They could never make Discovery if they were beholden to the aesthetic of the 60s

Why? I love the 60s aesthetic! It’d get me to watch this show, anyway.

I assume the-powers-that-be want the show to appeal to demographics beyond the hardcore Trekkies who like retro kitsch.

Most people would’ve been satisfied if they recreated this:

with some modern “movie” sensibilities. Not as unnecessarily shiny-white as JJ Abrams did, but that’s the idea. You can make it look like the same in universe time period without making it look like low budget '60s TV again. The Cage didn’t even have the excessively colorful lighting the series would have so the original look of the sets translate really well to a more realistic look.

I agree.

I think it’s more of a new ‘this machine kills Breen fascists’ experimental type phaser - with smooth free jazz accompaniment for closing scenes after the villain has been defeated each week… 😃

Am looking forward to the new season of The Orville in a couple of weeks - should be intriguing to see how it approaches that awkward 2nd album season.

“Why Doesn’t Discovery Feel Like Star Trek?”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGi8j_slU_E

An interesting in-depth study of the various aspects regarding why Discovery doesn’t match Prime Universe Trek—from the lighting and the camera work, to the treknobabble, to the tone and the focus on a single main character.

Off topic, but I binge to binge watch the Orville. A lot of people say it’s more Star Trek than Discovery.

I’d recommend spreading it out a bit - it’s appropriately episodic.

I don’t know if this controversial but I’m gonna put it out there:

TOS > DS9 > TNG > TAS > VOY > ENT

I’d put DS9 before TOS — and I haven’t seen VOY or ENT — but otherwise, same for me.

Two Trek shows per year starting 2019:

http://www.treknews.net/2018/12/04/star-trek-picard-series-late-2019/

At the 46th Annual UBS Global Media and Communications Conference, David Nevins, the new chief creative officer at CBS, announced “In 2019, it’s not one ‘Star Trek,’ it’s two ‘Star Treks.’ ‘Discovery’ at the beginning of the year, and Picard will start at the end of the year,” on Tuesday.

Yay?

I was about to make a joke that Picard’s already started 30 years ago, but I lost interest halfway through thinking it.

I hope the Picard series brings us back to a more familiar looking prime universe.

So does anyone here play Star Trek Online?

I made a guy on there last week but I’m not very far into it yet. I started in the TOS part of the timeline but I guess there’s a fair amount of time travel? Some NPC recruited me to be a “temporal agent” after the tutorial.

Time travel gives me a headache. 😛

Axanar is back in production!

Is Axanar still going? We hear that a lot from people just watching our new video updates on YouTube. So to get everyone up to speed, here is a round up! Some of you may know this, and for some it may be all new, but we want to make sure everyone knows what is happening as we move towards shooting in a few months!

As part of the settlement agreement with CBS & Paramount we are allowed to make two more 15 minute episodes, not the full movie we had planned. The question was what to make?

Now when we made Prelude to Axanar , we thought we should make it a part of a series, like The World at War, the famous BBC series narrated by Sir Lawrence Olivier and which a lot of us grew up on (You can read a good article on The World at War here, and its Wikipedia page is here).

The idea was to make Prelude LOOK like it was part of a series. But we had no intention of ever making episodes 4 & 5, let alone 1 & 2. Prelude was meant to be a proof of concept, followed up by the full length movie Axanar.

Fast forward three years and we settle the ridiculous lawsuit by CBS and Paramount. As part of the settlement, we are allowed to make two more 15 minute episodes, or 30 minutes total, and so I took the Axanar feature film script and trimmed it down and reformatted it to tell the story in 30 minutes.

That Prelude short has always felt a bit off to me. It’s like bizarro Trek, something about it just doesn’t seem right, the writing isn’t great, the spirit isn’t there. The scene they released more recently was quite bad, I thought.

Not a fan of Axanar as its own thing, and definitely not a fan of its impact on the fan film as a whole. I’m pretty bitter about how it lead to cutting Continues short most of all.

Death in Winter by Michael Jan Friedman

Having started playing Star Trek Online recently and with the announcement of the new Picard series I suddenly found myself interested in what the novel canon for the Prime Timeline was like post-Nemesis. So I decided to dive in. This book is set just after the events of Nemesis and primarily takes place on a conquered world in Romulan space. I liked how it utilized little tidbits of information that were dropped in the television series and expanded on them to support the novel’s narrative. Especially since I had just heard that information while doing a rewatch of TNG before encountering it in the book. Overall a nice diversion but I think the meat and potatoes of this era will be in the Titan novels that follow Riker into his first command.

The recent In Space! episode of Teen Titans Go! poked a lot of fun at Star Trek, and also Star Wars. Never thought I’d see a spoof of TNG’s beloved The Inner Light! I even caught a very deep cut reference to TAS.

Robert Meyer Burnett has his say, and spills a few beans, on his time on Axanar - and since…

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4YIKjJU7wT9wnunmz3dWAw/videos : https://twitter.com/BurnettRM

3 quite lengthy videos there (29th Dec onwards), have only watched the first one - yet found it quite illuminating - certainly don’t get the feel this was a just another (albeit quality) fan film, and can see why CBS felt they had to step in.

Stepping in is one thing, punishing every other fan film production out there that wasn’t making a buck with rules pulled out of a lawyer’s bum is another. I doubt Roddenberry would ever have done such a thing.
