‘Star Wars’ Shocker: Marvel’s Kevin Feige Developing New Movie for Disney

Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy “is pursuing a new era in ‘Star Wars’ storytelling, and knowing what a die-hard fan Kevin is, it made sense for these two extraordinary producers to work on a ‘Star Wars’ film together,” Walt Disney Studios co-chairman Alan Horn tells The Hollywood Reporter.

To the surprise of no one, Kevin Feige is a huge Star Wars fan. It might surprise many, however, that the Marvel Studios chief is going to be developing a Star Wars movie as Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy makes new plans for a wave of projects set in the universe, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Feige had discussed a foray into the Star Wars universe in a late summer meeting with Kennedy and studio co-chairmen Alan Horn and Alan Bergman, sources say. In response to a query from THR, Walt Disney Studios co-chairman and chief creative officer Horn said, “We are excited about the projects Kathy and the Lucasfilm team are working on, not only in terms of Star Wars but also Indiana Jones and reaching into other parts of the company including Children of Blood and Bone with Emma Watts and Fox. With the close of the Skywalker Saga, Kathy is pursuing a new era in Star Wars storytelling, and knowing what a die-hard fan Kevin is, it made sense for these two extraordinary producers to work on a Star Wars film together.”

Good news 😃 More Star Wars from people who love Star Wars!
Does anyone know if the film for cinema or Disney+?

I don’t know if I should be happy about this. The last thing further SW movies need is the “Marvel flavour”. It already killed 7, 8 and Solo for me. At least we can all agree that he would respect old characters more than Johnson/Kennedy did.

At this point I don’t think anyone knows anything.

Never safe to assume Star Wars fans will agree on anything (for instance, in this case, I do not).

It seems to me like it’s a theatrical feature. I can’t imagine you’d team up Kennedy and Feige on a project and not have it go to theaters.

I’m actually all for this, if, they move the hell the way from the main saga timelines. Between this and Rian’s trilogy, and I’m begging for someone to steer us into movies not about the Skywalkers, other iconic characters, and Empire/Rebellion conflicts.

Kathleen Kennedy says the Kevin Feige project never really got developed, “it is not an abandoned project, it just didn’t happen”, but also added that if he did come up with something she would be all ears:

Oh, that is bit disappointing. Maybe something will happen in the future, but I will not hold my breath on that.

Me too.

The story of this is even more confusing now as this article points out:

Kevin Feige Star Wars Movie Mess Just Got Even More Confusing at Den Of Geek

Kathleen Kennedy did say intthe IGN inverview: “Kevin Feige’s project was something announced in the press, or I suppose fandom. But there was nothing. Nothing ever got developed. We never discussed an idea,”

But it was Disney’s then-chief creative office Alan Horn who broke the news that Kevin Feige was working on a Star Wars film in 2019:

“We are excited about the projects Kathy and the Lucasfilm team are working on, not only in terms of Star Wars but also Indiana Jones and reaching into other parts of the company including Children of Blood and Bone with Emma Watts and Fox. With the close of the Skywalker Saga, Kathy is pursuing a new era in Star Wars storytelling, and knowing what a die-hard fan Kevin is, it made sense for these two extraordinary producers to work on a Star Wars film together,"

and the writer for the Feige’s Star Wars film also said this in 2022:-

“It’s coming along, it’s nice to have some time to focus on it. And it’s fun to get to do something that feels fresh and original, and I’m excited to work with Kevin again, and with the team at Lucasfilm. And I love Star Wars. So it’s a blast.”

“I’m writing away,” Waldron also told Variety last May. “I’m enjoying having the freedom on that to do something that’s not necessarily a sequel or anything. It maybe has a little bit less of a — it just doesn’t have a bunch of TV shows and movies that you’re servicing on top of it, the way I did with Doctor Strange. So it’s nice. It feels like a different exercise."

Maybe the script for Feige’s Star Wars film came to nothing in the end? Or Kathleen Kennedy did not see the script that was written? It does all seem weird for her to say “But there was nothing. Nothing ever got developed.”

Very strange.

It was even announced on the official Star Wars YouTube channel.

Seems like the left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing. It still amazes me how things can be getting botched this bad. After the mostly negative reception of sequels upon their completion, you’d think LucasFilm would be more on top of things and what they choose to do and release to the public.

The fact that Kathleen Kennedy, the HEAD of LucasFilm, hasn’t seen the script/plans for a movie that was announced and reported on is just baffling. At this point, LucasFilm just needs a complete restructure from the top down. Kathy needs to go and there needs to be someone like Feige at Marvel that has a clear vision and actually cares about the franchise.

It seems like LucasFilm will continue to throw things to the wall and see what will stick. They have more canceled movies and shows than successful releases at this point and given Kathy’s lack of knowledge of this project… this will 100% be another canceled LucasFilm project.

From Feige himself:

Kevin Feige Confirms His ‘Star Wars’ Movie Is Not Moving Forward, from the Hollywood Reporter

'Kevin Feige is no longer headed to a galaxy far, far away. The Marvel Studios boss, who was developing a Star Wars feature to produce, is moving on to other things as he focuses on the dozens of films and TV shows on his plate in the MCU.

When asked if his Star Wars feature was happening, he told Entertainment Tonight simply: “No.” It was part of a larger interview at the Las Vegas premiere of The Marvels Tuesday.’

“Don’t tell anyone… but when ‘Star Wars’ first came out, I didn’t know where it was going either. The trick is to pretend you’ve planned the whole thing out in advance. Throw in some father issues and references to other stories - let’s call them homages - and you’ve got a series.” - George Lucas
