Just for fun, get Garrick Hagon to play his grandfather or something. 😃

Chewie’s gonna be in this, I bet. The fact Ben seems very familiar with him in A New Hope seems like something a little too good to pass up in a miniseries format.

Also, wasn’t one of the early rumors that his “co-star” was going to be Artoo? Or maybe it’ll be R5-D4.

IIRC, the novel mentioned he could speak the Wookiee language like a native. He certainly seems to be conversing with Chewie at the bar. I don’t see how he could run into Chewie prior to ANH and not encounter Solo though. Other Wooks are possible. Always wanted to see more of Tarrful.

Ben’s familiarity with Mos Eisely means he must have spent some time there or visited frequently. The Cantina is a perfect venue for other characters who are just passing through to appear. I’ve imagined Ben hitting an emotional low point early in his exile and perhaps drinking a little too much.

I was thinking that too, that it would be weird to have Chewie and not have Han around, but I believe the notion of a “life debt” or anything like that has been wiped from canon, hasn’t it? Chewie doesn’t have to be tethered to Han all the time. A one or two-episode guest stint could work, I think.

I wonder if this show is going to be the melding of two different Star Wars Story ideas that got mooted when the decision was ultimately made to turn spinoff movies into Disney+ content instead. There was a Mos Eisley/Fett movie being worked on with James Mangold, and Stephen Daldry’s Kenobi movie. I wonder if those two projects are now going to become this one. A Kenobi-centered show, set in the hive of scum and villainy, about a crazy old wizard bumping into low-rent criminals while trying to maintain a low profile.

Honestly, after mulling over the potential for a Kenobi series for awhile now, it’s kind of hard to imagine it as a movie anymore. In my mind this should be a low-key serialized miniseries, without a lot of characters and locations - mostly just focused on Obi/Ben and his life. That kind of more interior and gradual sort of storytelling tends to play much better on the small screen when it comes to sci-fi/fantasy. A theatrical feature might give the temptation for giant blockbuster level shenanigans, which probably wouldn’t be very fitting for this story.

I think the Daldry hiring pointed pretty clearly towards making it more of a low-key drama than anything else Star Wars has been. The Mos Eisley elements don’t need to be action packed or blockbustery if they do get introduced, either.

I don’t think it should be deathly serious, because Ben Kenobi is a wry sort of guy, and the show should have a sense of humor that matches. Basically, a Star Wars show that feels a little like Justified would be pitch perfect, to me.

I’d rather he befriend another Wookiee than Chewbacca.
Shooting from the hip, I would also hope that we wouldn’t even hear the name Obi-Wan at all, except if we get some Qui-Gon ghostly content. There shouldn’t be anyone interacting with him that the name should even come up. Rebels notwithstanding, he should be genuinely settled into the identity of Ben, such that the mention of his old name in ANH sincerely stirs something up within him. I think that was a real fuckup on their part with that one. But not any worse than a great deal of the PT’s wanton disregard for the organic implications the OT had about the past.

“Obi-Wan Kenobi… Obi-Wan. Now, that’s a name I’ve technically not heard for a long time. Not even last Summer when I had heatstroke and dueled with Satan in the desert.”

“I haven’t gone by the name of Obi-Wan since, oh, I guess the time I thought I killed your father just a few hours before you were born. I mean, I don’t think anyone used my first name the rest of the day before I left to come here, but that’s asking for some very specific recall at this point. I don’t even think Satan called me anything but ‘Kenobi’ last Summer when we fought on my front yard.”

My point is that maintaining the technical disuse of his first name does not satisfy his portrayal in ANH, and that I hope this series does the right thing in isolation even though Rebels (and even ROTS) blew that door off its hinges.

My stance on revising fan edits.

I have wondered if he somehow slipped into the identity of someone who actually was a hermit named Ben, who may have died unbeknownst to the locals, and had very little contact with anyway, and had a cozy little hovel beyond the Dune Sea. 😃

If the real Ben was killed by Tusken Raiders, it would add a dimension to how they freak out when Kenobi appears waving his arms and making scary noises.

I guess in respect to how the saga ended up its fair that he has the reaction to hearing that name due simply to the fact that Luke is the one saying it.

I agree with all of that. For me, Ben was his best in 77 being the experienced voice in the story. I don’t really remember TPM and never saw the other two prequels, so I don’t know how he’s portrayed after 77.

This could be really interesting as a sort of calmer and more cerebral entry into the TV side. McGregor looks the part now.

There’s room for all sorts of adventures even off planet and all the while under the risk of blowing his cover and attracting the unwanted attention of the Empire.

‘Obi-Wan Kenobi: McGregor Kept the Series a Secret Longer Than You Think’:-

https://www.cbr.com/obi-wan-kenobi-mcgregor-kept-series-secret-longer/

'While Disney+'s Obi-Wan Kenobi series was only announced in August, it has actually been in development for quite some time.

In an interview with Men’s Journal, star Ewan McGregor revealed that he has know about the series for the last four years! “It’s a fucking massive relief,” he said. “Because for four years, I’ve been having to lie to people about it.”

McGregor also dropped some other nuggets, saying that the series won’t film until next summer and that it will consist of six hour-long episodes. As for story details, he revealed that “The storyline sits between Episode III and Episode IV," right after the collapse of the Jedi Order. McGregor hinted that the slaughter will be central to Obi-Wan’s arc, but stopped himself before revealing any more new information.

The Obi-Wan series is one of many Star Wars TV shows Disney+ has in the works. The Mandalorian is set to premiere on Nov. 12, the same day the streaming service launches, and an untitled series centered around Rouge One’s Cassian Andor is in development.

Written by Hossein Amini, directed by Deborah Chow and starring Ewan McGregor, the Obi-Wan Kenobi series will air on Disney+. No release date has yet been announced.’

A salutary reminder that actors are liars and secret-keepers by trade.

Personally I wouldn’t mind if there was a fair amount of story appropriate time jumping in the series, a lot of us probably would enjoy Qui-Gon as a force ghost but I also like the idea of limited flashbacks, even playing with the ages considering that’s basically the new CGI trope these days.

My ideal version would be old Ben, the wandering Jedi, roaming the desert in hiding, maybe caught between the dilemma of helping another or exposing himself to the new Empire on high alert to track him down, interspersed with reflective moments ruminating over his past with some familiar faces, some prequel redemption.

Sort of like…El Camino?

I fully expect it will be something akin to an HBO show meets the opening books of The Last of The Jedi series. Either that or it will be like The Fugitive where old space wizard man shows up to fix the problem of the week but has to remain hidden away for fear of exposing his guarded secrets.

When they write “beard” I’d imagine they’re referring to something similar to Captain Tarpals’ mustache-tendril-thingies.

I’m too lazy to read through both wookieepedia entries on gungans just to check this, but I do recall reading somewhere that those things are basically gungan facial “hair.”
