Great video! He actually says “despecialized” but also says he can’t get Disney to release the original unaltered versions.

I only posted to them so you could follow the conversations there too - by all means feel free to also / continue to discuss it in here.
(I prefer such topics to have their own threads - it makes them much easier to find and keep tabs on 😉 )

It’s better for fans to have the upper hand in this case. We have 4K OOT releases, they don’t.
Yeah, this news made me really sad. I used to be sure that we would get a release at some point, but if even big-shot directors need to use the despecialized… I just dont think its going to happen anymore 😦
I decided to add a signature
Disney has botched their handling of Star Wars in so many ways it’s unfathomable. The things they had to do to satisfy the fans were so simple, and they have managed to fail at every conceivable turn, along with some I never could have even conceived of.
New movies that respected and tastefully expanded the lore — and weren’t just aimless, poorly conceived and executed soft reboots — along with a restored release of the OUT, is all we wanted. It’s all it would have taken to make them better than how George was handling things.
But even George gave us the GOUT. It was crap, but better than NOTHING.
This truly is the worst possible outcome.
Hell, even Abrams says he doesn’t understand why they won’t release them. Does ANYBODY understand? Does anybody have any idea what they’re doing at Lucasfilm anymore?
Hopefully, if Rise of Skywalker bombs (and anything less than a billion will be a bomb for this movie), Disney will clean house at Lucasfilm and new, competent management will take over. Especially after Solo, they have to be on thin ice.
The way that JJ said it was…careful. He chose his words very carefully.
Even if that interviewer followed up, he wouldn’t have been specific.
I never believed in the past that there was something in the contract that said Disney could never release the OUT but, after that response, I’m not really so sure.

‘@jjabrams has to watch @despecialized if he wants to see the original cut. It’s INSANE.’
He’s not wrong; as he also points out… a two-time Star Wars film director has to watch a fan-made reconstruction (and a truly beautiful labour of love it is) to view the theatrical versions of the three groundbreaking and iconic films that changed how movies were made…

Pretty sad actually. I will probably never watch Star Wars77 again. I’ve largely moved on, not having seen it since the GOUT was released, but I always sort of figured Disney would do the right thing. Oh well. Looks like it’s Rogue One and The Mandalorian for me.
New movies that respected and tastefully expanded the lore — and weren’t just aimless, poorly conceived and executed soft reboots — along with a restored release of the OUT, is all we wanted.
I just wanted the OUT. Competent new films would’ve been welcome, but I would’ve been content if the saga had remained closed.
I can’t believe this was the only reporter to ask this question. But I’m also giving him a huge pat on the back for having the balls to do it.
doubleofive posted the following in the 4K restoration on Star Wars thread - though it is also worth highlighting in here too:-
I’m really not liking this defeatist attitude. We’ve been fighting for the OOT for 15+ years. I’m not about to give up now. JJ says he didn’t even understand Disney’s excuse. Which says to me they probably don’t have a valid excuse. Just that they don’t see a demand that would override “George asked us not to”.
The problem I’m seeing is an “I got mine” attitude. Disney doesn’t seem to mind the fan restorations as much as Lucas did (which is why he released the GOUT). The more we go around saying “Well, I guess it’s not coming, doesn’t matter to me because I’ve got [DEED/4KXX/VHS]”, the less likely Disney is going to spend money to give us new scans. I’m not saying we can’t have and enjoy the fan preservations, I’m saying we can’t pretend they would be ANYTHING compared to a professional scan of the uncirculated three color separation backups they have just sitting in an archive. We have to make the demand.
The fact that Disney may be depending on the fans to preserve film history is shameful. And we can’t depend on ourselves to be able to preserve it for future generations. Or even past generations. I shouldn’t have to download shady copies of the movies my parents loved to then convert into a different format to then burn on a disc and hope it works on their disc players. We as fans should not be depended on to distribute the original films.
The simple fact is that the originals are historical artifacts. We need to convince Disney of that.
I have an article written that goes through every addition & how each one ruins the movies & shows how none of them were actually done for artistic purposes. I hope when it’s published that it will be the spark that burns down the Special Editions, or at least shows that they are so flawed that we deserve to at least have the option to watch the originals.

It is good to have multiple sources on the changes, no?
I enjoy very much 13las’ ‘OT Changes’ videos - and his updated video on the Disney+ changes - though it is beneficial to also have the option to pour through and read in-depth articles as well 😃
Both are very well done and am happy and thankful we have such dedicated people willing and able to do this for the benefit of the community here and wider community in general.
It is good that 005’s work will feature and be available and preserved on such a site.
(And it looks cool too!)
Is there a thread on here where it mentions or ‘keeps track’ of people involved in Star Wars (or film in general) expressing thier views that the unaltered theatrical versions of the Original Trilogy should be made available?
I don’t mean to be crude, but it sounds like good, bad, or indifferent, we won’t get them while Lucas is still alive.

You may very well be but the site you’re giving your information to stopped being credible (or relevant) about a decade ago.

Not crude at all, just realistic.
I’d go one further & say the originals are never going to be officially restored, folks.
I respect JJ immensely for enabling the ‘Phantasm’ remaster, but whatever deal Di$ney made with Luca$ had to include a block on any such release for Star Wars - and I suspect those terms will still stand even after his death…
You may very well be but the site you’re giving your information to stopped being credible (or relevant) about a decade ago.
I have read a couple of people writing this about TDB. Can you explain the reason you feel this way? I’m curious.
This is mildly depressing but I’m not surprised.
Luke astro-projects himself to Salt Lake Planet, gets shot at by gorilla walkers, has a non-lightsaber duel with Darth Millennial, then dies of a broken heart, inspiring broom boys throughout the galaxy to get creative with their sweeping. - DuracellEnergizer
Look, no contract is so powerful it can’t be broken with enough money and willpower.
And we STILL don’t know that there even IS a contract. Based on JJ’s comments, I’m actually inclined to believe more than ever that there is NOT. If there was, you would think he would have at least said something along the lines of “contractual reasons” or “legal reasons” are what is holding the release of the OUT back. Not that he doesn’t even understand why at all. Combined with what little we’ve heard from Kennedy and Hidalgo, I’m starting to believe this somehow really is as dumb as “ReSpEcTiNg GeOrGe’S vIsIoN,” even though they legally don’t have to and could easily release the OUT without incurring any financial penalties whatsoever. (Never mind that George himself seems to care less than ever, between releasing the GOUT and giving his blessing to the public screening of unaltered prints.)
You would think the one advantage of Star Wars being at the mercy of a giant corporation only concerned with profit would be that they would steamroll over nonsense like that and give the fans what they want if it could print money for them. But no, somehow they have managed to fail miserably even at this. Which is again why my last hope is that this is more on Lucasfilm (read: Kennedy) than it is on Disney, and that with new management at Lucasfilm (which now seems inevitable), we might have a chance at seeing it. If not, screw it, I’ll just count the days to 4K80.
But it is BEYOND pathetic that we even have to rely on fans to do all this work. When I joined this site years ago, I never imagined it would be 2020 and we STILL would not have official releases of the OUT. I thought it would be 2017 (40th anniversary) at the latest. Somehow, Disney has sunk far below my absolute lowest expectations and has actually managed to surpass George when it comes to Orwellian attempts to gaslight us and erase the films we all grew up on from existence.
Again, even George gave us the GOUT. And at other times he at least ACKNOWLEDGED the existence of the old cuts and gave us a reason (bad as it was) for denying them to us. Seems like most Disney/Lucasfilm employees nowadays are more than happy to pretend they never existed at all. We have always been at war with Eastasia, and Darth Vader has always screamed “NOOOOO!”
Even without a contract Disney probably just don’t want to show these kind of changes or admit they ever existed.
