On topic, Episode IX will be arriving in just over two weeks. I of course don’t intend to rush Neverar’s hard work, but I’m also eager to see what you’ve done with the film and use it leading up to the big finale.

Aside from getting TR-8R some voiceover, might I ask what else remains on your to-do list?

In a somewhat organized list of things incomplete or entirely missing, not including timecode removal or changes requiring newly recorded dialogue:

ACT I

-Incomplete: Restructure of opening scene where Poe shoots first, then Tekka is killed. Not sure if this plays better than theatrical, so it may not be used anyway.

-Incomplete: The scene of BB-8 at Rey’s house. I may just have the BB-8 portion as a brief interlude between the interrogation and Poe’s rescue, skipping Rey’s dream.

-Not Started: The activation of the Falcon tracking device when Rey starts the Falcon for the first time in years.

ACT II

-Incomplete: Finalize new subs for Kanjiklub establishing the First Order more explicitly as a power in the galaxy.

-Not Started: Subtitle Maz Castle aliens and extend their scene.

-Not Started: Lightsaber handed to Leia in Rey’s vision. Probably won’t include due to potential use in TROS.

-Not Started: Rey sees Pirate’s ship when she runs from the castle. Another change I may not implement due to effort/payoff calculation.

-Not Started: Finn runs to Kylo’s shuttle earlier. Done 12-4-19!

-Incomplete: RogueLeader’s suggestion of a brief dream sequence before Rey’s interrogation.

-Incomplete: Clean up stray echoes in the multichannel audio for the second Snoke scene. Done 12-3-19!

ACT III

-Incomplete: Custom matte of TIE fighters starting up as Rey climbs down the wall in the hangar.

-Incomplete: Foley and flashes of light when Kylo looks towards the Oscillator from the Falcon.

-Incomplete: Foley and audio cleanup to Rey’s vision of Luke/R2 revealing the map.

-Incomplete: Improve final shot of Falcon jumping to hyperspace before the credits.

It feels like a lot, I know. But compared to the changelist on the first page, I’ve actually done most of it. The really tricky stuff would be the 4-5 areas of the film where I would like to include more dialogue, and that will probably not be ready for this workprint version. I will probably also not complete all of the above changes in time, so the workprint will omit any not yet done in time.

Nah, tons of movies use burned in subs like that with alternate audio tracks. There’s usually a set of forced subs for foreign dubs that put the other-language subs on the top of the screen so they can still be read, even though the English ones are still there.

So I’m stumped on how to implement RogueLeader’s idea for Rey’s dream. I’ve put together a vague collection of ideas, but there’s not even any voiceover:

JEDIT: Deleted Video

Some things I really want to include:

-using discarded shots of R2 waking up/Rey seeing R2’s map. I don’t know how this would segue into the dream, but it would strongly seed the idea of her fixing R2 from this early point.

-Something concerning the island tree. It’s not necessary for this film, but going forward it would give more weight to her ‘only in dreams’ comment.

Unfortunately, these two concepts don’t necessarily flow from the context of the previous scenes. Both are moderately peaceful or hopeful, whereas her experiences immediately prior to this were nothing but disturbing and violent. What the scene calls out for is a series of quick cuts to ever more anxiety-inducing music as she relives the past few hours, up until she is awakened.

One thought: The series of images and sounds builds and builds until it is unbearable, then there is silence. The island appears, and Rey approaches the tree. She reaches out for the books, and in response she sees the vision of R2 and the map revealed. Then she wakes up.

That’s my thought. I’m open to others, however. 😃

Some interesting ideas! Depending on how you play with transitioning from shot for shot, you might also consider that there is a shot of Luke placing his hand on R2 from the second TFA teaser that doesn’t have that rain transition like the final film does. I could picture you using lines like, Kylo: The map… Han It’s just a piece… Kylo: You’ve seen it. During this you could show a shot of R2. Han: went looking for the first Jedi temple… [show the island, the tree] “He walked away from it all.” The Han dialogue could also tie into Kylo mentioning him during the interrogation as well.

I do worry about making the dream too elaborate which could make it feel out of place in the movie. I imagined something briefer, like a shot of the island and a shot of the tree. I also felt when you cut to this scene, you start with the dream first and we don’t see Rey until she wakes up suddenly. So something like, “Tell us all you know.” cut to black. Fade in on island. The simplest thing might be to start with her entering frame looking at the tree, and cutting when she is reaching for the books. Simple and mysterious.

You may just have to bounce this one around a little. I’ll have to think some more on it.

Agreed, I think faster and more intense is the way to go, maybe something akin to PTSD flashbacks.

You absolute genius, thank you! That was exactly the problem I was having with the transitions.

I will definitely keep these ideas in mind. Faster, more intense. I wonder if jumping straight from Leia to the dream would read well, but there’s only one way to find out 😃

You could take a cue from ROTS, the balcony scene wipes from the balcony to a black screen, and then the dream fades in, then as the dream ends it hard cuts to Anakin waking up.

I agree. This reminds me of Anakin’s dream sequence from Revenge of the Sith. We don’t need the shot of Starkiller Base or of a sleeping Rey. Just cut to black right after Leia and then let the dream fade in.

Exactly.

On second thought, how would this work? “Tell us all you know.” And then sharp cut to black? I feel like it would need to fade to black. Like you would need a wide shot of the interior of the Resistance base or something as Leia, Poe, and Finn discuss and then fade from that into the dream sequence.

So I know faster and more intense, but…I realized that the slow zoom of the Vader mask wasn’t used yet, so it had to go in and I think it can work as a visual representation of why Rey finds the saber and its visions repelling. There is surely more to do with added sound effects, blasters and frightening things in the first part.

In the second part, I figured it was a good place to use the music originally intended for Rey’s first dream since this dream is essentially replacing it. Placing Han’s voiceover on top of the island imagery with Rey’s fearful response hits all at once what Kylo presently divines about Rey:
“You’re so lonely, so afraid to leave. At night, desperate to sleep, you imagine an ocean. I see it. I see the island. And Han Solo; you feel like he’s the father you never had…he would have disappointed you.”
“Get out of my head!”

I think for the average viewer it would be too long and confusing, maybe using quick flashes of the the saber’s history like Anakin screaming in the lava and younglings being killed, Luke’s temple burning ending with the island would be a more concrete illustration of why Rey fears taking up the weapon at the same time forshadowing the future.

Really, really good. You do great work.

The only item I maybe kinda wish it also had was a shot of the Jedi texts, since she indicates that she’s dreamt about the place.

I love the peaceful music in the latter half. If there was any place to integrate the Jedi texts, it would be along with those clips.

If it doesn’t work though, no big deal.

So actually I had another look at the scene, and actually found a way to incorporate the tree with the music:

I wanted to keep the establishing shot of Rey, so it’s been moved back to before the dream, hopefully making a smoother transition than the wipe to black.

I think that works really well.

Although I do think that the previous version you put together felt more dreamlike, particularly with the voices of Han and Kylo Ren echoing in the background.

I noticed that you also switched to doing simple dissolves in/out on those clips. I’m wondering (and this may be a terrible idea, but here it is): what if instead of fading to black between the clips, it just cut back to Rey sleeping in the chair?

  1. Scene starts, Rey establishing shot
  2. Quick cut to dream
  3. Quick cut back to Rey
  4. Quick cut back to dream

Eventually moving faster and not returning to Rey until she wakes up.

I’m just playing with ideas here. I think we may have more to work with after seeing The Rise of Skywalker.

P.S. When are you seeing the movie, by the way?

I could put them back in, but maybe just barely audible like in the Force vision. I’m finding that putting such dominant voices in the scenes makes it feel more expository and less dreamlike for me. The simple dissolves feel less muddled which probably decreases dreamlike quality, but it also feels more similar to the Force Vision where every vision was distinct from the others. I’ll give it another go for sure.

I’m seeing TROS with my girlfriend and brothers early (7:20 AM) on Saturday at the Alamo Drafthouse! We weren’t quick enough with the tickets to get a more reasonable time, but at least now I won’t have to avoid the internet like the plague that weekend. I bet most people here will see it opening day.

I think seeing it early is nice though, since afterward you guys could go discuss the movie over lunch.
