The following contains spoilers from The Mandalorian…

Comparison…

I think perhaps the TV series might win a bit… But it’s not to late. I said about the color of the haze > around the planet before and it looked a bit much on your still perhaps but I will leave it up to you.

I think the more blue / purple is the way to go personally though. Actually the turqoise color comes under the >purple blue if the TV series is anything to go by.

Planet has less contrast more whispy too and a bit different tint.

Amazing that, after all those years, the clouds haven’t moved an inch 😉

But i think we should keep any discussion about the Mandalorian eps out of this thread for those that haven’t had a chance to watch it yet.

I am amazed that a double sun parched desert planet has that many clouds at all.

Has anyone seen episode 5 of The Mandalorian yet? About three minutes into the episode a new digital shot replicates the opening of a New Hope.

It appears to be recreated using the original elements from ANH, not digital.

Wouldn’t be worth nabbing till they dropped the blurays any ways. Streaming quality isn’t as high. I keep hoping they’ll show more clone wars era destruction that i might be able to use when the blurays drop.

I don’t agree. No Mandalorian discs, Blurays or otherwise, are going to drop anytime soon. And the episodes are available in 4K as well as 1080p.

Unfortunately, streaming quality isn’t as high as Blu-Ray quality would be. And also unfortunately, if it’s not released on physical disc or, at minimum, a purchaseable download (versus streaming subscriptions), working on an edit using material from it would mean that edit can’t be discussed at fanedit.org or listed on IFDb due to their extremely strict “own the source” rule.

Sadly, though, I agree - it’s unlikely that The Mandalorian will be released on physical media in the forseeable future.

If something isn’t commercially available on physical media, I feel like being subscribed to the service where it is commercially available should count as “owning the source” for the purposes of fanediting. Either way you’re circumventing copy protection, which isn’t strictly speaking legal due to the DMCA in the US. As media moves from an ownership model to a subscription model this will become more and more of a problem for faneditors.

It definitely raises an interesting question regarding the legality of it all. I agree with you that under current fan editing rules, if you proved you have a subscription to the relevant streaming service, that would prove that you have purchased that product/service in a similar vein as owning a physical copy of the movie/show of the fan edit, and in effect not taking away from their revenue. But yeah, it is a flimsy gray area regardless.

Well said. As far as proof of ownership, I suppose we have to rely on the honer system. On the other hand, I don’t think there’s any doubt that we all own the discs, have the subscriptions, etc.

But as was said in the earlier post, as media moves from an ownership model to a subscription, and with digital ownership of these films/shows on iTunes, Amazon, and the rest, I suspect this is something that will keep coming up.

It’s very explicitly against fanedit.org’s rules, unfortunately. I don’t believe we have as strict a policy on that here.

They do allow purchasing a digital copy (e.g. from iTunes or Amazon) as far as compliance with their Own the Source rule, but simply being subscribed to a streaming service, even if that’s the only way one can access that particular content, doesn’t count. You have to be able to pay for the specific movie/show you want to edit in order to comply with their rules. For instance, Stranger Things edits weren’t allowed over there until the Target-exclusive BR release came out, and season 3 is still off limits on fanedit.org until a physical release exists.

Again, I don’t believe the rules about that here are as strict. There’s already a Mandalorian edit available here.

There’s one small thing that’s kinda bugged me about Luke’s trench run - he says he’ll be going at full throttle (implying the runs before him weren’t), but his X-Wing targeting display appears to be moving at the same speed as those of Red and Gold Leaders.

How possible would it be to fix this?

Hello there.
I just re-watched the original ANH:R. Loved it again. The way the scene in Ben’s hut plays is so much better. It feels so natural. It would be good to get rid of some of that flat lighting on the Death Star. Compared to Rogue One the beautiful sets look very uniform and a bit lacking in appropriate gravitas. Vader also seems a lot less menacing, sandwiched between Rogue One and ESB. JEJ hadn’t quite found the character yet. The thing that confuses me in every version is what the rebel pilots are actually doing in the trench run.

You have each pass of three fighters. A leader and two wingmen. The wingmen are doing something to give the leader time for his one shot. While turbo lasers fire you can imagine (though we see little evidence) that they are picking guns off to reduce risk. But when the fighters come in they sway too and fro which present a bit of a challenge for Vader and the boys but it does take them a while to take down the fighters. Maybe adding a rear facing weapon or having the fighters blast chunks off the trench to act as an obstacle would make that sequence make a bit more sense. Alternatively have rebels enter the trench behind the ties and have them fail to pick them off. It’s always kind of bugged me but much more this time. Good fortune with the continued work. Hope we have a change of regime tomorrow. As soon as my ship comes in I will send a donation. Money is really tight at the moment.

Ady, are you happy with the original look of the binary sunset? I’m actually talking about the suns in general. Latter films seem to change the look as if to make them look more epic or maybe, more realistic? Lucas spaced them further apart in ROTS, for example.

Just my $0.02.

Given the original effect was literally just an actual sunset double exposed, I don’t know that you could call anything else “more realistic”. Hyperrealistic, perhaps, but for my 2c, the Star Wars aesthetic is at its best when it is the fantastic presented in a thoroughly mundane and realistic fashion.

From a Watsonian point of view, you get spectacular sunsets when you have unsettled weather. Tatooine might have dangerous sandstorms but the photogenic clouds at the end of ROTS would hardly be typical.

Thanks for sharing that, and I hope your Christmas is rewarding.

Everything here looks great to me, especially the dusk Tatooine skylines. I was just looking forward to see what you do with the ‘look sir droids’ scene.

Decided to stick with the battle droid, eh? And R2’s blue blinking light seemed more aqua than I remember it being in other movies. I assume it’s correct as you have it but I’ll mention it anyway.

It’ll be great someday to sit down with all three of these. I still remember being wowed almost 13 years ago by this the first time.

My stance on revising fan edits.

Looks amazing, thanks Adywan! I too was curious whether the battle droid would be in there haha. The sunset shots look absolutely gorgeous, and I love the double sun!

Wait… video side of things is done for the whole film??

Great job Adywan!
As mentioned above the new canyon matte looks beautiful.
Looks as though you’ve managed to tweak R2’s trajectory after he’s received Leia’s message, he doesn’t appear to headed for the wall now.
Thanks for the clip 😃

Cheers, Paul

It looks really good!

Did you add extra beeps to R2 as he is rolling away from 3PO on Tatooine? Maybe I’m misremembering it.
