I just thought “A Skywalker” could be an interesting answer, because you could interpret it as Rey taking the last name, or that she is creating a new order called “Skywalker” and she is claiming that title. Maybe that would seem contradictory or redundant after Rey saying “I’m a Jedi” at the climax.

That’s something I’ve been very strongly considering for the end of my edit as what Rey & Ben call their school of Force students.

A possibility is Rey would be on Tatooine at the Skywalker homestead and like the scene above (without the ghosts; Rey is probably looking at Leia about to land on Ach-to where Ben had trashed his TIE fighter after mindwiping the First Order command staff and defecting), the old woman comes up and says the place is empty & no one stays because of raiders. Rey says she’s here to help. The old woman asks who she is, and Rey answers that she’s a skywalker.

It’s a cool word, it kinda works as a description of a Jedi-type wandering monk, and it honors the whole Skywalker lineage without having Rey kinda presumptuously adopt herself into it.

“That’s not how the Force works!”

Very random thought, and one I believe I’ve suggested before:

In the movie’s final scene, I think it would be interesting to create a new shot of Tatooine’s yellow sun coming over the horizon, and placing that at some point near when Rey activates her yellow lightsaber. I recall a lot of people wondering why they went with yellow for Rey’s saber color, and I think by placing the imagery of the yellow sun rising near Rey displaying her yellow lightsaber could help make the symbolism clearer. And to clarify, I think the yellow is meant represent a bright, and hopeful future, as well as Rey representing a new dawn for the Jedi.

Also, I don’t really know if I would prefer it or not, but I would be interested to see if we could change the final interaction between her and the old lady to go like this:

WOMAN: There’s been no one for so long. Who are you?

Rey looks over at the ghosts of the Skywalkers, then looks back.

REY: A Skywalker.

Or, you could still have her say “Rey Skywalker” and cut the old lady interrogating Rey and asking for her first name, last, date of birth, etc… haha. I like all of this.

If doable, I’d like it too.

For one that fully embraces Rey Skywalker. I really like “a skywalker” because it gives an even split between Rey choosing Rey skywalker and giving the audience the idea of the moniker of skywalker

Now where’s Sherlock potter to do an audio mock up? (I apologize if I didn’t recall other very skilled editor, he’s the first person to pop in my head for audio mock ups as of recent based on my forum checking habits). I think the hardest part is the lip movement because saying “Rey” versus “a” gives a different lip movement.

REY: A Skywalker.

I really like this. Feels much more natural, if the audio and visuals would allow for the lipsync.

I’m gonna be the contrarian and say that I’m not super keen with “A Skywalker”. Honestly, I never really had a problem with her taking on the Skywalker name in a familial sense.

Seconded. Though I prefer Rey Nobody… I don’t mind Rey Skywalker. It could’ve been built up to in a less clumsy way, but on paper it works.

I don’t have a problem with the concept of her taking the name, but I always thought the “Rey who?” was awkward. Such an on-the-nose setup, almost like a knock-knock joke where the punchline is the title of the movie.

Personally I’ve never jived with the idea of renaming Jedi to Skywalkers (especially after the movie has such a focus on Rey becoming a Jedi - “she’ll never be a Jedi”, “I’m (all the / a) Jedi”, “confronting fear is the destiny of a Jedi”, etc.), but I do very much prefer that scene cut down such that the old woman only asks one question and Rey responds with Rey Skywalker. I think a lot of the groaning that that scene induces just comes from how contrived the “Rey whO?!???!” part of the exchange is.

I’m of the opinion that the alternate take solves most of the cringing in the scene.

Author

It is a weirdly direct way of asking the question. “Rey whOOo?” It’s aggressive.

That’s why I’d like to remind everyone that we do have the right audio in the right tone to have her snappishly answer “None of your business, that’s who!”

Eh, it’s just a nosy old lady who probably remembers when Owen and Beru lived there.

EDIT: It’s also worth noting that having her ask “Rey who?” is meant to mirror the Aki Aki girl from earlier in the film (the one that asks for her family name).

I’ve spent so much time now in the version of this film where I’ve cut out most of Terrio’s “characters saying things that other characters have already said” style of trying to imbue writing with meaning and import that I forget sometimes just how awful the script is lmao.

So I heard this guy is the one who came up with the whole “Rey killed her parents” idea. Has anyone succeeded in pulling that off with the currently available material? 🤔

That’s a brilliant way of explaining it; just because the Old Lady™ is referencing what the kid said, it doesn’t make either line any less awkward or cliché. What other instances of referencing earlier lines have you found? There’s that time where 3PO’s “emotional” farewell speech is just copied from a line Poe says earlier, the whole thing with Finn having “a feeling” just like Jannah had “a feeling,” and Poe’s motivational speech to the Resistance (“The First Order wins by making us think we’re alone. We’re not alone.”) just aping off of what Keri Russell told him earlier. (There’s also Keri Russell’s “There’s more of us” followed by Lando’s same line, but to Terrio’s credit, that feels more like an attempt at setup than self-plagerism.)

I was thinking about how Krausfadr said that hopefully people would continue looking at ways to move Palpatine’s reveal to later in the movie, and I just thought of something: What if it were moved to the midpoint, right after Rey escapes the Star Destroyer? It would go something like:

  • Kylo feels he’s failed at getting Rey to team up with him against Palpatine
  • Kylo goes to Exegol to try and kill Palpatine by himself
  • Palpatine reveals he’s dying (someone already altered that scene to have him say “I don’t have long”) and offers to make Kylo the new Emperor
  • Kylo is told to kill Rey
  • The next time we see him he’s on Endor, seemingly ready to do just that (we’d need to remove some dialogue, but that shouldn’t be hard because a lot of what he says in that scene is spoken off-screen anyway).

You’ve got to ask yourself one question: “Am I making Carrie Fisher’s ghost proud?”
Well, are ya, punk?

That actually sounds like it could work, I would love to see someone attempt it.

How does Kylo get to Exegol in this scenario? The theatrical is already relying on the audience not minding that, at some point between movies, Kylo figured out that Palpatine is on Exegol, and that the only way to get there is with a wayfinder, and that Vader had a wayfinder on Mustafar. It would be weird to move this scene to the middle of the movie (he somehow finds out where the wayfinder is, goes to Mustafar and grabs it, zooms over to Exegol, makes a deal with Palpatine, and still gets to the Death Star at the same time Rey does?), but it would also be a bit odd if he found it at the beginning and then just didn’t use it.

You also might need a bit more… something, to sell the urgency and legitimacy of the Resistance’s quest and Rey’s inner conflict. If we haven’t seen Palpatine in the flesh yet, the first mention of him in the movie will be Poe’s “somehow, he returned,” which now becomes even more laughable. The audience would be thinking, “What? They’re risking everything because they heard some guy say Palpatine has ‘returned?’ They know Palpatine was in the Death Star when it blew up, right?”

I guess I was imagining opening the movie more in line with the book - intercutting Rey’s training with Kylo’s fight on Mustafar - but then ending with him finding the wayfinder, implying that he went to Exegol off-screen. I guess that would be pretty hard to communicate, though.

Just cross-posting this stuff from my edit’s thread:

No more dagger screams

I’ve been trying for a while to remove the connection of Rey’s psychometry with the murder of her parents, and more strongly to the Death Star and the Sith whisper MacGuffin from TRoS: Ascendant. I’ve achieved this by both editing around the “no” screams in the cave, and adding a vision of the Death Star in Ren’s quarters on Kijimi.

B) Death Star vision on Kijimi: https://streamable.com/qiaazu

Ed, I really like that idea, man. I would advise maybe hashing It out some more just to make sure there aren’t anymore cracks and maybe attempting it (or having someone attempt it)

Why wouldn’t Palpatine want to do the spirit ritual with Ben if he’s dying?
