like it would have stood out to anybody who didn’t know that it was being messed with.

i dont mean to discredit people’s work nor mean to be rude, but to be honest, I didn’t know it was being messed with unless someone told me so, and as someone who briefly skims the threads, it went right past me. I feel that there’s too much over attention to the most minute of minutia that I think we are overthinking alot of things. However, I agree that nuance is absolutely critical and i suppose it takes a 100 tries but when one finds something that truly sticks, it sticks well.

I prefer the new version myself. Option B by a longshot. At this point the only way I can tell it’s been modified is if I have my speakers right next to my ear.

As much as I’d like for everything in these edits to feel smooth for people who have seen these movies many times, the only sensible target is a hypothetical audience of moviegoers in a parallel universe where this was being projected overhead on opening night.

Yeah, but the main goal here is to finish the project then get drunk and/or high enough to forget it, watch it again and being blow away.
Jokes aside, officially putting it on things waiting on other or things done? 😄

Since we’re still waiting on the last VFX shots anyway, I’ll probably try to smooth out that fade into “end” a bit more. But now I know to focus my efforts on Version B. Thanks for the feedback, everyone! I’m glad to know it’s so close!

DanielDubb and I are still tackling the final “I… am a Jedi” line, so there might be more to come on that one.

Also, I’ve still got to finish the Jedi Voices scene. I just need to find the time to do it, but thanks to covid I’ve been really busy at work, and my downtime is currently spent finishing an unrelated edit for my son to watch. That’s almost finished, though, and then the Jedi Voices scene is next cab off the rank.

If you’re still working on it, my thought on it is that the sound is a bit muffled compared to the rest of the line. I only say this because it may be a bit unclear to a first-time viewer.
