Idea: A TLJ Edit to please everybody? — Page 2

“Who’s the girl” is a repeated line. Rey talks about waiting for her parents. The flashback focuses on her being left as a child. The phrasing “but there’s someone who still could” begs the audience to question “who?”.

Johnson just worked with what he was given.

I think the only real meta line is when Kylo says “You have no part in this story.” That’s a bit strange. The other meta bit is the cave scene, which clearly is designed to build anticipation for the audience. For Rey, however, a face would go a long way to help her feel some connection to her parents, something to hold onto.

The rest, I think, is consistent with Rey’s abandonment issues introduced in TFA, which Kylo keeps needling her about in TLJ.

KYLO: Your parents threw you away like garbage.
REY: They didn’t!
KYLO: They did. But you can’t stop needing them. It’s your greatest weakness.

It’s not so much who they were as identity or bloodline but who they were as people. She’s jealous of Kylo Ren; not because his father was Han Solo, but because ”You had a father who loved you, he gave a damn about you.”

That Rey’s parents threw her aware like trash is horrific, an idea Rey had to have considered but couldn’t accept until Kylo forced her to:

KYLO: Do you wanna know the truth about your parents? Or have you always known? And you’ve just hidden it away. You know the truth. Say it. Say it.
REY: They were nobody.
KYLO REN: They were filthy junk traders who sold you off for drinking money.

While “They were nobody” could be interpreted as “They weren’t important”, the takeaway I always got from the scene was Rey’s utter despair at finally acknowledging that she had been abandoned, and any hope that her parents were good people who loved her was a fantasy. It’s terrifying but engaging and relatable; and it’s undone in TROS.

Yes. Exactly.

His “you have no place in this story” is a callback to her talking to Luke saying “I want to know my place in all of this.” Swapping the word story (though I’d argue it’s a common turn of phrase) might alleviate that “meta” quality. I disagree with the mirror being meta, to me it’s similar to Luke finding his own face under Vader’s mask. In both cases, the hero finds their own face at the heart of their fears.

Oh, I agree! Neither bother me. Those are just the two things that would seem closest to being meta to me.

Author

It’s a larger sense of belonging. Not just a desire for a family but to know her path and her destiny, what it means for her to suddenly have all this power. She’s hoping for some secret truth about her parents that will give her the answers, not just for who she is, but for what she should do. The answer is there’s no answer, and there’s no easy path for her to follow. It is up to her.

The only way I’d say you could please (most) everyone is a project that mimicked the choose your own adventure like what I understand Black Mirror Bandersnatch did.

This is Star Wars not Goosebumps

Abrams’ films were childish and horrific… maybe it is Goosebumps! 😜

I could say my thoughts on Ruin Johnsons film but Id probably get banned with all of the cursing, insults & name calling Id just end up making toward Ruin Johnson so I’ll hold myself back. The Crap Jedi is the Batman v Superman of Star Wars. The less I say about that stupid shit the better

Cant slam JJA with out giving Ruin Johnson his fair share of criticism of what he did. Both men are at fault equally with what happened

That kind of rhetoric isn’t really welcome here. If you want to make that kind of argument you’ll have to be more nuanced than that.

You missed the point - this isn’t the section of the site for these type of remarks.

As has been said of many occasions…

A quick reminder that the Star Wars Preservation and Star Wars Fan Edit sections of the site are NOT the places to bash on certain eras or aspects of the films, actors, film-makers or owners - or any perceived ‘agendas’ or politics thereof.

There are far more relevant threads in the Beyond the Original Trilogy or General Star Wars Discussion sections of the site to talk about this.

Critiquing a scene in the Star Wars Fan Edits section with the aim of improving it, removing it, altering it etc is perfectly fine. Statements such as ‘Disney sucks’ and ‘this film is so shit no Fan Edit can save it’ is not.

Fan Editors, Preservationists and members do not want the same sort of repeated comments and discussions in the ‘Fan Project’ areas - especially when they’ve already taken place (and continuing) in other more relevant sections of the site, as linked to above.

Do you wish to carry on with those kind of remarks in here?

If there are posts voicing frustration about the pacing of the film, the lack of deleted scenes available, certain scenes or character arcs, legitimate criticism of the writing etc - with the aim of coming up with better / improved Edits… it generally isn’t a problem (without personal or toxic insults etc, of course).

Though posts such as yours made previously on here - which earnt you two quick warnings in succession - sure, let me know.

Just a reminder; I’m still waiting for a reply to some info from you in PMs - I look forward to finally reading them.

Now, if we could get back on the topic of thread… 👍

None of that points to any sort of mystery surrounding Rey’s parents. There’s a mystery surrounding Rey’s incredible power, and Rey’s abandonment is a key plot point, but those two plot threads are not the same.

Also, when Maz says “There’s someone who still could”, she explicitly says that she’s not referring to Rey’s parents, but instead to Luke. Her whole speech is basically saying “Forget your parents, your future lies with the Jedi now.” I wish that was where they left it, instead of making Rey’s entire character arc about heritage and bloodline or whatever.

Rey mentions Luke, as if guessing who her parents are. Ridley even mentioned that she believed Luke to be her father when making The Force Awakens because of how that scene was structured. I think fans were the only ones that questioned her power, even Kylo states it as a matter of fact rather than questioning how an untrained girl could be so powerful, warning others that she’s testing her powers and will only become more dangerous. Her search for belonging is very tied to her parents throughout the movie, this is part of why she gravitates to Han and feels so angry that Kylo would kill one of his parents.

TLJ is what STARTED the downward spiral of this whole thing because BOTH men refused to work with each other so no this is all on TLJ. I would happily blame the person in charge that allowed an unplanned work as you go trilogy 2 begin with but that is a no no because the person in charge is a woman & gets no blame. So RJ & TLJ gets the most of it. JJA gets some of it & Crazy KK gets a weeeee little bit of it. So gotta start with RJ & TLJ getting the bulk of the blame

TLJ simply cant be fixed on its own. TROS while is also worse than TLJ simply DID NOT START THIS MESS. All 3 movies in The Kennedy Trilogy as a whole would need a new narrative. As they are just bad fan fiction in their official form

In fairness to KK, she tried her best to push TFA to 2016, adding a year which would have allowed for a more thought out trilogy.
Disney was eager to make back their 4 billion dollar investment so they demanded a late 2015 release.
Ultimately it was Disney’s greed that was the downfall of this trilogy.

Disney played a part yes. But KK is the one that allowed all directors to do their own thing. KK is the one that DID NOT WANT LUKE IN EPISODE 7 because he would take away the attention from the new characters. Even with Disneys demands what happened is still on KK. No schedule demands are responsible for Crazy KKs terrible creative decisions only Crazy KK is responsible
