When I eventually play the MGS games, I’m thinking of playing them this way.

METAL GEAR SOLID - (SNES CLASSIC - Emulation) OR PC
METAL GEAR SOLID 2-3 - XBOX 360
METAL GEAR SOLID 4 - GAME MOVIE?
METAL GEAR SOLID PW - 360
METAL GEAR SOLID Ground Zeroes - PS4
METAL GEAR SOLID 5 - PS4

Just saw this - SNES classic for a PlayStation 1 game…?

FYI, MGS2 and 3 are best played on a PS2 or PS3 due to their liberal use of pressure controls on the face buttons, which the 360 can’t do. And if you go PS2, make sure you get the Subsistence version of MGS3 for the superior camera.

Also, a “game movie” for 4 is just…no. Play it properly.

Basically, get the cheapest PS3 you can find and the Legacy Collection for 1-4. This also includes Peace Walker. And if the digital code for 1 is expired/used already, you can just get a secondhand PS1 copy since all PS1 games work on any model of PS3.

The PC port of MGS1 isn’t bad, though. At least, from what I remember.

If you play Metal Gear Solid, you should play MGS: The Twin Snakes for the GameCube. It adds MGS2’s first-person mode, among other things, to the gameplay. MUCH better experience than the original PS1 title.

Jesus Christ, please don’t do that. Twin Snakes is cancer.

And I say that as someone who bought a GameCube just for Twin Snakes.

Okay, I’ll actually go into some detail.

The biggest problem with Twin Snakes is the addition of MGS2 mechanics without altering the level design in any way, shape, or form. This breaks the game and makes it laughably easy - the levels were never designed to allow for firing a weapon in first person or hanging from railings.

But the other major problem is the cutscenes, which add a ton of absurd Matrix-y crap that breaks the atmosphere of the game. Snake should not do a kickflip off a missile in midair. Fuck that.

Basically, telling someone to play Twin Snakes instead isn’t like telling someone to play the Final Fantasy X PS4 remaster, which doesn’t alter cutscenes or add game mechanics that the game was never intended to accommodate.

Telling someone to play Twin Snakes first is like telling someone to make the conscious decision watch the 2011 Blu-Ray SE of Star Wars instead of the original version because the 1977 effects are dated.

So I ended up watching a playthrough of MGS (Orignal) since I can’t get into the top-down gameplay. [Link to playthrough] https://youtu.be/VKzUk6RNrrU

After I finished that I’ll be buying the ‘HD Collection’ then so on.

Note: Awhile ago I was thinking of getting a SNES Classic so I could softmod it to run ps1 games, but I changed my mind and got a PS1 classic and softmod that instead.

Oh, okay, I wasn’t sure what you meant about the SNES thing.

Mind you, MGS2 is still pretty “top down” gameplay-wise, though the addition of a first-person aiming mechanic might help for you. MGS3 in the HD Collection is the Subsistence version with the more modern camera, though.

FYI, apparently Metal Gear Solid 4 is now fully playable on PC via “a special fork of RPCS3” for those interested in playing it who don’t own a PS3.

I really need to upgrade to a PS4. Especially now that Shenmue 3 is out. I’ve been waiting decades for this and I don’t have the console to play it.

If you’re in the US, Best Buy is currently having a sale for the 1TB PS4 slim for $199.

Oh wow. Thank you for letting me know that! That’s a great deal. I may have to splurge.

I’d like to add on to The Twin Snakes by saying that I much prefer the original release. What I honestly dislike about The Twin Snakes is that they have Snake do shit in cutscenes that he didn’t do (and honestly wouldn’t do) in the original title. For example, during mission briefing when I believe Snake mentions something about spy movies (I think) and he does this cringy finger-gun gesture that comes off as so cheesy (but not in the classic Kojima way). But what I REALLY dislike is when after Snake saves Kenneth Baker and he holds his gun to Baker’s head just because he forgot Meryl’s codec frequency. It’s so weird and wrong.

It should be noted that The Twin Snakes is NOT a Hideo Kojima game, he only served as producer I believe. A rule for me when it comes to the Metal Gear franchise is if it isn’t directed by Kojima, skip it.

I just received a PS4 as a gift as part of a Black Friday deal on Sony’s official website! Super excited as I was able to get five games. I picked up Horizon: Zero Dawn, Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us, Spider-Man, and Gran Turismo: Sport!

I’m trying to avoid spoilers as I’ve only played the first chapter so far but this game is truly so much fun and amazing that I had to share it! It has a great soundtrack, relatable characters, and a very interesting and cool premise. The less said the better. I couldn’t recommend it more though.

I recently watched a retrospective on the Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire multimedia project, and on the segment dedicated to the SotE videogame they reference the fact that it has a bit of everything, an on-rails shooter, third-person action shooter, starfighter shooter, and they consider this a weakness but I disagree.

I kinda miss games that had a bit of everything. Now it’s strictly a platformer, an action RPG, an open world adventure, but there’s no mix-and-match.

I love that game - and still play it from time to time. Agree with you - the variety of styles is a strength of SOTE, not a weakness - especially considering the length of the game too.

When I was 11 years old I had the original version of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, the one that had the original Fire Temple music with the Islamic chanting and Ganondorf coughing red blood, but it was lost when we moved and my father bought the game once again but it was version 1.2. Considering how rare that cartridge is I lament its loss.

On a related note I also wish I had Majora’s Mask, because for whatever reason it was never added to my N64 collection. I only borrowed it twice and beat the game 100%. Recently I looked up how much would it cost me to buy an original cartridge, and at $35 give or take I find it rather pricey.

Just bought the Switch bundle with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe! I’m really so excited and looking forward to playing games I’ve not experienced since childhood as I’m planning to also add Pokemon Sword, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wind, and Star Wars: Racer at some point too. It will be great to get Pokemon TV too!

Added New Pokemon Snap the other day. It’s been really fun and very relaxing. It has a very calming effect. I love that it combines my loves of photography, ecology, and Pokemon all in one.
