Speculation…

Shmi “There was no father. I carried him, I gave birth, I raised him. I can’t explain what happened.”

Palpatine using abilities “some consider to be unnatural” conjured this child of the force within Shmi (a random slave of no importance). Palpatine is secretly Anakin Skywalker’s father (and acts like it throughout the PT).

Palpatine - having survived his fall down the Death Star chasm (much like Luke survived the Cloud City chasm - it rhymes!) used those same abilities to create Rey, again within a random junker of no importance. Palpatine is Rey father, she’s of the same line.

Seems at least possible?

Rey would have only been conceived a decade or so after the Battle of Endor. I think it’s more likely that Palpatine won’t literally appear but rather that our heroes will be dealing with some kind of contingency plan he set up before he died. After all, the books and comics have been dropping breadcrumbs to that effect since Shattered Empire and the Aftermath trilogy.

Anyway, I hate the title and I’m more confused by the trailer than anything. JJ’s doing his old gleefully cryptic schtick again, and I feel like I still just don’t have enough to go on to make any kind of judgement beyond “nice to see Billy Dee flying the Falcon again” or “Finn’s new costume is cool”. Would it kill Abrams/Kennedy to have given a three-sentence summary at the panel so that I could have some vague idea of what the stakes are here?

I agree, it might not be Palpatine in physical form… but we haven’t yet seen the Sith equivalent of a Force Ghost have we?

A Sith Wraith perhaps? (SW has never been shy pinching bits and bobs from other mythology and that would be rather Sauron like).

Looks good. Hopefully it finds a middle ground between 7 and 8 so everyone’s happy.

I do hope that Palpatine’s return is written really well for people to accept his return and role in The Rise of Skywalker. As someone who generally does not like fan service, I do trust Lucasfilm with what they’ve been doing with the sequel trilogy.

Looks like they couldn’t help themselves lifting a little from Lawrence of Arabia while they were shooting at Wadi Rum.

I think the significance of Palpatine is greatly overstated. It’s possible that he’s just be part of a Sith artifact macguffin that’s in the Death Star wreckage.

Digging this shot of Ms Tran. I’m really hoping she has a more substantial, adult roll in this. She looks great here and appears to have a more important roll in-universe.

Glad they did something different with her hair, she looks like a different person in this photo. And it’s fitting that you should use the term “adult”, as I thought her character in TLJ did come off as somewhat puerile.

I was fine with Rose in The Last Jedi. I think making her character act more mature is good, as it shows character growth and maturity.

It could simply by a cameo by McDiarmid as one of the sentinel droids; https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Sentinel_(Contingency)

Though if they end up visiting the wreck of the DS2 I think some kind of Force Vision makes the most sense.

The only canon appearance of a Dark Side Force “Ghost”, to my knowledge, was in the Clone Wars series. And that wasn’t really a proper Force Ghost, but more of an after-image in the Force.

So far the new canon has been avoiding Dark Side Force Ghosts, but they could probably change the already pretty vague rules if Abrams wants a proper Force Ghost.

Guess who’s back!

Since they’re apparently going to visit the wreck of the DS2, I’m guessing Palpatine might appear as either a Force Ghost, or more likely, as some kind of Force Vision. Might be similar to the Thrawn trilogy where the death of the Emperor left behind an imprint in the Force.

Or Lucasfilm could just be messing with us in the trailer. Wouldn’t technically be the first time.

Both Death Stars blew up. There was concept art for The Force Awakens of the second Death Star underwater, but they scrapped it. It seems like they could potentially be returning to those ideas, but it also seems a bit odd because the Death Star blew up in space.

Well, it blew up orbiting Endor. So it’s not out of the realm of possibility that fragments fell to the moon’s surface. Which would also suggest that the forest setting that was shown in a couple of the promo photos might indeed be the forests of Endor.

There is no way that the planet the station is on is Endor. It looks like a different planet.

According to the two Ewok movies, Endor has other types of terrain…

JEDIT:Debris from the explosion could also have landed on another planet in the system?

Agreed. It would be so shitty if she was cut, or her role reduced significantly, due to the B.S. backlash against her. She was great in the part, any issues people had with the character were from the writing (I was fine with it except the “saving what we love” line). Especially when I saw way too many people saying stuff like “Thank God they got rid of her, she was horrible!” when she wasn’t on the leaked poster.

Could the planet in the trailer be Endor proper instead of the sanctuary moon? I’ve always assumed Endor was a gas giant, but I don’t think there’s currently anything in the cannon to support or refute that.

Anyway, the more I think about it, the more convinced I am that part of the plot will involve our heroes racing against Kylo and the Knights of Ren to find some sort of Emperor-related macguffin. Maybe some trap that Palestine set up decades ago with an especially long fuse goes off and everyone believes there’s some means of stopping and/or controlling it somewhere in the Death Star II wreckage.

(That’s my theory as long as we’re limiting speculation to the Death Stars we’ve already seen, that is. I remember a couple more kicking around in Legends, and I wouldn’t be gobsmacked to find out there was a heretofore unseen prototype left over in canon too)

EC Henry: speculations on Palpatine in ep. IX
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBELV0uxyo8

This is pretty much how I hope they end up using Palpatine in the film. It would be a lot more powerful than simply bringing him back to life, it could potentially add a lot of Rey’s development, and it would be a genuinely god way to bring all three trilogies together n a thoughtful manner.

Endor Prime is canonically a Gas Giant, as seen in Battlefront II.

There’s a boatload of concept art in the Art of The Force Awakens book that would suggest it’s the Death Star II, assuming they used that discarded storyline from the earlier film as a jumping off point. I’d post some of it if I was on my laptop instead of my phone. Maybe later, unless someone else does it first.

What would they be looking for in the remains of the DS1? Obi Wan’s saber?

I think we can acknowledge that the Ewok movies are no longer canon, and Disney doesn’t consider them canon either. But they could pull from old forgotten material such as this.
