LOL, we don’t agree. You telling me we do is kind of weird. I know I don’t agree with you. And it’s fine that we don’t agree! I don’t have a preference between the two. I think they’re just broken in different ways. I don’t think the deepfake helps at all in any significant way.

This is normally where I’d say “let’s agree to disagree” but you obviously don’t want to do that, haha 😃

whoops, I see what I did there. I don’t have a preference is what I meant. I misread your question. But I explained why I had no preference for either version later in the post anyway (and again up there).

Either way, at least I provided some distraction from your boredom, so there’s that! 😃

I like it just because it’s so weird and it makes Forest Whitaker’s weirdness even MORE over the top, but I don’t think it at all worked the way it was intended to.

But I do like it, despite that. Just saying “BOR GULLET!” is pretty fun.

Anybody got any info on the brain-sucking slug thing? Why is it in the movie? Why add that in when it has no effect? How hard has it been for fan-editors to remove it? I mean, I’m assuming that’s been done, right?
Does anybody like it?

Obviously, you don’t watch tentacle hentai.

No, no, no!
It’s just the non-effective mind-melt thing I don’t like.
Sorry for the confusion.

I desperately tried to keep Bor Gullet in when I first tried to do a fan-edit of Rogue One, but it seems to be one of the elements of the movie most people dislike. And I can understand, because it makes you think that Bodhi will be crazy, but he just shakes it off by the time we get to the next scene.

I also agree about the Leia stuff. I do think the deep fake looks more like Carrie, but the mouth still looks bad. It doesn’t really matter to me which version is used, because as soon as she opens her mouth you can tell something is off. It would be nice if you could cut away from her face before she says, “Hope.” Maybe cut to a shot of R2, or just cut to the final shot.

Now that the 4K version is out, and people are saying it has the most visual improvement out of the new collection, it might be time for me to go back and finish it.

Author
Time

Yeah. Maybe some vfx could be used to just not have her say anything, like you said.
If that doesn’t work, you could show her turn around and look up, but right before she speaks, you cut to the window shot as they jump to hyperspace. Hmm. I mean, she could still say hope, but you just don’t see her say it. Or, you just leave the question the captain asks open. OR, don’t have the captain ask that question at all. Just have her hand it to her.

I actually think if one were to spend more time training the algorithm to learn Carrie’s facial mannerisms it could fix her mouth.

Here’s an example of it doing just that with Robert De Niro’s mouth.

That is definitely a much more impressive demo than the Rogue One attempt from 2018. There were a couple times I actually said “oh wow” out loud 😃

But I think the difference is that the facial de-aging in The Irishman is (correct me if I’m wrong) begun with filmed capture of their actual on-set performances. So this video shows the VFX artist deepfaking faces on top of camera-captured real faces (albeit CGI-enhanced/de-aged ones), not full blown cgi-created facial movements. That could be why the mouths appear to move much more naturally in these deepfakes, because the mouths are actually moving naturally. If they were trying to layer a deepfake head over the top of a computer animated person, I’d bet the mouth movements would still look unnnatural because they’re trying to map legitimate human expressions captured by a camera to a fundamentally unnatural animated movement.

But I do think you’re right that what’s really preventing it from looking the way it was obviously intended to look by ILM is just time. In the space of a year deepfakes have gotten scary good, even moreso than they were when people first started getting scared by how good they were. Maybe in another year or two someone will know exactly how to deepfake Carrie Fisher into that footage flawlessly. Right now, I don’t think anyone’s there just yet. But it’ll probably happen, given enough time.

(although, considering how poorly her posthumous footage was used in Rise of Skywalker, and how not-good this Rogue One footage was, maybe everyone should take a whole lot of that time off from digitally de-aging and/or resurrecting Carrie Fisher, just on general principle)

That’s how I wish they would have handled it in the film. When I was in the theater the first time, I thought that might be how they were about to handle it. I was sorry they showed her face and had her speak. Totally unnecessary.

I sure hope that’s available after the fact (about to head out on a motorcycle ride). I would be interested to hear what went on in the reshoots. For the record, I love the film and have no problem with what we got. The ending/plans transmission/etc works for me just fine.

I suppose I’m more interested only because it’s been so guarded. They’ve been more open with the behind the scenes disaster that was Solo.

I was reading through the early pages of this thread, and that’s how I predicted the film would end-
With a character handing the plans to an unseen girl in a white cloak… Too bad.

There is also a great ‘overview’ style writeup on it:

20 Things We Learned From the New ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ Commentary: ‘Inglourious Basterds’ References, Alternate Titles, Cassian’s Backstory, and More - at the SlashFilm website.

Some of it I have heard before, but some new stuff there as well. I couldn’t watch the full youtube video, it just is not for me, but it does work great as intended - a commentary track.

I hope Gareth does talk about his time on the film soon, and also does a commmentary track too!

The Inglorious Bastards reference is obvious, I recognized it immediately.
But, it was done so poorly in comparison, that I don’t think I’d ever mention it.
I like R1 & I dig all of Gareth Edwards films so far, but, c’mon. Tarantino this ain’t.

Same! I’m dying to hear Edwards talk candidly about the film. But, I really doubt the Mouse will ever allow it.

That was an interesting read! I especially like the bit about Wedge not being at the battle of Scariff. It never occurred to me, but it’s kind of a hilarious little retcon that the “cut the chatter, Red 2” line is now more of a “yeah we know, WE all saw this thing a few days ago and where were you? Now get to work.”

The more I watch Rogue One the more I highly regard it. It definitely captures the spirituality and feel of the first six Star Wars films the best. I love Chirrut and the scenes on Jedha especially. I appreciate how it expands the lore and canon but doesn’t step on the toes of anything that came before or after it. It feels like a love letter to both the Prequels and Originals. I’m always really glad when there’s geninue parallels to the Prequels through ring composition and this film has loads of them. it certainly could use a bit more character development but Sam Witwer made the good point of how in A New Hope we know just about the same amount of information as we do with the characters in Rogue One. It’s really a good point. All and all it’s a beautiful looking film with lots of fun and interesting themes.

“Heroes come in all sizes, and you don’t have to be a giant hero. You can be a very small hero. It’s just as important to understand that accepting self-responsibility for the things you do, having good manners, caring about other people - these are heroic acts. Everybody has the choice of being a hero or not being a hero every day of their lives.” - George Lucas
