It’s truly mind boggling to me that someone could have two problems with this movie, and one of them is that a specific kind of TIE fighter doesn’t have hyperdrive. Like, you realize how ridiculous that sounds right?

The Space Shuttle Atlantis uncouples from the ISS at the conclusion of another successful mission. On the other side of the space station, a VW Beetle from Russia fires its retro rockets on approach.

Not the same thing. Star Wars isn’t real life, and you don’t need to read an obscure EU book to know that a VW Beetle can’t fly in space. I’m not bothered by it at all, and I love the imagery of an X-Wing and a TIE fighter parked next to each other. It really helps illustrate Rey and Kylo coming together.

Obi-wan says that this TIE fighter is specifically short range in the original movie, no EU required.

But that implies there are also long range fighters. It was only the EU that established none of the Imperial fighters can jump to lightspeed, so I don’t see the problem. And like I said before, I think the idea of “plot holes” as an objective measure of quality is dumb in general.

Could it not be as simple as Ben Solo returning to his Star Destroyer, post Death Star fight, in the only available working craft he could find. When the fleet then jumps to Exegol, he sneaks off the Star Destroyer in the same craft to help Rey and kill Palpatine. This requires no prototype fighter and no hand waving. To me it is a logical choice Ben is likely to have made.

Another way to put it I guess is that I would be more likely to watch TROS in full and AotC in bits and pieces. AotC puts me to sleep, TROS already feels like a mashup on fast forward with scenes so quick and hollow there’s hardly anything to skip to. Does TROS have cleaner performances and effects, sure. Does it have more exciting action and story? Not so sure.

I mean AOTC does feature probably the bottom 3 worst action scenes in the whole franchise.

Sure I don’t rate either highly but I also can’t think of any action scenes from TROS that are any more visually interesting than seismic charges.

NeverarGreat I know how you feel. I waited more than 25 years for my favorite book series, the Dark Tower, to become a film. And when it finally did it was a steaming pile of shit.

I feel like one of the lucky few to have had my 25 year payoff and loved every minute of it with Twin Peaks: The Return.

Oh I feel like there’s plenty that’s as visually interesting as that. Sonically, on the other hand…

Let’s all wait 5 years for the new High Republic Trilogy to ruin Star Wars and then the same ST haters will crown the ST for “at least isn’t as bad as the new High Republic Trilogy”. I’m calling it.

You know, it is kind of surprising that they went into this trilogy knowing the main character would be female, but they didn’t seem to even consider hiring a female writer. I mean, clearly there were female cooks in the kitchen early on, like Kennedy and Hart. And I’m not saying men can’t write women characters, but I feel like Rey might’ve lacked something that a female writer really could’ve provided for her.

The problem isn’t new perspectives but the lack of good writers in general. All those millions spent without having something decent on paper. And they could have salvaged something, but they let JJ near the writer’s room and they gave Terrio more work for some reason.

Rey is far from the biggest issue with Disney’s films. Even if she were expertly written the trilogy would still be hot trash from a story perspective.

I despise TFA and TLJ but can fully understand how someone may enjoy those films… I guess. I absolutely cannot fathom how anyone could defend TROS without being drunk out of their mind; it’s the cinematic equivalent of a computer generated algorithm shorting out while the Star Wars theme plays in the background and a 5 year old smashes 500 million dollar action figures against the computer terminal. It is probably the single most perfect example of a corporate-controlled dumpster fire we’ll ever see.

I’m completely sober but I love TROS. I won’t go into exhaustive detail, but I can break it down to this - TFA was a clone of ANH, TLJ was a clone of TESB (with a dash of ROTJ), and TROS was unsurprisingly ROTJ on steroids. So when I watch TFA I naturally just feel like swapping it out for ANH. Ditto TLJ and TESB. Can’t beat the originals right?

TROS is the exception for me. I think it’s better than ROTJ - indeed for me it’s what I wish ROTJ had been. I don’t know if you’ve seen my previous posts but I did not expect this at all. I was very pleasantly surprised. So yeah, I’m happy to defend it while sipping nothing stronger than tea!

Outside of the fact that the film blatantly craps on the first 6 films, TROS isn’t even consistent with the other two films in its own trilogy. Other than “pew pew lasers woohoo!” I don’t get what there is to latch onto and I’ve seen every argument for the film imaginable. I get someone liking it in a dumb turn-your-brain-off way, but even if you take away the Star Wars brand name it’s just a really poorly constructed film in its own right.

But I mean you’re not gonna change my mind and I’m not gonna change yours, so you do you, more power to you. If you love the film I’m certainly not going to slap your wrist and tell you that’s not allowed. I’ll definitely never understand it though.

Knock it off mate (the bold part). People who want to ‘defend’ the film - or just talk about what they enjoyed etc about it certainly can on here - so enough of the _“without being drunk of their mind” shite.

People like different things - you don’t have to be uncivil about people who enjoy stuff… that you seemingly can’t comprehend.

‘Defend’?

I can’t fathom why people talking about something they like - or the things they liked in it is seen as ‘defending’ the film.

ooj is right when he says people in fandom look to take sides when talking about films; attack and defend is the mindset for so many people over the past few years. Not which scene was good, or okay, or mixed, or out of place, or jarring, or awful - it is all or nothing for many.

Defend and attack? No thankyou.

But I will talk about what I liked - I must be drunk out of mind a lot! 😉 (but I am not drunk out of mind when I talk about the things I didn’t like, eh?)

I was being flippant and not directing it towards anybody specific. Somewhat strange that light jabs at most Star Wars content in other threads goes unnoticed and unstopped but gets immidiately smacked down in a ST thread over a silly exaggerated remark. If I had a dollar for every snarky comment directed my way on here for liking the prequels I’d be rich. I believe this is the opinions thread, not the “praise TROS thread,” unless I’m mistaken?

Again, I was being flippant and it wasn’t meant as an attack. I don’t care if someone likes the movie, I just find it so atrocious that I cannot believe there’s any merit to be found within it. Is that better?

If jokes aren’t allowed I’ll be happy to refrain from making one again and apologise if it was taken to be overly aggressive, as that was not my intention.

As already stated to you… criticism of the films are welcome (there is quite a bit in here and in the other review/opinion threads) - yet criticism, denigrating or attacking people who have a different opinion… not so much.

The ‘what-aboutism’ doesn’t wash - if someone is taking shots at you over your posts liking the Prequels let a moderator know - it doesn’t give you an excuse to make similar comments like that yourself.

No… who said jokes are not allowed? Of course they are - yet we both know that is not what you were saying in your post. To claim what you said as a ‘joke’ - and infer that they are not allowed… well, I thought you were better than that.

If you were being flippant - then use an emoticon or make it clear that you are flippant or ironic etc.

But I am sure the members here who have to be “drunk out of their mind” to ‘defend’ or talk positively about the film (or parts of it) appreciate the ‘apology’ - nice one! 😃

You posting “I just find it so atrocious that I cannot believe there’s any merit to be found within it.” - yeah, not a problem with it - though could maybe go into some detail or with an explanation as to what you found so atrocious?

Or if conversing with someone who does likes film - or aspects of it - try and see their point of view, even if you disagree with it? Maybe you’ll both learn something from each other and the others around you - instead of this ‘defend and attack’ and ‘making blanket statements’ mentality which seems so prevalent in fandom of late.

Ultimately, it is up to you…

but this is a bit of an over-reaction to being told to simply knock it off over ‘a joke’ (as you now claim), yes?

I was reacting to the tone of your comment, which came off as hostile - if I was wrong to perceive it in that way then sure, that’s on me. But in regards to “we both know that is not what you were saying in your post,” I’d argue you swearing and being passive aggressive is far from “told to simply knock it off over a ‘joke,’” in which case I’d call my response apt. Unless you’re implying I completely misread the intended tone of your post, but you didn’t misread the intended tone of mine? Either way I’ll be sure to chuck an emoji in next time to clear it up.

And for the record yes, it was a joke.

But I won’t say anything more on the matter as it’s not the subject of the thread.

I’m sorry if my comments seemed serious and offended anyone, they were not intended to do so.

Adding a smiley face after saying something insulting wouldn’t make it a joke and is behavior that is actually passive aggressive in contrast to oojason’s behavior which was not. And if an apology has the word IF in it, it might not be taken as a real apology.

My Final Thoughts on this Film.
JJ abrams is basically trying to say that Rey uses the lessons she has learned from the legacy characters, and it is that which defines her. She rejects her palpatine lineage and chooses her own identity, which is what she’s been searching for since TFA. Unfortunately Abrams does not understand star wars nearly enough from a fundamental story perspective.

In my opinion Abrams really lacks vision and should never have been allowed to write, nor should have Chris Terrio. You hear things like "We’re really hard on ourselves and constantly saying - It’s not good enough - " I would much rather hear things from them like “wow we are really passionate about what we are trying to say”.

The worst part of the film for me is the Rey vs Palpatine stuff. If you compare it with how Luke defeats Palps there is absolutely no debate. The line alone “I am a jedi like my father before me”, coupled with the fact that he throws his lightsaber away is the ultimate victory over Palpatine. Luke chooses to reject killing both Palpatine and Vader. This is where Abrams shows such an elementary understanding of what George was trying to say in this moment.

Having Rey literally kill Palpatine with the same thing that Mace Windu does in ROTS is so utterly tragically inconsistent with George’s story I cannot even begin to comprehend what he was thinking. Rey literally is using violence to murder this man. Not even Anakin would have done this. “IT’S NOT THE JEDI WAY” -ROTS.

Now you can argue that Rey didn’t kill Palpatine, Palpatine killed himself. But having him die through such horrifying violence totally diminishes Luke throwing away the saber. Luke defeats Palpatine to the very core of who he is without having to lay a finger on him. Abrams totally muddles his own message here, and poses the question “well did Rey actually learn anything” more importantly, “did the audience learn anything?” What does this story have to offer me as a human being? Define my own destiny but make the same mistakes as the previous generation? Defeat evil with 2 lightsabers? Not only am I upset by this film, I believe it comes into conflict with everything George has tried to say over the years. I had fun watching this film, but in a way where I feel like it’s a joke that I don’t have to take very seriously.

This is what gets me the most, so vitally important, these deeper morals are what give the stories their true meaning and purpose, to be reduced to any other popcorn blockbuster ending sells the saga short. Lucas did a lot of confounding things, but he always understood it was deeper than that.
