@towne32 Can you add hashes to the original post for verifying file-integrity, like Harmy does?

File Name: Star.Wars.Despecialized.Edition.v2.5.mkv

CRC32: 42A67CC6

MD5: E52CC005E48931EF3DF336361DD1A142

SHA-1: 6CA73976E347CD6791DC31B4FCC758F0E5AD265E

SHA-256: 31C4BA98D4A14A71B6DA13830F1C3C508CBF93C89A348D382F76070A23588D6B

I dont have the files on hand, but if people can post and confirm, I would be happy to add them.

Here are some checksums taken from HanDuet’s “Supplementary Guide: File Verification”:

File Name: Star.Wars.Despecialized.Edition.v2.7.mkv
CRC-32: 86C303FB

SHA-1: F7DAF6EB6292F867D18DBFB1C55C19A13450C696

A link to HanDuet’s full guide can be found in the first post of Harmy’s thread:

PicSurge doesn’t seem to work anymore. Can you please put the comparisons elsewhere?

Hi, gang.

Combing through here to see what I’m doing wrong…

Yes, I’ve read the guide: https://goo.gl/1WGHBA

And I seem to have found the SW 2.7 MKV on ulozto.net.

I even downloaded a file that seems to be named appropriately, according to HanDuet’s file verification supplement. (https://goo.gl/mI0qtC)

Meanwhile, there are three .mkv files up with the same name, only they are sized at 4.3, 4.3, and 4.6GB, rather than the 19.9 as specified in HanDuet’s supplement.

The video that I’ve watched just to drool over it before I can get it home is absolutely beautiful. I am amazed at the love, sweat and tears that have been put into these, and am eternally grateful that I can have this amazing piece of film history. I am also sure it will be light years better than my theatrical DVDs, although I’d have to compare them one after the other.

I am curious if I should be concerned about the size? I don’t have any checksum software at my disposal, and this version may be good enough for my purposes.

More importantly, to find episodes V and VI, if I use the search terms on HanDuet’s introductory guide, it does not yield the .mkv files or even any .rar files, but rather a bunch of .par2 files.

What am I missing?

I feel as though I’ve followed all the bread crumbs but am still not finding the grail.

Thanks again to all of you for all that you do. It’s a great community here.

Welcome!

Sadly, nearly all the manual/multipart files on Uloz for Harmy’s Despecialized Editions are dead. Checking Harmy’s posts (click on a user’s name to see their post history) reveals that he was searching for a replacement host in May & June, but I do not think he has uploaded the files to a new site yet.

The mkv files you have found on Uloz look suspicious/unofficial to me; I suspect they are re-encoded and heavily compressed.

Fortunately, some kind soul appears to have uploaded the most recent mkv files for all three films on Usenet within the last year. Search for “despecialized” on NZBKing. If you haven’t used Usenet before, I recommend getting a free account from the “free-usenet” provider along with NZBGet software (also free).

JEDIT: See this guide to Usenet.

Thank you, Bluto!

It’s good to see I’m not crazy. (Well, I didn’t imagine that the files are gone, at least.)

Thanks for poking around for me. Usenet and NZB are also a whole new world for me, so that’ll take some research and learning on my end. Totally worth it, though.

I also need to decide on a playback medium, since my system at home has multiple options.

This is a huge help to my quest. Thanks again for the lifeline.

+1 to the solution found by Bluto. I was able to verify all of the checksums of the versions that I located on use-net. If you want faster speeds, I would recommend checking out the free trials offered by premium use-net services.

Hello,

Would anyone happen to know the answer to these questions?
(re: English 5.1/Stereo Audio tracks on SW v2.7)

First, I don’t find any audio track notes past SW v2.5. In v2.5 notes I find:
• TRACK 1) 5.1 1977 70mm six track mix @ 640Kbps
• TRACK 2) 2.0 1977 35mm stereo mix @ 224Kbps

I am converting with Subler for Mac > mkv to m4a
During conversion, I am removing all tracks, except two:
• Home theater (5.1)
• Stereo devices (2.0) (iPhone, iPad, etc that can’t read the 5.1 track)

My questions are:

  1. Are the specs for v2.7 the same as v2.5?
  2. For the stereo track, would it be better to downmix the 5.1 track (@ 640Kbps) to 2.0? Or just use the 2.0 (@ 224Kbps)?

But really, the Kbps numbers are just one factor. What is the origin of each of these tracks?
I do not know the differences between either track. Did the 35mm release have a different mix than the 70mm release (sound effects, music mix, etc). If so, what are the differences?

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Jas

The 5.1 is recreated from several sources so if you need a 2.0 track, stick with the one that is already 2.0. It is already the matrixed Dolby Stereo that can be decoded into 4.0 tracks by any pro-logic decoder. I personally like doing the same thing, but I always keep the mono soundtrack as it is so unique.

Hi @yotsuya! Please tell me what you like about the mono track? I would not have thought to include the mono track in the final squished file. I have heard it is as close as you can get to the 1977 theater experience. (I saw STAR WARS in 1977 at the Chinese Theater on Hollywood Blvd!) Other than that fact, what appeals to you about it?

Where can I read about the audio-specific things you mention? I haven’t been able to find detailed track notes.

Thanks

Bluto’s comprehensive and quality ’Guide to Downloading Projects from Usenet’ thread, in the How-To’s and Technical Discussions section of the site, may also be of interest for those members looking to acquire Harmy’s Despecialized Editions - or TN1’s 4K OT Preservation Projects.

solkap’s ’NJVC Custom Blu-ray Set of Harmy’s Despecialized Editions now available on Mega’ thread - with helpful and concise step-by-step guide - is a great option on how to acquire this particular Set.

I thought the above is also worth mentioning in here to help people find another method of obtaining projects on here.

Those are truly superb guides Bluto and solkap! Well done and thank you both 😃

Indeed mate - both are very helpful Guides which very likely took considerable time, effort and dedication to come up with.

Massive respect and appreciation to both Bluto and solkap - and also to towne32, of course 😃

Hello, I followed the ultimate introductory guide:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1yLsvexWBVM8IYSGopKuSfsGk5YIgCwQWd23bqb5ryD4/pub

And pulled all the SW DEED v2.7 MKV files using FreeRapid Downloader. I tried to use 7-zip to unpack the rar’s (starting with part01.rar) but got an error shortly into the extraction process:
Data Error (cyclic redundancy check)

The extraction process then hung up in 7-zip. Is this common? Is there anything I can do to fix this?

EDIT
If anyone has same issue in future, part03.rar was corrupted (try copying all files to another drive and corrupted file will fail to transfer). I re-downloaded it, and full extraction worked without issue.

PicSurge doesn’t work and I can’t go through a thousand comments, but I thought you should know that a dewback changes color from green to brown. It’s both distracting and obvious, so I assume it’s something that happened to be in the original release and was intentionally kept. But just in case it was an oversight, here is what I’m talking about: https://i.imgur.com/SZ2VNV3.png

Hey there, pretty new here, but need some help.

I might just be going blind but I cant find a link to the v2.7 MKV files anywhere. Have I missed it somewhere in the initial post?

No, because links aren’t allowed to be posted openly per forum rules. But it looks like you got it by your post in the other thread! 😃

I think for the final release of Despecialized Ultra Hd release would be amazing

Upscaling some of the sources to 4K would be extremely difficult. We should all be content with 1080p for now.

Damn right. ✊

This thread has details of Harmy’s versions (the “Despecialized Editions”) with towne32’s colour correction for Star Wars v2.7, but not Adywan’s edits (look for “Revisited” threads).
