Han - Solo Movie ** Spoilers ** — Page 103

Yeah, while obviously a big portion of it did have to do with how they marketed it, it goes to show just how big of a fault it was to not it back. Even if there hadn’t been reshoots, it still would have flopped because that was always the intended release schedule. And from what I understand, they didn’t hold back on marketing because of the reshoots, but because they didn’t want it to overlap with The Last Jedi home video release advertising.

Now that we’ve talked about it, it makes me want to make a fan trailer just to try to illustrate what I mean by an unclear thesis statement for the film’s marketing. Maybe it can be the trailer for an eventual fan edit I might do, too.

what potentially really exacerbated that issue was that we just saw Harrison actually play him not three years before. So I’m sure a lot of people didn’t feel the urgency when they just recently got their fix of Han Solo but featuring the genuine article.

I mentioned that very thing a while back. Two versions/castings of the same character so close together is a very tough sell in a fan base as volitile as Star Wars. Particularly when one of them is the iconic original.

Not helping matters at all was it coming only months after what may be the most polarizing film in the franchise. I think there was considerable fan backlash that transferred to a lack of attendance at the box office, possibly in protest. The film’s troubled production didn’t help either and it may have served to further alienate some fans’ anti-Disney thoughts. I think the box office results were a perfect storm of protest, anger, and apathy.

If they had gone with a less is more approach, they may have had a better result. There was too much going on and it almost made Han a secondary character in parts. Ki’ra could have been the McGuffin to get Han invested in bettering himself and one day returning, but without having her being such a main character. He comes back, she’d been killed long ago, or just no longer a part of that world, or she moved on without him. He then continues on in his life of crime, now energized with a fresh dose of pessimism about people in general.

Leave out a big-role Ki’ra, leave out Maul (eye roll), and end the film with a set-up of Han’s meeting and subsequent friendship with Lando as the second film. Leave audiences wanting more, not feeling exhausted from too much.

That was something Nolan did perfectly at the end of Batman Begins. Gordon tells Batman about a criminal who leaves a clue at every crime, hands him a joker playing card in an evidence bag, Batman says “thanks, I’ll check it out”, roll the credits. Simple, but enough to leave the audience speculating and interested in how they’ll meet and interact.

Solo may not have performed as expected, but is it really a failure? I mean, it’s at the 10th place in the 2018 box office

Han: Hey Lando! You kept your promise, right? Not a scratch?
Lando: Well, what’s left of her isn’t scratched. All the scratched parts got knocked off along the way.
Han (exasperated): Knocked off?!

Well, Solo’s budget was estimated to be around $275-300 million, so it didn’t even make that back with the domestic box office alone.
According to here, its worldwide box office was $390 million, combined with its project home release sales, you get a total of around $445 million.

Even Rogue One broke 1 billion at the box office alone. So Solo did not really perform well, not even close to the other anthology film.

Its performance definitely requires Disney/Lucasfilm to consider a few things. Did Solo underperform based on scheduling alone? Would it have gotten closer to that $1 billion if they had just pushed it to December, or was the story just not that much of a draw? If it was the latter, they will probably be more careful about which films they want to make theatrically. Apparently they were working on a “Tales from Mos Eisley” kind of film, but if Han Solo wasn’t enough of a draw, they need to figure out what attracts audience to a Star Wars project.

That’s why I personally think the success or failure of the Mandalorian is going to be crucial to Lucasfilm’s future. I think the tech Jon Favreau is using is pioneering. It could lower the cost of production for these visual effects heavy projects, paving the way for future Star Wars projects.

I’ve heard it described this way, but we could think of this coming winter season as the end of Phase 1. Once Episode IX is released, Star Wars will be moving on to brand new stories, and the Mandalorian will be the first of many such stories that have fewer ties to the Original Trilogy, which I think is necessary for the franchise’s growth.

I think fans want to see new stories. Saying that, despite Solo’s weak box office performance, it seems critically it has done fairly well, so those characters could still have a future on Disney+ as a series, which I would be interested in. Maybe it would do better there.

In regards to the plot:

I don’t see why we needed a Han Solo spin-off. I would have preferred it to be a new smuggler played by Alden, who has his own personality that suits the actor. Then the universe would be expanded, and there is a tension of will Alden survive.

How we made the effects on Solo: A Star Wars Story’…

'The film Solo: A Star Wars Story has been Oscar nominated in the best visual effects category.

Visual effects supervisor Julian Foddy of ILM London spoke to Al Moloney about some of the challenges the company faced in helping to make the film.’

^ Quite in interesting video on how they achieved certain elements of the film (with a couple of cool surprises in there) - and that despite the director of the film changing late on… the release date for Solo remained the same.

I mean, that’s pretty much exactly what they did with Jabba.

Did anyone here see the interview with Darth Maul’s voice actor from The Phantom Menace, Peter Serafinowicz. He was contacted to dub over Ray Park for Maul’s cameo before Sam Witwer came in.

I was wondering what had happened there! We just saw Peter in Guardians of the Galaxy a few short years ago, so I was surprised to find out they’d used Witwer.

Was Ray Park actually in makeup/costume or was his performance mo-capped? Something about the hologram effect makes it so I can’t really tell.

Ray Park was in makeup. I don’t see why they would use motion capture.

The making of looks more interesting than the film itself. I will admit I found Solo the least offensive Disney release to a hardcore SW fan, but it was a bland waste of time overall that never found a consistent tone or knew what exactly it wanted to achieve other than being an origin movie.

Disney seemingly thought that they could rush out SW properties in the Marvel method and people would flock to them regardless. And it’s not working. So Episode 9 is really going to be the turning point for the future of SW and how they will go ahead.

But the Darth Maul inclusion is just so stupid. It really is. Now this is all coming back to me. Why in the world did they do that other than someone in the development said hey that’s a cool idea. (Which is what happened, but IIRC it was Kasdan’s son with the idea.)
You know there is Prince Xizor and Black Sun and so much material to mine there…aaand you just picked Darth Maul 'cause everyone always thinks he looked cool.

Ron Howard probably wasn’t deep enough into the material to know if it was a good idea or not. If he shot the Maul footage in the first place.

I’m SO sorry the film was so poorly received. I would have loved to see her return in a second Solo film. The more time passes, the more I realize she’s my favorite part of the film. Such a great original character.

Peter Serafinowicz(sp?) was on a podcast recently where he talked about recording lines for Maul for Solo, and he said Ron Howard talked with him for like an hour about where Maul was at this point in his life, and his motivations and such. It was before they shot Ray Park’s live action portion - Park performed to Serafinowicz’s performance.

Then the powers that be decided to go with Sam Witwer instead for more continuity with the animated Maul, and Serafinowicz wasn’t told until after the premiere that his VO had been cut.

So Howard is who shot the Maul stuff.

I don’t think Xizor has the recognition Maul has with casual fans and the general public though.

You’re right Silver, but they could have used him well and built up his strength with audiences over the course of the film in the way Jabba was in the OT.
At this point a halfhearted animated Shadows of the Empire adaptation would wipe the floor with anything they’ve yet done.
