Star Wars (1977) - a general Random Thoughts thread — Page 3

I think you’re reading way more those rough sketches that what the images show. The first image provides no information on wardrobe at all. It’s just a dark figure. Those aren’t fabric lines on the figure laying down, just normal flow lines in this type of figure sketch.
Obviously Lucas likes scantly clad damsels, it shows up in RotJ, but those pics provide no evidence on plans for a nude Leia in Star Wars.

I really love the deleted Luke & Biggs scenes.
It’s the only time we get to see Luke being himself, comfortably, around people he knows & likes.
And I like this Luke. The scene with Luke n’ Biggs having a beer is just great. Luke is cool & funny. Makes me sad that this personal moment isn’t in the film & we never actually get to see who Luke really was. Just him whining to his uncle.

For those of us who had the comics, novel, and storybook growing up, it was baffling that it wasn’t in the movie. As the radio drama expanded on it even more, you’d think Lucas would have reinstated those scenes in 1997. Putting the Biggs’ reunion/vouching for Luke’s piloting skills scene back in only pronounces their absence.

I was thinking about a moment from the Obi-Wan vs. Vader duel when Vader says “You should not have come back” and Obi-Wan flashes a very concerned look.

Obi

My thought was when considering a prequel rewrite, to make this bit the time when Obi-Wan realizes that it’s Anakin who is Vader, not the “other pupil.” He thought that there could be a chance (i.e., saw Anakin using the dark side more and more), but never truly realized it until this moment. Obi-Wan remains resolute despite the revelation, with his smirk towards Vader now meaning something like, “Anakin, that’s your son out there. I’m making damn sure he’s getting away from you now and I’ve got a guy who’ll help him kill you. Your obsession with me hasn’t changed since the Clone Wars, so you probably can’t sense him at this moment.”

I like the idea of Obi-Wan being in the dark about Vader’s true identity all these years, as it adds a little bit of dramatic weight to each time Obi-Wan tries to tell Luke about Vader. Heck, it even gives his final conference with Luke in ESB a bit more weight. He can’t tell Luke the truth he just found out (and probably told Yoda), so as not to give him that same disconcertion he had during the ANH duel. Obi-Wan knows that Luke won’t be able to take this revelation well, as unlike him, he hasn’t had the many years to ponder it.

And maybe the original “Darth Vader” was Obi-Wan’s other pupil, and he disappeared or was killed, but Anakin assumed his name for some reason? Interesting concept.

^ totally agree ! When the 1997 Special edition was announced , this was the thing I most wanted to see and I was really bummed out when it did not happen . First time I got to see the Luke /Biggs Anchorhead scenes was on the Behind The Magic cd-rom a year later . That storybook had me imagining what it would have been like in the film for 20 years at that point .

For sure. I loved the storybook!
Someday I’ll get around to putting the beer drinking scene back in as in my signature.

Darth Vader only has one outfit. It’s made of head-to-toe black leather and he hardly ever takes it off. He wears it all the time, and his house is on a sweltering volcano planet with rivers of molten lava.

Forget Tarkin’s foul stench, imagine how bad Vader must smell.

I imagined Vader had a whole wardrobe of suits - probably organising them from light to dark colours - or Summer to Winter…

Seeing Star Wars for the first time at the age of 8, I recall wondering at the time how Darth Vader blew his nose… After Empire, rumours went round at school that he had tubes coming out of his nostrils and up to the top of his head, so that all the cr*p ended up there. God only knows why I still remember this!

It occurs to me that Obi-Wan Kenobi’s first name (added in the 1976 draft) suggests a “pale belt” or a white belt from karate (suitable for a wizardly advisory figure, in the vein of Gandalf the White).

Then I remembered that Edgar Allan Poe allegedly contrived to get himself thrown out of West Point by wearing “white belts and gloves, under arms” during a parade inspection, as per regulations… but nothing else.

Then I remembered that around the time of the 1975 third draft, Lucas drew on Kurosawa’s Hidden Fortress for inspiration by consdiering casting Ben Kenobi as Japanese, and Leia as either Japanese or part-Asian, suggesting a familial relationship of some sort.

And then it came to mind that Ben Kenobi had a prosthetic left arm in that draft also.

And then I thought about how people in the desert climate of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Barsoom generally don’t wear clothing except for the leather straps of their “war harness”.

Now I’ve got a vision in my head of Leia Organa, Queen of the New Alderaan colony on Tatooine, going around wearing nothing but some strategically placed belts and long gloves to cover up a pair of droid arms.

I think I might have done a little too much LDS, as they say. 😉

And speaking of which, Lucas says in Dale Pollock’s Skywalking: “You can make this picture for teenagers, late teenagers, early twenties, or you play it for kids, and that’s what we’re going for, eight- and nine-year-olds. This is a Disney picture.”

Which sounds like he did give some serious thought to travelling the other side of that particular fork.

I don’t recall any charred corpses, severed limbs, or entire planets being blown to bits in any pre-1977 Disney movies. 😉

And if THAT was what Lucas called “Disney-picture” Star Wars, imagine what he thought would be the “teenage” version…

I’d buy that movie ticket for a dollar!

One of the things I love most about Star Wars is how many archetypes and inspirations it throws in. There’s Akira Kurosawa, Flash Gordon serials, The Searchers, second world war films, Metropolis and Casablanca, and those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

By the way, I stole this random point from the BFI classics book for Star Wars by Will Brooker, and if anyone’s looking for a good book/analysis on the film, it’s a must.

Yeah there is a ton of stuff Lucas based the movie on. Even those old EC Comics by Al Williamson had some influence. And of course the King Comics Flash Gordon Al did along with Roy Krenkel.

It was a no brainer when Lucas asked Al Williamson to do the Star Wars Newspaper strips. They both were fans of old movies, movie serials and comics from the old days when they were in newspapers. Both were die hard Alex Raymond fans.

I’d never heard of Al Williamson, I’ve spent the last few minutes checking him out. His comic art is fantastic. Thanks for that!
