Some good news re the environment…

Earth’s ozone layer is healing, UN report says

… the upper ozone layer above the Northern Hemisphere should be completely repaired in the 2030s and the gaping Antarctic ozone hole should disappear in the 2060s, according to a scientific assessment released Monday at a conference in Quito, Ecuador. The Southern Hemisphere lags a bit and its ozone layer should be healed by mid-century.

This is good news, but not surprising. The Ozone layer’s depletion was caused by relatively specific compounds, and limiting/outlawing them meant they’re not added to the atmosphere to ruin the Ozone layer. It helps that the Ozone layer appears to be self regenerating.

Glad you enjoyed those links. I feel they help show the problem with Climate Change: There are large powers invested in ignoring it, and there’s only so much we as individuals can do to stop it without radical change.

Fully agree, I hope that at the personal and local levels there is enough happening (and publicity and awareness) to help make that pressure count on the larger powers - if not now, then for the next generation - or hopefully sooner.

I feel like it’s missing another point as to why there’s a lower birth rate, at least for people my age: It’s just not really feasible in this economy. Raising children, even one, is expensive, and young people are finding it harder to meet those costs.

With the global Coronavirus outbreak there are a lot of questions being raised about international travel and there is also many environmentalists cheering on airlines collapsing whilst people are about to be quarantined at home all spending their own energy bills, cooking most of their own food whilst communal activities subside.

To have a lot of people sitting about at home spending their own energy bills and doing little communal activity is the “WORST” possible thing for the environment.

If people have to resort to driving to get to another country with say 1-6 people in a car it will still be much “WORSE” for the environment than an airline carrying 300 - 600 people.

Whilst also a health emergency that is probably linked in some way to how we treat our world… It has started to raise a lot of questions about what we need and what we don’t need and what we can do without and what we should keep and how things should change.

It presents an opportunity to do things differently in the world we live in, but we also must be careful that we don’t go too far and destroy social interaction completely and deny the opportunity to meet others around the world.

We all still share this world and we are all connected and whatever it is, by our nature we pass things on to others weather that be a virus (Health) economic issues (I don’t buy something making someone else poorer) and social (anger and fear are dangerous also for the environment).

We must remember that none of us are truly alone and we are all connected and are all affected by things no matter if it is good or bad or just is.

There is no doubt we must change the world we live in for the better of the environment but it is a case of how much is actually good and how much is actually bad.

Let’s hope none of those people ever need a donated heart or kidney rushed to them or a loved one by jet.

It’s just getting crazy out there. Subway stopped using trays, and give you your sandwich wrapped to go even if you’re eating it there. I saw a line at one local supermarket just to get in. A special Wookiee wagging finger of shame™ to the jackhole in front of line smoking when nobody behind him can flee his cancer stick emissions.
Why the hell are people hoarding toilet paper? Makes even less here as there’s a Proctor & Gamble plant in my town that makes the stuff 24/7. What I find really odd is the local CVS pharmacy is also sold out of E-cigs and vaping supplies. Figure that one out!

I think it is a serious problem this virus… The major problem with it is that you can have contracted it and not even know you have got it. Then it can spread to elderly and if they have pre-existing condition like COPD, Diabetes, cancer or some other serious illness it can kill those people very quickly they can not fight it and also the virus is very contagious.

Then before you know it the hospitals are over run. People are in panic mode and a lot of people are losing work due to no demand for social interaction Sports, conferences, exhibitions, travel and tourism and restaurants. It’s not just a Health problem it is a hammer blow to the economy which now simply is not functioning as it should because of Banned activity and little demand.

Although the first reported cases were in February in the UK there are people that think they had it already in December and early January going by the symptoms and a lot of my colleages work in Events where potentially Chinease will show up to exhibit or even tourism in London so it could have been around far sooner than is being reported. So it could be that the journalism now spreading panic might be a bit late and slow if this is the case and although they are masqurading as purveyors of what you need to know they actually were asleep when we already had the problem; But it’s also the nature of the virus.
