The scene of Han as a TIE pilot in-training is very interesting to me, and I’m sort of on the fence if it should be included in any future edits.

On one hand, we never really see Han being a great “ship” pilot until his first job, so it is kind of weird how much of a great pilot he thinks he is when we’ve only seen him drive landspeeders.

By including that scene, we get a glimpse of how Han began learning to become an actual pilot.

On the other hand, the jump cut of the officer saying “You’ll be flying in no time!” to him panicking in the trenches is fantastic. And I’m sure they considered cutting in the first place for pacing reasons.

Actually, the deleted scene ends with the same “flying in no time” gag.

I think it (well, the salvageable bits of it) would be a great scene to include of you’re going with the idea mentioned earlier in this thread of cutting from “What’s your name?” to the title card, then pick back up with Han’s tribubal. This lets you cut the “Han…Solo” bit while retaining a version of the “You’ll be flying in no time” gag, and get to see that Han has actually trained as a pilot at some point.

The official digital print is terribly dark. I had to brighten it in premiere just to make it watchable.42583618_264805890812483_1632932938007969792_n.png

That’s exactly what I was thinking on using the deleted scene that way with the title card. That could work very well.

i hated the idea of this Movie and want Harrison to be Han forever, then i saw the Movie and loved it, the one thing that can be cutted out or at least recutted is that weird girl that changes side like underwear but the rest is brilliant…

Honestly, I would love to see an edit that’s the exact same film, but with higher brightness and contrast. I’m sure this has been mentioned. But other than the lighting, I don’t have any real problems with the movie to speak of.

This is the first thing I did when I got the digital file. PM me for a link.

Hi, I’m new here on the forum. Saw the discussion on the look of Solo. I also liked the film, but thought it looked too dark and flat. Just wanted to mention that I’m working on a new colour grade of Solo.

Here’s a video with some comparison shots. It’s very much a work in progress.

Here’s an idea: change Solo: A Star Wars Story into Kessel Run: A Star Wars Story. Now, I know that’s been discussed here before, but my idea is that that title would reflect a change in the film’s overall focus, from being the biography of Han Solo to a heist film featuring Han Solo, like I both wanted and expected. This would require some serious restructuring, though, so I’m not sure how possible it would be. Remove the Corellia scenes, or repurpose them for later in the plot. Q’ira is now just some woman Han meets at Vos’s place. Start with Han at the academy, including that deleted scene. Even then, the film would still be just as boring. I just don’t think this film is salvageable.

So I haven’t seen any final releases of any edits. Any floating around that I should check out? 😃

When Colin Cantwell popped over on the discussion side of the forum, it reminded me of the Solo deleted scene where one of his designs got cut. If the TIE Fighter half of the Naval Academy deleted scene was able to be recreated from scratch, who here thinks it would be worth the effort to do?

Really in that half, you still don’t really see Han being an amazing pilot, unless you count him managing to crash land into a hangar and surviving (which I guess is a very Han thing to do). You could add more to the “dogfight”, but would too much make it too obvious that is isn’t ILM-level CGI?

Basically I had the idea to replace the TIE interior shots with TIE interior footage from 4K77 (Similar to what they did with Red and Gold Leader for Rogue One). Then use the TIE cockpit POV shots, rotoscope the windows out, then use either a Star Destroyer model OR this Cantwell’s Arrestor Cruiser model this guy made if he has it available anywhere to show where Han is flying toward.

And instead of using the TIE/rb (TIE Brute) since I can’t find any models for it, I thought it would be cool to use EC Henry’s TIE Vector concept in its place.

The scene would also need a new voiceover as well for whoever Han is talking to.

It would require a bit of work (especially for myself considering I have never done 3D animation work before), but I think it is possible. I just wanted to see what the consensus was on if this scene is really worth it or not. What are the pros and cons, basically.

I am not sure about the first half of that deleted scene, but the second half could be used. The scene transition to the ground battle works really well with a funny line of “have you flying in no time” works for me.

What a great video! Love that guy’s attitude. Thanks for sharing.

I’ll try to touch on how some of his thoughts might could be applied to edits.

A new idea I hadn’t really heard was trying to swap out Han and Qi’ra introduction with the alternate Qi’ra intro deleted scene. I really like his reasoning. I personally was thinking about cutting all of the Lady Proxima stuff, and just have Han hotwiring the speeder at the very beginning of the film be the start of the speeder chase. But, if I were to keep Proxima I think I would like to try that alternative.

He had an interesting thought regarding Dryden, and how it would’ve been interesting if he didn’t necessarily seem like such a bad guy at the beginning of the film. I can understand that, maybe you could cut out Dryden’s intro with him killing the Imperial Moff, maybe trim some of his threats. But I also think having Dryden be threatening is important to make the stakes of their mission feel high. Hmm, interesting decision.

He also mentioned making Maul’s reveal be a little more subdued, but others have already began attempting this. For me it is either a question of making the cameo a little more subtle or cutting it altogether.

I’ve been trying to cut out the Proxima scene and it is hard. I’m trying to keep the Qi’ra intro scene too, but the problem is the music. Can’t find a way to transition the music from one scene to the next.

I’ve messed around with it too and I just cut all of that out. Because Qi’ra and Han kind of repeat the things they want in the speeder on the way to the spaceport.

So in your version, you have him find Qi’ra in the sewers and then hop on the speeder?

Yeah. I didn’t really consider that you do sort of repeat the exposition in the speeder. But either way I think you miss something without that scene. First of all, I like starting the film with Solo solo. Second, I feel like we need at least a little bit of a beat to get to know these characters before we have to invest in an action scene with them, and getting to see their living quarters and hear them speak about their situation I think would go some ways to help.

Like I said though the problem is with the music, where you get the swelling love theme in the sewers and then the action cue that starts up right as they run to the speeder. If the center channel was clear it’d be easy to smooth it out, but it’s not so I’ll have to find some solution.

I will say though I never considered your idea, and I’d be curious to see how it would play out.

Why do you want to cut the Lady Proxima scene?

Also, there is no music in the alternate version of Qi’ra’s intro, so maybe you could look at trying to use that if you can’t get the current version to work.

Not sure what it really adds, and it mostly slows down the prologue which is too long in general.

Hmm, maybe could work if you could cut out Han talking about “Mother Proxima.” Unfortunately the scene just isn’t as good in many ways, plus there’s still the music at the start of the other scene to worry about.

I liked that scene a lot, but see where you are getting at.

If you ask me the real story starts too late. They have imo two options:

• Cut out the war scenes. Instead, Han escapes the Crime Syndicate at the starport but doesn’t enlist to the Army. How he meets Beckett and Chewie remains a mystery- it is assumed he joins their crew for a job. Simple, right to the point.

• Cut out the entire Corellia sequence, starting the film with an alternate opening reading: THE EMPIRE IS AT WAR, or something. Han starts a solider, and meets Beckett and Chewie. Qira’s relationship is explained through Han’s conversations with the other characters. Simple, right to the point.

I’d be interesting to see an edit, make Solo not Solo in Solo.

Rename Han, remove Chewie, Lando, Falcon, etc
