But still a nice acknowledgement of Trek’s then emerging cult popularity, Nielsen ratings be damned.

I have to wonder if Nimoy got made up just for this or they drove him over from the TOS set at Desilu/Paramount that day?

Oh damn! I was hoping we’d get to see Captain Nog on the new Picard series. 😦

I didn’t realize he was older than the character he played either. I enjoyed Nog’s arc on the series. If a Ferengi can make it in Starfleet there’s hope for everyone!

I saw a bit of a Mork and Mindy episode this morning and the interior of a flying saucer belonging to hostile female aliens who want to extract information from Mork looks familiar. This episode aired in 1979. Could it be a redressed TMP set?

M&M had a history of recycling TOS costumes and props, so this wouldn’t be without precedent.

I mostly liked TLJ, and I like Johnson’s other work.

But Hawley > Johnson any day of the week.

…damn it, now I really wanna watch Legion again.

I mean, I’ve only watched Fargo, which I like, but can’t say I agree at all (especially having just seen Knives Out).

Besides the point though. It’s an out of the box choice like Johnson that’ll be sure to shake things up.

Little bit of a risk considering he’s only done one movie and it was a bomb, but I guess the TV balances it out.

I saw Star Trek Beyond only recently and was surprised to find it to be the best of the Pineverse films. Good movie: a solid 7/10.

I’ve been thinking a lot recently about the best way to introduce a new viewer to Trek, particularly TOS. I think if you’re coming from Star Wars fandom, the most accessible way into the series in terms of tone is the trilogy of Wrath of Khan, Search for Spock, and Voyage Home, but the emotional stakes of those movies are so much more extreme if you go into them already invested in and with some sense of the history between the characters. To that end, I’ve wanted to come up with a list of five TOS episodes to use as a primer for the film trilogy. “Space Seed” and “Journey to Babel” seem obvious because they introduce Khan and Sarek. “Amok Time” is good because it sets up some of the Vulcan culture stuff that comes up in SfS. “The City on the Edge of Forever” deserves a spot just because it’s an absolute series highpoint. What about the fifth? My first thought was “Balance of Terror” just because it’s a personal favorite, but then it occurred to me that Mark Lenard showing up again as a Romulan might muddy the waters for a new viewer. What do you folks think?

I actually made a list of six episodes that I’m going to use on a friend later this month.

  1. Balance of Terror
  2. The Galileo Seven
  3. Space Seed
  4. The City on the Edge of Forever
  5. The Ultimate Computer
  6. Amok Time

I wanted to find the best episodes with a low cheese-factor, since the whole reason my friend has been turned away from watching TOS is its corny nature. He actually likes TNG, but hasn’t given TOS a chance. I told him that he would like the TOS movies, but that he has to watch some episodes first. As you mention, the emotional stakes would be higher, in addition to the fact that TMP isn’t a good introduction to the characters, and I want him to watch that too.

“Balance of Terror” and “The Ultimate Computer” are on the list not only because they are two of my favorites, but also because they contain similarities to TWOK, so they help be a lead-in to the movie’s action, and the theme of Kirk feeling outdated.

I included “The City on the Edge of Forever” “Space Seed” and “Amok Time” for the reasons you mention. But “Amok Time” really only gives you Vulcan culture, and not a whole lot of Spock himself, and that’s why “The Galileo Seven” is in there.

I wasn’t too worried about introducing Sarek, but that may change if he’s willing to watch more episodes. Depending on how much time he wants to invest in the show, I would also put “The Doomsday Machine” in the ‘must watch’ category, as it’s another of my favorites.

SONIC RACES THROUGH THE GREEN FIELDS.
THE SUN RACES THROUGH A BLUE SKY FILLED WITH WHITE CLOUDS.

“The Galileo Seven” is a great choice! It really sets up the Spock/Bones dynamic in a way that will enhance the movies. I think that’ll be my fifth if I ever get the chance to actually do this - I’ve got a couple friends back home who might be interested, so maybe around the holidays.

“The Doomsday Machine” has a lot of cool parallels with TMP (not to mention Decker’s dad), so that would be a good one if you’re including the movie in your marathon; just don’t put them back to back or else it might get a little monotonous.

In addition to Sarek, I think “Journey to Babel” contains a lot of the background about how unusual it was for Spock to leave Vulcan and join Starfleet, which might provide some context for the Kolinahr stuff in TMP and some of the other Vulcan bits in SFS and the beginning of TVH. The character dynamics are much more important than background info at this stage, though, so I don’t think it’s essential if you’d rather show something else.

Those are great points. I’d be putting everything in chronological (production) order, just for clarification. I hope my friend will be willing to watch eight episodes because I really think it’s important to get a full picture of the characters and their history for the movies to have a great importance to the viewer.

For sticking to a solid five episodes, I think your choices are great. And even then, long-time fans such as us most likely weren’t introduced to the series with nearly this much attention to detail, so as long as a few good shows are picked, new viewers should be in good hands. Even something like “The Changeling” wouldn’t be a bad choice, though not as action packed as other episodes. Or heck, comedic shows like “I, Mudd” and “Shore Leave” would be good for people with a taste for corny fun. I think the best episodes would sometimes depend on the person being introduced.

Oh, I also forgot to mention that I really wanted to put “Where No Man Has Gone Before” on the list, as in my mind it’s one of the episodes that best personifies the series as a whole (which it was supposed to do, being a pilot after all). The only problem is that the full cast wasn’t in place, and so you don’t get the complete character dynamic. It’s just too different to be a good intro for new viewers.

Star Trek: The Triple Timeline Theory

Honestly, this is all but true by this point. The notion that TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT, & STD all take place in the same universe, albeit through a glass darkly, just doesn’t hold water.

Just watched this. I like the way it fixes the chronology of events in ENT and DIS, but I suspect the idea that the Kelvin timeline spun off of the First Contact timeline instead of the Prime one is going to be debunked pretty thoroughly by Picard. Which I’m fine with; I’ve always been perfectly satisfied to take the Doylist view and leave it at that as far as aesthetic differences between series are concerned.

Shame me all you want but arguably if you’re introducing a SW fan to Trek, the best entry point is the 09 film. Depends on the person though, as always.
