A question re the 2006 OT DVD versions

I’m new here, so sorry if the topic I’m bringing up has been discussed at length here already. I tried searching for a thread to add to, but couldn’t find one that seemed fitting enough.

My question is, what are the major concerns with the 2006 DVD releases of the Orignial Theatrical Editions? I’m speaking of the ones that were released in the 2disc sets where disc one was yet another release of the 2004 DVD Special Editions, and the 2nd Bonus disc was the Original Theatre versions.

There is much talk about how the original versions aren’t available, and I understand that there isn’t a blu-ray or digital release of the OT theatrical editions, but aren’t these DVD’s very close in content to what we could possibly expect should the OT theatrical editions actually get modern format release?

What was it about these particular DVD’s that just didn’t suffice for a satisfying original theatrical release for fans?

To put it bluntly, they were unremastered and sourced from outdated 1993 non-anamorphic widescreen Laserdisc masters, pretty unforgiving even for 2006 standards.

Thanks.

So it is just the quality of the production of those 2006 releases that people have been disappointed with?

But, as far as content is concerned, those 2006 releases at least have all of the unaltered, non special edition updated effects and visuals, correct?

Prior to the 1993 laser disc releases, nothing (aside from the Episode IV and English language labels on the Death Star computers that I understand was done in 1981) has been done to the original theatrical editions that these 2006 Dvd’s wouldn’t reflect?

Not sure what you mean by the Death Star computer screens. If you mean the English being changed to a Star Wars language on the tractor beam screen that was done in 2004. Yes the ‘Episode IV A New Hope’ was added to the crawl in 1981.

The 2006 bonus DVD of the first film is basically the 1977 film with the 1993 LD mix which had subtle differences from the original audio. I believe subtle audio changes were made to the other two films in 1993 but don’t quote me on that. Nothing visual as far as I know was changed with the last two films.

That’s what I was talking about.

Thanks for the help!

As far as I can tell: Aside from one missig sound effect in Empire, no. Unless you take into account the teathrical mono mix for Empire which had some different content but with Jedi at least I don’t think there were any changes done before 97.

Was it really worth bumping a months dormant thread just to say “Interesting”?

not to mention these are well known issues of the gout discussed at length pretty much everywhere else, and the OP hasn’t come back since posting this thread. not really interesting, imo.

on the subject of the 2006 Bonus discs , aka the GOUT , which I own …a few observations …I have a few different tv displays in my home . from lcd to crt and I have noticed that they look different in quality when viewed on different displays . They look crisper on a crt monitor and I think it is because older films were not made with HD displays like the flat panel widescreen tv’s we have today . I remember seeing film grain and scratches when I would see films in the theater as a kid in the late 70s and early 80s .And I am not arguing against an official high quality release . just sharing my observations. The best display that I have found to watch it on is my Samsung slimfit 38 inch widescreen CRT tv which was gifted to me a couple years ago , it is from 2006 and is HD (720 p) capable and even has 2 hdmi ports , the only CRT tv I have ever seen like this … The Image actually fills the screen in letterbox format without stretching the image and with no window boxing and it looks pretty sharp .when viewed on my 60 inch lcd , it is stretched to fit and looks very old and faded .Also , if you take the insert out of the front cover of each disc , you can turn it around and re insert it and have some nice painted theatrical posters instead of the lazy photo shop recreations

From my experience if you put them into a Blu Ray player they upscale nicely.
