Actually, in this forum’s vernacular, GOUT (George’s Original Unaltered Trilogy) explicitly refers to only the 2006 DVD release. Anything pre-Special Edition would be OUT (Original Unaltered Trilogy).

One day we will have properly restored versions of the Original Unaltered Trilogy (OUT); or 1977, 1980, 1983 Theatrical released versions (Like 4K77,4K80 and 4K83); including Prequels. So that future generations can enjoy these historic films that changed cinema forever.

Also, having been out of the loop for a while, I’m wondering, if there are any noteworthy preservation projects that I might have missed in the last year or so - maybe even WIP releases and stuff like that.

Just want to bump this 😉

There are a few projects listed up in the ‘2020 section’ of the An OriginalTrilogy.com Timeline thread mate - including some fan edits too 👍

Yes: see the first post in this thread for a link to HanDuet’s TUIG. Among the options for download are NTSC DVD5 versions of all three OT films. On a PC, ImgBurn (freeware) is probably the easiest way to burn the projects to DVD.

Hey Harmy! For Despecialized 3.0, are you doing your restoration work in way that’s limited to Rec.709, or are you doing it in a wide color gamut / logrithmic color space? If you happen to be working in WCG/Log, then maybe we could work together to do an HDR/Dolby Vision release sometime in the future, if you’re interested. 🙂

I export everything in rec709. To be honest, all this hdr stuff is giving me headaches. Not just for Star Wars but at work too - there, at least, we have a dedicated support team for this stuff. 😀

For what it’s worth, it’s possible use Rec. 2020 without any HDR. There is a benefit to it, albeit small. Some commercial discs do it, and (UHD) player compatibility is not an issue.

The downside is that you’ll be inviting questions like “Why didn’t you do HDR?”. But to be honest, those questions are going to happen regardless!

Hi, question for ya! I last watched the Despecialized editions around December 2015, before The Force Awakens came out. I recall Return of the Jedi had a “workprint” in progress version of Despecialized or something like that. I haven’t been able to find a wiki or list of the version releases of Despecialized and when they came out. So my question, is there something like that? How many releases of Despecialized for the trilogy have there been since late 2015, and any info on those updates? Thanks.

Also, for example, has the color changed in A New Hope at all since the 2015’s version of Despecialized? That was the only thing that wasn’t 100% to my taste, maybe combined with the DNR of the blu-ray, skin tone just didn’t feel “natural” to me. Though I know it has the technicolor look etc. Though now we have the 4k77 version for that too which is nice. All in all, Despecialized is terrific for me, just checking back in. 3.0 sounds great, I read somewhere that the new HD version it’s based on removes some of the old DNR and has better color than the earlier blu-rays etc.

Regarding color, the latest version of Despecialized is version 2.7, which I believe was released in 2016. Its main goal was to tone down some of the extreme Tech IB greenish yellow, so it might be right up your alley.

Current versions are: SW2.7, ESB2.0, ROTJ2.5. ESB and ROTJ are both very solid. SW sadly still has some pretty big issues, but Despecialized is still my go-to version.

It’s been a while, but after having reviewed the earlier shots, I’ve updated the indoor shots to have better color dynamics and separation (outdoor shots will follow):

(etc.)

I’ve looked around (but not all 600+ pages) and couldn’t find the source pictures to compare your work before (pre-LUT) and after (latest LUT). Did you ever post them here? If not, would you post shots of what you’ve worked from?

UPDATED: Never mind – I did several “word searches” and nothing additional showed up. (Thanks to anyone who looked and also found nothing.)

Would also prefer to see in Rec. 2020, any chance of a small sample of both for comparison?

Or the better route, in my opinion, would be to perform all restoration and grading work within Rec.2020 ST2084, but with an output transform set to Rec.709 Gamma 2.4. So effectively, it would be as if you were making the restoration in Rec.709; however, all of the hard restoration work would be preserved in a larger container, thus future-proofing the restoration.

In other words, you’d still view everything in Rec.709, and export everything in Rec.709, and release it in Rec.709. But internally, you can always disable the output transform and you’d have all the extra detail there. That way, in 5+ years from now when HDR grading becomes much simpler, none of the restoration work has to be redone. The only thing it will need is a new color grade. 🙂

And you can do all this with a standard SDR monitor.
