Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Redux Ideas thread — Page 170

Considering those facts, and the fact that the entire Sequel Trilogy takes place over the course of only a year, makes me feel like if you made a trilogy edit where most of the action takes place beyond New Republic territory, and the Republic is never destroyed, it wouldn’t really impact the films that much.

Yes, we see the Republic planets blow up, but we don’t ever see how that effects Republic worlds. The whole trilogy could take place within the First Order’s small territory, with the Resistance being a covert operation within its borders. No Starkiller, no Snoke even. Just a radical Imperial remnant who use the heir of Vader as a figurehead. The hidden Imperial fleet could be their key to conquering the Republic, but then it’s the Republic fleet that kicks their butts at the end of the movie. Sure, we would never really get to visit the New Republic, but at least it wouldn’t be conquered and then apparently restored off-screen.

It’s just kinda nuts that they made a Sequel Trilogy and never really gave us a good look at the actual New Republic. But then again, if you keep in mind the trilogy only consists of a single year of galactic history, then it might make more sense if the First Order’s scale and off-screen blitzkrieg of the galaxy is downplayed, or entirely removed. Maybe less dramatic, but it might make the ST feel less like a reset.

That’s such a sensible approach, Rogue. This isn’t a huge criticism but the sequel trilogy did a lot to bring back the aesthetic, character tropes, and villains of the OT, but it didn’t do much to make their return impactful to the Galaxy at large. It’s still an emotionally resonant story for the featured characters, but there’s no reason it needs to be a galaxywide story this time.

FWIW my edit removes any planet killing weapons or mentions of the New Republic outside the title crawl and it really doesn’t. If anything I found by narrowing the scope of the narrative in this way, it helps the story significantly!

Shower thought I just had:

I know plenty of people have tried to salvage the “I am Iron Man” one liner by trimming it into various forms, but has anyone tried dubbing it over with something else?

I imagine that by muting the audio and just looking at the lip movements, there’d have to be other things which could a) match convincingly, and b) be a better pair of lines.

I have no idea what they’d say instead, or whether you’d use audio of the actors or just find good soundalikes of Rey and Palpatine, but it’s worth at least a cursory investigation, right? Even just to rule it out?

On that topic, if someone does manage to find a good Rey soundalike, would it work to replace “Lightspeed skip” with “Lightspeed ram” to refer to Poe breaking through the ice-wall (for an edit that removes the lightspeeed-skipping sequence)?

You’ve got to ask yourself one question: “Am I making Carrie Fisher’s ghost proud?”
Well, are ya, punk?

I tried throwing in “I’m no one” over the shot of her getting the saber. People didn’t like it, although that could be partially due to a rough audio mix.

iirc, I liked it.

So Star Wars Biomes came out on Disney+ today and has a nice landscape shot of Mustafar. Any chance something like that could be used for an establishing shot to help slow down the beginning of the movie a little?

The best way to “slow down” the beginning of the movie is to get rid of Mustafar entirely and just skip to the nebula jump-in. The movie feels slower and more evenly paced while simultaneously starting the actual plot faster. It’s also much more in keeping with tradition (such as it is) with Star Wars openings.

I’ve been working on a number of new scenes for the past few months to slow down the pace at the start I.e. Kylo finding the wayfinder in Vaders castle, Biomes was like the perfect gift from the Gods. Exactly what I needed. So good!

Also, to carry over discussion from the Ascendant thread: I like Rey using a tiny burst of Force Lightning when she shoves Finn, and if anyone does the VFX, I’d edit it into a personal cut of the movie if I ever make one.

Yeah, I’ll try to find it later. Should be in my thread although that’s probably buried at this point.

Count me in with the people who wants to see this idea come to fruition for their own edit of TROS.

It’s a bit of a bummer that it won’t happen for Ascendant though. 😕

Here’s an idea: Alternate Ascension. Someone should take all the ideas that were considered but ultimately decided against for Ascendant - even ones you don’t necessarily agree with - and put all of those into an edit. A mirror image of Ascendant, if you will. There’s certainly no shortage of ideas to implement.

Replace Han with Leia’s Force Ghost and we can call it Alternate Ascension; Free Solo.

I’ll be here all week.

I did clean it up somewhat since this but not by that much (my skills are only so good when it comes to audio).

That’s basically what poppasketti did with TLJ Rekindled. And arguable his edit ended up more popular than Hal’s.

I considered something like that once. Removing some of Hal’s edits I don’t really agree with, while preserving some of the ones I do like and adding in my own ideas (not that I’m a super-duper God-tier perfect editor).

There are a TON of edits all over fanedit.org (and here - the two spots are basically like two rooms on the same house at this point) that only exist because Hal’s edits are the base 😃

Sometimes I feel like a relic about this stuff anymore. My prequel edits didn’t do all that much that was truly original, just ‘Brothers Grimm’ing a textual lineage of edits that came before.

It’s an ongoing conversation and process.

There will come a point when I will say, “I will fan edit no longer,” and call after you, “Save the [film in question], save the dream.”

Finally watched through the brief Biomes when I had a break today and I was thinking of how some other shots could be potentially used for fan edits. One shot in particular I was thinking about was the Falcon lifting off from Ahch-To and flying towards the sunrise/sunset.

Since it is daytime in that shot, I don’t think you could really use it for TLJ. But, I did have another idea for it.

Imagine an alternate ending where Ben lives, but has been living in exile on Ahch-To. Perhaps the final scene could take place some time in the future, and Rey has come to finally take him off-world. Like he’s served his sentence.

Not exactly sure what footage could be used/reused to make it work, but I think the last shot being the Falcon taking off and flying towards the sunset would be another cool way to end the Saga. But if you wanted to do a Ben Lives ending, it would definitely be easier to just have him meet Rey on Tatooine in the current ending. Still would require a bit of FX work, but not as much, I would imagine. I’ve actually made proof-of-concept images for such an ending. I know making the actual shots would be obviously more difficult, but they feel don’t feel very artificial IMO.

The trouble with having Ben live at the end would be changing what he’s wearing. I’m going down the Rey in back while morning Luke and Leia rought and eventually filming a new actor and deep faking Ben for a new ending but we’ll have to get out of lockdown first. 😕 I’d be interested to hear your ideas for this…

I wonder if you could get away with Ben still wearing his “Kylo Ren” robes, but you make them gray instead of black. I feel like you could accomplish that with some color grading and masking.

Or, maybe you could use CGI, or film a body double wearing a big poncho, sort of like what Luke briefly wears in ANH, essentially covering Ben’s entire body. You could just put his head on top, if you could replicate his movements well enough. Even better if he’s just standing in the shot, and not walking.

The way I envision it, I think you would only need to use VFX in one shot to show that he’s wearing a new outfit. The rest of his shots would just be him in silhouette. I’ll share those images.

Author
Time

Here are the concept images. I actually made these back in March 2020, but creating the actual shots were a bit beyond my abilities. The idea would be that Rey stands up and reacts to Ben approaching her, rather than the old lady.
