Solo: A Star Wars Story — Official Review and Opinions Thread — SPOILERS — Page 13

Yeah, in the crime-boss-with-vertical-face-scars guy’s penthouse or office or whatever it was. You know how he had all that stuff (armor, weapons, artifacts, etc) on display? On one table, tucked in amongst other statues and sculptures was the fertility idol from Raiders of the Lost Ark.

That was actually an Easter egg I liked. As well as the skull from the cover Han Solo and the Lost Legacy (also in that guy’s collection).

Seems like many people voted with their dollars this weekend. I’ve read some opinions saying that they won’t be watching any Star Wars in the cinema if Kennedy remains in the cockpit. Would things really get better if… let’s say, Filoni replaced her?

No.

allol love how everyone’s a box office expert now

To be honest, that was not my intention. I just keep running into “SO DISAPPOINTING!” articles all around the web today. So I figured that it must’ve not done enough then?

It’s also the best opening of Ron Howard’s career, so take it all with a grain of

Most box office talk is just click bait fodder. They built SW up now they want to tear it down. The movie will be fine and Star Wars will be fine. Anybody who stayed home because they hated TLJ, thank you! As I went at the last minute on Thursday night, I got a nice seat. 😉

I quite liked the droid rights subplot. It’s a massive injustice in the galaxy that’s been strangely glossed over by our heroes, and to have a droid be an advocate for the cause is totally earned for me. Also, this is no protocol droid, so it probably doesn’t care what people think of it or if it’s grating. I found it refreshing that it wasn’t quiet or tactful.

But the whole thing in the movie was that this character was played for laughs. Like they’re making fun of the ‘social justice warriors’ that people talk about. Either that or they just wanted to see how far the people who think those people are infiltrating the deepest levels of Lucasfilm or whatever would go.

Saw it again tonight. It grows on you for sure.

I also finally pinpointed Moroff. You see him just as the droids and slaves escape the Kessel mines.

And on a more important note, the mix for the score is so incredibly weak. Sometimes you forget it’s even there, but not in a good way. The soundtrack does Powell’s score way more justice.

“That said, there is nothing wrong with mocking prequel lovers and belittling their bad taste.” - Alderaan, 2017

Even Rich Evans kinda LOVES the movie!

You must be kidding me. I’ll watch this when I get a chance but I’d be surprised if any of them really liked it.

I guess RLM covered opinions all over the spectrum. Rich loved it, Mike was on the fence, and Jay did not like it. They all gave really good perspectives on where they were coming from.

I watched all of Clone Wars (not a fan)

(haven’t watched Rebels yet- I don’t trust anyone who says it’s good- that’s how I ended up watching 6 seasons of Clone Wars!)

Here’s where I ask what compelled you to watch six seasons of a show you thoroughly disliked.

Kind of hinted at it earlier- people I trusted promised it got good soon. And when it comes to Star Wars, I’ve always been a glutton for punishment. I saw all three prequels multiple times- just to give them a fair shake, even though I hated each one as they were released. Clone Wars was not much different. I suppose I’ll watch Rebels one day for the same reasons.

IT'S MY TRILOGY, AND I WANT IT NOW!

"Yeah, well, George says a lot of things..." a young 1997 xhonzi on RASSM

The longest I’m willing to stick with a show that doesn’t engage me is two seasons. If it hasn’t improved for me by that point, I consider it a lost cause.

No because Ahsoka and f-ing Ezra would take over the whole Saga.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

Maybe since the idea of organic/droid relationships was floated in the old Marvel comics more than once, it’s not bothering me at all. And Lucasfilm always had veto power over the comic storylines, (screams in the void posted about that in the SW Marvel thread recently) so one can infer they were okay with it back then.

thanks for the shout out Silverwook ! and the issue of droid rights goes all the way back to that first issue of that old Marvel comic that took place outside the original movie , the story arc of Valance the Hunter and Simon Greyshade and MasterCom on The Wheel deals with it as well .

also, I saw Solo over the weekend and it was a hell of a lot of fun with dozens of references going all the way back to 1978 and before , but done in a way that added flavor to the story and rewarded longtime fans without calling too much attention to themselves or pandering .In my opinion ,it is the best of the new batch of films.

I forgot about the cyborg the locals don’t want buried in the cemetery. Wasn’t sure Valance fell under the droid rights discussion since he liked to blast droids for fun. He’d be a great character to show up in the films though.

If you’ve ever seen the fan made comic Jaxxon’s 11, Greyshade and MasterCom seem to be more than friends. 😉

Being a show runner (and a good one) and being a producer ain’t quite the same job. Kennedy should stick at making things happening, instead of interfering with artistic decisions.

(in fact we need Lucas: not at the scripts, not directing, but showing the path, what he did with TCW…)

Current US box office: $103,016,812

Current worldwide: $172,697,257

(Apologies if there is a box office discussion elsewhere…)

There is a decent thread here on that subject mate - ‘Star Wars at box office’ which may be of interest?

Discussions of Filoni, Kennedy, Disney, Lucas, the management - and any perceived shortcomings of them etc - are probably best suited to a more relevant thread than this, the ‘Solo review and opinion’ thread - which is more suited to discussing the film itself.

A little patience goes a long way on this old-school Rebel base. If you are having issues finding what you are looking for, these will be of some help…

While this review is for TLJ it sort of sums up how I feel about the current state of the franchise, and the addition of Solo to the list of feature films:

https://www.google.nl/amp/s/www.popmatters.com/star-wars-the-last-jedi-death-spirit-review-2517583409.amp.html

This quote sums it up pretty well:

“These films of oppression and resistance, good and evil are restrictive in their scope, their multi episode continuation an echo chamber that would best left to the silence of imagination over big screen realisation. Star Wars has become a broken record, with a faulty premise of philosophical balance, that can only be handled appropriately by breaking its defined structure.”

While Solo is not a bad film in my view, and I liked both TFA and RO, I’m sick to death of the current franchise’s self-referential nature, and its tendency to revisit past hits. The announcement of a Boba Fett film on the day of Solo’s release only reinforces this view, and I dislike it intensely. Star Wars used to spark the imagination. These new films stiffle the imagination by either giving us distorted versions of what came before (ST), or by filling in the blanks with backstory and fan service (RO and Solo). So, while I found some enjoyment watching Solo, I can’t help but feel empty after yet another entry in the continuing Star Wars franchise, which sadly grows much faster in volume than in original content.

No, I don’t think Dave Filoni is the right man for the job. Kevin Feige on the other hand…
