I haven’t seen it in years. I don’t remember anything other than the music and the basic plot.

Spoils I guess…

When sleeping with her the umpteenth time and trying to have a conversation for once he shouts about how much he’s disgusted by the whole thing and that he isn’t in any way proud of it. He puts his clothes back on and wants to be done with it, but temptation grabs him by the ear when he looks at her pulling her nylons up, so he apologizes and so on.

SONIC RACES THROUGH THE GREEN FIELDS.
THE SUN RACES THROUGH A BLUE SKY FILLED WITH WHITE CLOUDS.
THE WAYS OF HIS HEART ARE MUCH LIKE THE SUN. SONIC RUNS AND RESTS; THE SUN RISES AND SETS.
DON’T GIVE UP ON THE SUN. DON’T MAKE THE SUN LAUGH AT YOU.

How is that different from what I said?

Eighth Grade (2018) - Probably one of the most cringey movies I’ve ever seen, but of course done intentionally and with good purpose. Lots of laughs, but mostly good natured ones that come from a place of understanding and sympathy. Genuine. B+

I saw this too and I’m surprised that you said there were lots of laughs. I thought the movie was very sad and solemn and only a few parts actually struck me as funny. Most of the movie just gave me anxiety, honestly. I still liked it, though. I think I might’ve liked it even a little more than you did depending on how you define a typical “B+” rating, but it sounds like we liked it for totally different reasons. I don’t know. I think that’s interesting.

I actually found it quite sad too, but there were some definite laugh out loud parts (some being sorts of nervous laughter). For much of the runtime I felt really bad for the main character but it eventually morphed into a feeling of optimistic understanding that she’ll end up just fine. So while sad, it wasn’t an interminable sadness.

B+ for me means really good/almost great.

I wish I was more open to watching these coming of age movies. I just hate watching teenagers in movies made in the past 30 or so years.

For what reason?

Can’t relate to them. They annoy me. The most recent teen movie I really liked was Ridgemont High, mostly because it was hilarious more than being able to relate to any one character.

First two Christopher Nolan Batman movies- completely and utterly fantastic.

So maybe you just don’t like movies with teenagers in general.

Probably. But I can’t get enough of the aimless adolescence I see in movies like The Graduate, The Last Picture Show, and so on…

Maybe you’ve just been watching the wrong teenage movies from the past 30 years then.

Yeah, that’s probably how I’d describe it. I guess I interpreted your post as referring to the film as a whole being more of a comedy, which I definitely wouldn’t describe it as.

B+ for me means really good/almost great.

Okay, that’s pretty much what I’d give it if I graded movies.

You described the basic plot, not the subject of that specific scene. The scene isn’t about the affair just happening, that’s throughout the rest of the movie. The scene is about his internal struggle with the situation. He is aware of what he’s doing and he’s disgusted by it, but the sexual temptation is too strong for him to leave it behind. It gets the better of him. I wasn’t saying that it reminded me of that time I had an affair with an older woman, it was a figurative relation to the subject of the scene. Also see my previous response to DE if you didn’t see it.

I know. I was joking. I know it wasn’t a funny joke, but I was just saying “Oh, you had an affair with an older woman?” because it’s funny to say that you relate to the Graduate because it isn’t a plot that most people could relate to. Like if I vaguely said that I related to the Shining (because my dad used to drink too much) but didn’t actually tell you why, and then you said “Oh, you lived in a haunted hotel?” It’s just a lame joke. I wasn’t trying to be difficult.

I have no idea where to ask this since there’s no “New Thread Thread” but would people here enjoy a Criterion Collection thread?

Having only just gotten into criterion, and suddenly having four titles because they’re so great, this might be fun!

Phenomenal. I don’t have many words. The ending made my jaw drop.

Settle in folks, and I’ll tell you about some of the wildest cognitive dissonance I’ve ever had. I’m a student at the University of Arkansas, where David Hunt, the director of this film, graduated from. Naturally, he came to my class as a guest speaker. He’s a very passionate, knowledgable man. Clearly he cares a lot for the medium, and if from such humble beginnings he was able to make his own indie films, surely I could too someday.

Well, then we watched the movie, and it was a steaming pile. I could go on and on about the horrible script, the contrived family drama, the ugly cinematography (most of the movie is in a cave, and very little is visible, resulting in incoherent sequences), the mere fact that the film was based on an early “creepypasta” (eugh), the horrible, ableist way the main characters treat their poor uncle, and so many more problems, but I’m too tired too. This is a very bad movie. And watching it, knowing the director and his story, is one of the most depressing things I’ve ever experienced.

I feel now that I will never make a good film, and every crappy script draft I type out is a waste of time, because if this is the kind of work I put out, I don’t want it.

And I try to seperate the no-budget nature of this (under $100k I think he said), but I’m not sure any budget could have salvaged a project so ill-concieved.
